Supranuclear disorders of eye movement.

Eye movements are the result of activity in discrete systems. Saccades and smooth pursuit movements respond to target position and target velocity respectively. Compensatory responses to movements that alter the position of the eyes in space depend upon the vestibular and optokinetic systems. Vergence movements allow fusion and binocular vision. Eye movement abnormalities of supranuclear origin may be divided into nystagmus, other ocular oscillations, saccadic dysfunction, smooth pursuit dysfunction, gaze palsy, tonic deviation, and vergence disability. An algorithm for the analysis of supranu

Eye movement in strabismic cats.

Strabismus is a common clinical condition in which the visual axes of the eyes do not intersect on the object being viewed. As such, the ability to achieve single binocular vision by fusing the images of a single object in the two eyes is lost. In most cases of strabismus, one of the two eyes is clearly deviated and the other eye is used for fixation, although in some cases each eye is used alternately for fixation. While much attention has been devoted to the motor capabilities of the deviating eye in strabismus, little attention has been given to the visuomotor competence of the other eye. W

Ahhh, that's a strange eye movement.

A 57-year-old woman presents with sudden onset of horizontal diplopia following surgical repair of a ruptured posterior fossa aneurysm. Neuro-ophthalmic examination revealed a left gaze palsy, right abducens palsy, bilateral facial nerve palsy, reverse ocular bobbing and oculopalatal myoclonus. These findings can be localized to the anterior pons caused by damage to the midline perforator vessels resulting in anterior pontine pathology. A video demonstration of the oculopalatal myoclonus and other types of vertical nystagmus is provided. The etiology and characteristics of these forms of nysta

Orchestration of saccadic eye-movements by brain rhythms in macaque Frontal Eye Field.

Visual perception has been suggested to operate on temporal 'chunks' of sensory input, rather than on a continuous stream of visual information. Saccadic eye movements impose a natural rhythm on the sensory input, as periods of steady fixation between these rapid eye movements provide distinct temporal segments of information. Ideally, the timing of saccades should be precisely locked to the brain's rhythms of information processing. Here, we investigated such locking of saccades to rhythmic neural activity in rhesus monkeys performing a visual foraging task. We found that saccades are phase-l

Effect of Viewing Conditions on Fixation Eye Movements and Eye Alignment in Amblyopia.

PURPOSE: Patients with amblyopia are known to have fixation instability, which arises from alteration of physiologic fixation eye movements (FEMs) and nystagmus. We assessed the effects of monocular, binocular, and dichoptic viewing on FEMs and eye alignment in patients with and without fusion maldevelopment nystagmus (FMN). METHODS: Thirty-four patients with amblyopia and seven healthy controls were recruited for this study. Eye movements were recorded using infrared video-oculography during (1) fellow eye viewing (FEV), (2) amblyopic eye viewing (AEV), (3) both eye viewing (BEV), and (4) di

'Puppy Dog Eyes' Are Associated With Eye Movements, Not Communication.

The inner brow raiser is a muscle movement that increases the size of the orbital cavity, leading to the appearance of so-called 'puppy dog eyes'. In domestic dogs, this expression was suggested to be enhanced by artificial selection and to play an important role in the dog-human relationship. Production of the inner brow raiser has been shown to be sensitive to the attentive stance of a human, suggesting a possible communicative function. However, it has not yet been examined whether it is sensitive to human presence. In the current study, we aimed to test whether the inner brow raiser differ

Loss of rapid eye movement atonia in rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder and narcolepsy.

A reduction of physiological muscle atonia during rapid eye movement sleep is characteristic in patients with rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder, however, it can also be found in narcolepsy patients. We evaluated rapid eye movement sleep associated electromyographic activity to set cut-off values of rapid eye movement sleep without atonia, differentiating rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder and narcolepsy patients from controls to enable more precise future diagnostic criteria for these disorders. We retrospectively analysed polysomnography recordings of 16 rapid eye movement

Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder and Other Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Parasomnias.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The most common rapid eye movement (REM) parasomnia encountered by neurologists is REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), and nightmares are so frequent that every neurologist should be able to differentiate them from the dream enactment of RBD. Isolated sleep paralysis is relatively common and is often mistaken for other neurologic disorders. This article summarizes the current state of the art in the diagnosis of RBD, discusses the role of specific questionnaires and polysomnography in the diagnosis of RBD, and reviews recent studies on idiopathic RBD as an early feature of a

What eye-movements tell us about Disorders of Consciousness?

In everyday life, eye movements (including fixation, smooth pursuit and saccades) are essential for interacting with the visual environment. In patients with Disorders of Consciousness (DoC), visual fixation and pursuit are considered among the earliest clinical signs of awareness recovery. However, the traditional distinction between reflexive and voluntary eye movements may be insufficient to interpret these behaviours, as movements that appear automatic can still recruit cortical networks. This review re-examines eye movements in DoC through a neuroanatomical and translational lens. We char

Fixational eye movements: Implications for applied and clinical assessments.

Clinicians can use fixational eye movements to gain more information about the state of their patients: these measures have great potential as biomarkers of health conditions and might facilitate the early and differential diagnosis of disease. Objective measurements of fixational eye movements are also increasingly used to quantify fatigue and other traits or symptoms. However, the validity of such assessments depends on our ability to identify and control for factors that potentially alter fixational eye movements and that thereby may confound the results. Because eye movements can drive neu

Retrieval-related eye movements are predictive of memory precision.

Eye movements are predictive of successful episodic memory encoding and retrieval, but it is unclear whether they reflect the precision of retrieved memory content. Here, we examined relationships between eye fixations, memory precision and fMRI BOLD activity. At study, participants were presented with object images, each placed at a random location on an invisible circle. At test, both studied and new images were presented. Participants were instructed to make a covert recognition memory judgment to each image, recall and then signal its studied location, guessing if necessary. Simultaneous f

Neural networks associated with eye movements in congenital blindness.

Recent studies have shown that during the typical resting-state, echo planar imaging (EPI) time series obtained from the eye orbit area correlate with brain regions associated with oculomotor control and lower-level visual cortex. Here, we asked whether congenitally blind (CB) shows similar patterns, suggesting a hard-wired constraint on connectivity. We find that orbital EPI signals in CB do correlate with activity in the motor cortex, but less so with activity in the visual cortex. However, the temporal patterns of this eye movement-related signal differed strongly between CB and sighted con

Effects of Cervical Spinal Manipulation on Saccadic Eye Movements.

Quantifying saccadic eye movements can assist in identifying dysfunctional brain networks in both healthy and diseased people. Infrared Oculography is a simple and non-invasive approach to capturing and quantifying saccades, providing information that might aid in diagnosis and outcome assessments. The effect of spinal manipulation on quantified saccadic performance parameters has not been fully studied despite known post-manipulative effects on the brain and brainstem regions controlling them. This case study investigates spinal manipulation's immediate and long-term effects on saccadic eye m

Complex network of eye movements during rapid automatized naming.

INTRODUCTION: Although the method of visualizing eye-tracking data as a time-series might enhance performance in the understanding of gaze behavior, it has not yet been thoroughly examined in the context of rapid automated naming (RAN). METHODS: This study attempted, for the first time, to measure gaze behavior during RAN from the perspective of network-domain, which constructed a complex network [referred to as gaze-time-series-based complex network (GCN)] from gaze time-series. Hence, without designating regions of interest, the features of gaze behavior during RAN were extracted by computi

Eye Movements in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: Clinical Challenges.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), also known as concussion, is a common injury which affects patients of all demographics. There is a global effort to accurately diagnose and identify patients at highest risk of prolonged symptom burden to facilitate appropriate rehabilitation efforts. Underreporting is common with large numbers not engaging with services, in addition to differences in treatment outcomes according to ethnicity, age, and gender. As patients recover, symptomology evolves which challenges rehabilitative efforts with no clear definition of 'recovered'. This review describes key

Eye Movements in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: Ocular Biomarkers.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI, or concussion), results from direct and indirect trauma to the head (i.e. a closed injury of transmitted forces), with or without loss of consciousness. The current method of diagnosis is largely based on symptom assessment and clinical history. There is an urgent need to identify an objective biomarker which can not only detect injury, but inform prognosis and recovery. Ocular motor impairment is argued to be ubiquitous across mTBI subtypes and may serve as a valuable clinical biomarker with the recent advent of more affordable and portable eye tracking tech

Preserved eye movements in adults with spinal muscular atrophy.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) most prominently affects proximal limb and bulbar muscles. Despite older case descriptions, ocular motor neuron palsies or other oculomotor abnormalities are not considered part of the phenotype. METHODS: We investigated oculomotor function by testing saccadic eye movements of 15 patients with SMA. Their performance was compared with that of age-matched healthy controls. Horizontal rightward and leftward saccades were recorded by means of video-oculography, whereas subjects looked at light-emitting diode targets placed at ±5°, ±10°, and ±15° eccentr

Re-evaluating whether bilateral eye movements influence memory retrieval.

Several recent studies have reported enhanced memory when retrieval is preceded by repetitive horizontal eye movements, relative to vertical or no eye movements. The reported memory boost has been referred to as the Saccade-Induced Retrieval Enhancement (SIRE) effect. Across two experiments, memory performance was compared following repetitive horizontal or vertical eye movements, as well as following a control condition of no eye movements. In Experiment 1, we conceptually replicated Christman and colleagues' seminal study, finding a statistically significant SIRE effect, albeit with weak Bay
