Organ Culture corneal storage offers an extended storage time and increased donor pool and tissue assessment opportunities. In September 2011, the Lions New South Wales Eye Bank (LNSWEB) moved from hypothermic storage to Organ Culture corneal storage. This study evaluates the impact of implementation of Organ Culture on donor eye retrieval and the corneal transplant waiting list over a 3 year period in NSW, Australia. Retrospective review of the LNSWEB data from September 2011 to August 2014. Tissue collection, waiting list and tissue utilization data were recorded. The data from September 200

Since the establishment of the first eye bank in the 1940s, their role has evolved to face new challenges. With the recent development of lamellar keratoplasties, eye banks play an even bigger role in the selection and preparation of donor tissues. The increasing number of keratoplasty techniques and the high demand for "ready-to-use" tissues are challenging eye banks to improve and develop new preparation techniques. Besides necessary examinations, new approaches of tissue analysis in eye banks allow a better/optimized selection of corneal tissues. These new challenges in tissue preservation,

Corneal transplantation is an exceedingly common and pivotal procedure in the management of corneal disease. The increasing demand for corneal transplantation underscores the importance of current guidelines and methodologies for donor tissue screening and collection. A recent FDA notice of inspectional focus on United States eye banks brought concerns about donor sepsis being a source for recipient infections and improper eye bank screening practices. However, there is evidence to suggest that septic donors do not increase the risk of transmission of infections associated with corneal grafts.

Over the past ten years, corneal transplantation surgical techniques have undergone revolutionary changes. Since its inception, traditional full thickness corneal transplantation has been the treatment to restore sight in those limited by corneal disease. Some disadvantages to this approach include a high degree of post-operative astigmatism, lack of predictable refractive outcome, and disturbance to the ocular surface. The development of Descemet's stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK), transplanting only the posterior corneal stroma, Descemet's membrane, and endothelium, has dramatically

PURPOSE: Testing for the p24 antigen of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may detect early HIV infection in the seronegative window; however, falsely reactive results may occur in cadaver specimens. Although neither the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) nor the Eye Bank Association of America requires p24 testing of cornea donors, many tissue banks using other organs from cornea donors do perform this assay, and the FDA requires that eye banks reject corneal tissue if a reactive p24 assay is reported. We investigated the impact of p24 testing on eye banking and corneal transplantation.

This report contains selected excerpts, presented as a summary, from a public workshop sponsored by the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) held to discuss West Nile Virus (WNV) and scientific considerations for tissue donors. The daylong workshop was held 9 July 2010 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel at Tyson's Corner in McLean, Virginia, United States (U.S.). The workshop was designed to determine and discuss scientific information that is known, and what is not known, regarding WNV infection and transmission. The goal is to determine how to fill gaps in knowledge of WNV and tissue donation

Sixteen corneal buttons were obtained from 16 patients with keratoconus at the time of penetrating keratoplasty (mean age, 34 +/- 3.2 yr) and prepared for phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy following perchloric acid extraction. The corneas were compared with age-matched corneas from fresh eye-bank eyes with normal slit-lamp biomicroscopic appearance. Higher levels (P less than 0.05) of nucleoside monophosphates and choline phosphate and lower levels (P less than 0.05) of adenosine diphosphate were detected in keratoconus than in eye-bank corneas. The level of an unidentified

The growth of eye banking in India was showing positive trends until the nation was hit by unprecedented times as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The impact of this has led to a downward spiraling in eye banking activities globally. Several measures had to be implemented to tide over the crisis and strategies planned for future to prepare for the needs of corneal transplantation. While eye banks in India have been practicing short- term and intermediate storage preservation media, there is a definite need to evolve other methods of very long-term preservation. This review discusses various

To gather information from stakeholders involved in corneal donation and transplantation to inform discussion at the "National Consensus Forum on Improving Cornea Donation and Transplantation Access in Canada" held in February 2020, survey questions were posed to eye banks, transplanting ophthalmologists and organ donation organizations across Canada to learn more about demand, wait times, and access to tissue for transplant. The survey response rate was one hundred percent (100%) for eye banks and organ donation organizations while 64 percent (64%) of transplant ophthalmologists provided feed

There is relatively little known about the supply for allograft tissues in Canada. The major aim of this study is to quantify the current or "Known Supply" of human allograft tissue (bone, tendons, soft tissue, cardiovascular, ocular and skin) from known tissue banks in Canada, to estimate the "Unknown Supply" of human allograft tissue available to Canadian users from other sources, and to investigate the nature and source of these tissue products. Two surveys were developed; one for tissue banks processing one or more tissue types and the other specific to eye banks. Thirty nine sites were in

In India, the most densely populated state is Uttar Pradesh in the Northern region. This state has a huge base of corneal blind population due to cornea infections, ocular trauma, and (chemical) burns.Successful cornea transplantation using human post-mortem donated cornea is a treatment modality. In India lack of availability of donated cornea is a public health challenge. Thus, there is great need to reduce the huge demand and supply gap by increasing the donations for supply of cornea to patients. The Eye Bank at the Dr. Shroff's Charity Eye Hospital (SCEH) and the German Society for Tissue

PURPOSE: To determine how early body refrigeration affects corneal donor transplant suitability and endothelial cell density.
METHODS: Donor information was obtained from the CorneaGen Eye Bank including demographics, time of death to preservation, and body refrigeration status, for donors between 2012 and 2016. The death to preservation interval was classified into 3 categories: 0 to 10, 10 to 20, and 20+ hours. Two primary logistic method models were fit using a main effects model and an interaction model to determine the association of body refrigeration on unsuitability of transplantation

The eyes of a 25-year-old male were collected by the Utah Lions Eye Bank after his suicide by hanging. Following dissection of the corneoscleral buttons from intact globes, bilateral detached Descemet's membranes with subsequent scrolling in the periphery were observed. We believe these findings were caused by a large increase in intraocular pressure secondary to the hanging. Lens and anterior capsule fractures after hanging have been reported, but corneal damage has never been discussed. We invite transplant surgeons and eye bank recovery specialists to share their experience of similar corne

Twenty-four pair of eyes donated to the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank were studied to determine the effect of corneal procurement methods on tissue quality. Eyes studied were ineligible for transplantation because of a preexisting medical condition other than sepsis or age of > 75 years. The procurement technique was randomized for each donor. One cornea was procured in situ (IS), whereas the fellow eye was enucleated and processed in the laboratory (EN). Procurement protocols were standard Eye Bank Association of America methods. Tissue characteristics were scored according to standard eye bank pr
