Exposure to climate change drives stability or collapse of desert mammal and bird communities.

High exposure to warming from climate change is expected to threaten biodiversity by pushing many species toward extinction. Such exposure is often assessed for all taxa at a location from climate projections, yet species have diverse strategies for buffering against temperature extremes. We compared changes in species occupancy and site-level richness of small mammal and bird communities in protected areas of the Mojave Desert using surveys spanning a century. Small mammal communities remained remarkably stable, whereas birds declined markedly in response to warming and drying. Simulations of

Protocol for the reconstruction of micromammals from fossils. Two case studies: The skulls of Beremendia fissidens and Dolinasorex glyphodon.

We have developed a protocol for reconstructing 3D models of the skulls of extinct species of small mammals. For the first time, the reconstruction uses fragments of fossils from a mixture of different specimens and from related extant species. We use free software and commercial computers to make the process reproducible and usable for the scientific community. We present a semi-quantitative protocol to face the problem of making 3D reconstructions of fossil species that are incomplete in the fossil record and/or represented by a mixture of different individuals, as usually occurs with small

Of mice and men: lyme disease and biodiversity.

The current rapid rate of species extinction and loss of biodiversity occurring throughout the world has the potential to exact far-reaching adverse impacts on human health in many ways, including increasing the risk of infectious disease transmission. Here, we use Lyme disease as a model to illustrate how loss of biodiversity in the community of vertebrates may lead to increased transmission of zoonotic pathogens in humans. We also illustrate how preserving biodiversity has the potential to reduce the prevalence of human infectious disease more generally.

Range-wide Yangtze freshwater dolphin expedition: The last chance to see Baiji?

BACKGROUND, AIM AND SCOPE: There are two species of fresh water cetaceans surviving in the Yangtze River system in China: Baiji (Lipotes vexillifer) and Yangtze finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides asiaeorientalis). As a result of the expansion of human activities on the river, their distribution ranges appear to be decreasing and in the case of the Baiji, are even being restricted to several sections. The Baiji is the world's most critically endangered cetacean species with a population estimated at only a few tens of individuals. The Yangtze finless porpoise is the world's only freshwa

Ultraviolet radiation and Vitamin D3 in amphibian health, behaviour, diet and conservation.

Amphibians are currently suffering a period of mass extinction with approximately 20% of species under severe threat and more than 120 species already extinct. In light of this crisis there is an urgency to establish viable ex situ populations and also find the causes of in situ declines. The role of ultraviolet radiation and Vitamin D(3) in amphibian health directly influences both ex situ and in situ populations. Vitamin D(3) can be photosynthesised endogenously via UV-B radiation (UV-B), or acquired through the diet, and then metabolised to calcitriol the biologically active hormonal form.

Deleterious variants in genes regulating mammalian reproduction in Neanderthals, Denisovans and extant humans.

STUDY QUESTION: Were Neanderthals and Denisovans (referred here also as extinct hominidae) carrying deleterious variants in genes regulating reproduction? SUMMARY ANSWER: The majority of extinct hominidae analyzed here, presented a considerable number of deleterious variants per individual in proteins regulating different aspects of reproduction, including gonad and uterine function, and gametogenesis. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Neanderthals, Denisovans and extant humans were interfertile and hybridized while occupying geographically overlapping areas in Europe and Asia. This is evidenced by the

PMAT enhances sexual dimorphism of fear behaviors and facilitates female mice's generalized contextual fear extinction.

Enhanced signaling of dopamine and/or serotonin during highly arousing situations can be reduced in part by monoamine transporters, such as plasma membrane monoamine transporter (PMAT, Slc29a4). An absence of selective pharmacological inhibitors means genetically modified mice constitutively deficient in PMAT remain the best tool for studying PMAT's organism-level functional effects. Fear conditioning is a high arousal process. Generalization of fear is evolutionarily advantageous, whereby information learned from one experience is applied to other new but similar encounters. Pathological fear

Sex differences in fear expression and persistence in an animal model of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a complex psychiatric condition arising from traumatic experiences, marked by abnormal fear memories. Despite women are twice as likely as men to develop PTSD, the biological mechanisms underlying this disparity remain inadequately explored, particularly in preclinical studies involving female subjects. Previous research shows that female rats exhibit active fear responses, while males display passive behaviors. Additionally, sex differences in ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) during fear conditioning have been observed, indicating varying emotional resp

Repeated cocaine exposure prior to fear conditioning induces persistency of PTSD-like symptoms and enhancement of hippocampal and amygdala cell density in male rats.

Pre- and post-trauma drug use can interfere with recovery from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the biological underpinnings of this interference are poorly understood. Here we examined the effect of pre-fear conditioning cocaine self-administration on PTSD-like symptoms in male rats, and defined impairment of fear extinction as difficulty to recover from PTSD. We also examined cell density changes in brain regions suspected of being involved in resistance to PTSD recovery. Before footshock stress testing, rats were trained to self-administer cocaine during 20 consecutive days,

Prenatal Stress Differentially Shapes Adult Behavior in Male and Female Offspring.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal stress (PNS) is a well-established risk factor for neuropsychiatric vulnerability, yet its sex-specific behavioral consequences remain incompletely defined. Because males and females follow distinct neurodevelopmental trajectories, clarifying how early-life stress differentially shapes behavior is essential for developing targeted interventions. However, few preclinical studies directly compare male and female offspring within the same experimental framework, limiting the ability to identify true sex-dependent effects. METHODS: Using a validated mouse model of gestational

Development, extinction and reinstatement of morphine withdrawal-induced conditioned place aversion in rats.

The motivational component of drug withdrawal may contribute to drug seeking and relapse through the negative reinforcement-based process. Here, we used conditioned place aversion (CPA) induced by naloxone-precipitated morphine withdrawal to measure the aversive effects. Using an unbiased conditioning paradigm, we treated rats with morphine hydrochloride [(10 mg/kg intraperitoneally (i.p.)] twice per day (at 08:00 and 20:00) for 6.5 days (from day 1 to day 7 morning), while gave them naloxone (0.3 mg/kg i.p.) on day 6, a precipitated withdrawal paired with a compartment that caused CPA to the

Hg-accumulation in above-ground fern biomass and spore malformations around industrial sites (Czechia): Implications for mass extinction scenarios.

We investigated mercury uptake by the polypod fern Dryopteris filix-mas from two mercury emission sites in the Czech Republic along transects of high to low soil Hg concentrations, with the aim to determine whether ferns can accumulate Hg in above-ground biomass where it could disrupt meiotic processes. We focus on Hg because it has been hypothesized to have caused widespread malformation of spores in ferns proliferating in conjunction with one of the Big Five mass extinction events at the end of the Triassic (201.5 Ma). Here, we show that Hg-concentrations in the roots of Dryopteris filix-mas

The possible effects of anthropogenic acoustic pollution on marine mammals' reproduction: an emerging threat to animal extinction.

For about 119 species of cetaceans and other aquatic animals, sound is the key source of learning about the environment, navigation, communication, foraging, and avoiding predators. However, in the recent era, the introduction of large quantities of anthropogenic noise into the ocean has significantly altered the ocean's acoustic environment. The anthropogenic noises travel very long distances, blanketing enormous areas. This can affect cetaceans, either by direct killing or compromising hearing, navigation, communication, predation, as well as normal behaviors. It has been suggested that acou

The extinction of dengue through natural vulnerability of its vectors.

BACKGROUND: Dengue is the world's most important mosquito-borne viral illness. Successful future management of this disease requires an understanding of the population dynamics of the vector, especially in the context of changing climates. Our capacity to predict future dynamics is reflected in our ability to explain the significant historical changes in the distribution and abundance of the disease and its vector. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here we combine daily weather records with simulation modelling techniques to explain vector (Aedes aegypti (L.)) persistence within its current and

Lasting effects of oral contraceptives on fear responses to a safe context.

Estradiol (E2), whether endogenous or administered via oral contraceptives (OCs), modulates fear regulation. However, its role in contextual fear signaling, critical for distinguishing threat from safety, remains poorly understood in humans. While prior human studies focused on cue-related extinction recall, animal research suggests that a single high-dose of exogenous E2 generalizes fear to safe contexts. This study tested whether hormonal status and OC use influence contextual fear responses in humans, and whether OC-related effects are long-lasting and dose-dependent. In a two-day fear cond

Sexual selection purges mutation load, but not overall genetic diversity, decreasing vulnerability to extinction.

Theory suggests sexual selection will enhance population viability by purging deleterious alleles. However, direct genomic evidence for this fundamental idea is scarce and contradictory. We combined long-term experimental evolution with whole-genome resequencing to directly test how sexual selection affects mutation load, genomic divergence, and extinction risk in small populations (maximum Ne = 40) of Tribolium castaneum. After 156 generations, populations evolving under strong sexual selection carried substantially fewer deleterious alleles than populations under weak sexual selection, based

Pheomelanin pigment remnants mapped in fossils of an extinct mammal.

Recent progress has been made in paleontology with respect to resolving pigmentation in fossil material. Morphological identification of fossilized melanosomes has been one approach, while a second methodology using chemical imaging and spectroscopy has also provided critical information particularly concerning eumelanin (black pigment) residue. In this work we develop the chemical imaging methodology to show that organosulfur-Zn complexes are indicators of pheomelanin (red pigment) in extant and fossil soft tissue and that the mapping of these residual biochemical compounds can be used to res

PCR slippage across the ML-2 microsatellite of the Cryptosporidium MIC1 locus enables development of a PCR assay capable of distinguishing the zoonotic Cryptosporidium parvum from other human infectious Cryptosporidium species.

Cryptosporidium are ubiquitous and significant enteropathogens of all classes of vertebrates and a major cause of human morbidity and mortality worldwide. Of the 24 recognized species, the zoonotic Cryptosporidium parvum and the host-specific Cryptosporidium hominis cause the majority of cases of human cryptosporidiosis. Here, we report on structural and transcriptional variability between C. parvum and C. hominis at the MIC1 locus, which encodes a microneme localized thrombospondin-like domain containing protein previously demonstrated to be critical for host cell infection by C. parvum.
