Assessment of 28-day oral exposure to Pueraria candollei var. mirifica (Fabaceae) roots on pituitary-ovarian axis function and selected metabolic parameters in ovary-intact rats.

Pueraria candollei var. mirifica (Fabaceae) root (PMR) has recently been developed as a potential selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) in menopausal women. Nowadays, many premenopausal women also take dietary PMR supplements, however, the exact biological effects of PMR have not been evaluated. This study included the application of the OECD guideline 407 for the assessment of 28-day oral exposure to PMR on pituitary-ovarian (PO) axis function and metabolic parameters in the premenopausal rat model. Ovary-intact adult rats were orally administrated with 10, 100, 750, 1000, and 1500 mg/

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) primarily exhibit deficits in communication and social interaction, along with repetitive behaviors and restricted interests. This disorder is often associated with anxiety, nociceptive disorders, and pain. While medical treatment generally focuses on treating the symptoms rather than addressing the underlying causes, traditional medicine is sometimes used as an alternative. Piptadeniastrum africanum is used in Cameroonian medicinal folks to treat cognitive disorders. However, its effects and mechanisms of action regarding the inhib

Entomophthora leyteensis Villacarlos & Keller sp. nov. (Entomophthorales: Zygomycetes) infecting Tetraleurodes acaciae (Quaintance) (Insecta, Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), a recently introduced whitefly on Gliricidia sepium (Jaq.) Walp. (Fabaceae) in the Philippines.

Entomophthora leyteensis Villacarlos & Keller sp. nov., a species of Entomophthorales infecting the whitefly Tetraleurodes acaciae on Gliricidia sepium in the Philippines is described. Disease prevalence monitored weekly for 8 weeks indicated that the fungus could cause 8-31% infection within the whitefly population. Epizootics due to this fungus occurred in Inopacan, Leyte. Sampling live whitefly adults and dissecting them on glass slides for microscopic examination of fungal structures was found to give a better measure of prevalence than actual counts of infected insect cadavers. In silico molecular docking and predictive ADME properties, in vitro antioxidant scavenging capacities, and in vivo pharmacological activities to study the potential of Pterocarpus mildbraedii's Harms (Fabaceae) in preventing vaginal dysbiosis and risk factors for cardiovascular disease in an estropause rat model.

Vaginal dysbiosis (VaD) is a common issue among menopausal women, who are particularly susceptible to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Pterocarpus sp. are known to induce estrogen-like activities, which are the key pathways for menopause-related disorders. This study aims to evaluate the potential of Pterocarpus mildbraedii water extract on VaD and CVD risk factors using an estropause (EP) rat model. Furthermore, predictive ADME properties and molecular docking with target proteins were assessed to develop alternative medicinal treatments for menopause. The secondary metabolites in P. mildbraedii

Discovery of an isoflavone biosynthetic pathway in Iridaceae plants.

Isoflavones, characterized by their distinctive C6-C3-C6 skeleton, represent an important class of plant secondary metabolites with considerable pharmacological and physiological relevance. Although their biosynthetic pathways have been extensively elucidated in Fabaceae species, the molecular mechanisms governing isoflavone production in other plant families remain largely unexplored. Herein, we uncovered an isoflavone biosynthetic pathway in Iridaceae plants. Notably, it involves an uncharacterized CYP736D family isoflavone synthase, a non-CYP450 (iso)flavone 6-hydroxylase, two cation-depend

Divergent Phosphorus-Mining Strategies in Simple and Compound Cluster Roots in Extremely Phosphorus-Impoverished Soils in Southwest Australia.

Most Proteaceae and some Fabaceae species produce specialised cluster roots (CRs), and are abundant in severely phosphorus (P)-impoverished soils in southwest Australia. Two types of CRs, compound and simple, have been identified. However, the difference in their P-mining strategies remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted glasshouse and field experiments to compare the P-acquisition strategies among 18 CR-producing species in Proteaceae and Fabaceae. Proteaceae produced a significantly larger mass of CRs than Fabaceae. Particularly, Banksia species produced the largest mass of compound CRs an

Nitrogen addition level is more influential to aboveground productivity than nitrogen addition frequency in an alpine grassland.

AIMS: The combined effects of climate change and human activities have greatly increased atmospheric nitrogen deposition globally, with profound impacts on plant growth and grassland productivity. This study investigates the mechanisms governing how plant aboveground productivity responds to nitrogen addition with varied addition levels and frequencies in Bayanbulak alpine grassland. METHODS: A field experiment was conducted with five N addition levels (0, 5, 10, 15, 20 g·m-2) and two frequencies (low and high). Soil properties, plant aboveground biomass and nutrient content were analyzed usi

Advances in natural coumaronochromones: a comprehensive review of natural occurrence, bioactivities, and chemical synthesis.

Coumaronochromones, characterized by a distinctive benzofuro[2,3-b]chromenone core, constitute a rare subclass of isoflavonoids. Biosynthetically, they are proposed to originate from carbohydrate metabolism and the phenylpropanoid pathway like other isoflavones. To date, 92 natural coumaronochromones have been isolated and characterized from nearly 28 species across 24 genera within 7 families (including one fungal source). These compounds are predominantly distributed in the Fabaceae family, which accounts for over half (64%) of all known derivatives. Notably, approximately 20% of coumaronoch

Chromosome-scale genome assembly of Flemingia macrophylla.

Flemingia macrophylla, a perennial shrub of the family Fabaceae, possesses pharmacological properties such as anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities. However, its whole genome has remained largely unexplored. In this study, we generated a chromosome-level genome assembly of F. macrophylla by integrating high-fidelity (HiFi) long-read sequencing generated by Pacific Biosciences (PacBio) and high-throughput chromosome conformation capture (Hi-C) scaffolding. The assembled genome spans 1.13 Gb, with 93.29% of sequences anchored to 11 pseudochromosomes (scaffold N50 = 105.36 Mb), closely m

Anthelmintic screening of Zimbabwean plants traditionally used against schistosomiasis.

Extracts of 23 plant species used popularly against schistosomiasis in Zimbabwe were screened for their anthelmintic effect. Schistosomules of the trematode Schistosoma mansoni and cysticercoids of the cestode Hymenolepis diminuta were studied in vitro. The material consisted of 58 plant extracts, of which 37 killed the newly excysted cysticercoids within an hour, when incubated in a culture medium. Lethal concentrations varied from 0.8 to 103 mg/ml. All plant extracts showed activity against the tapeworms after 24 h. Ten of the best extracts were also tested against schistosomules. Five of th

DNA barcode for the identification of the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis plant feeding preferences in a tropical urban environment.

Little is known about the feeding behavior of hematophagous insects that require plant sugar to complete their life cycles. We studied plant feeding of Lutzomyia longipalpis sand flies, known vectors of Leishmania infantum/chagasi parasites, in a Brazilian city endemic with visceral leishmaniasis. The DNA barcode technique was applied to identify plant food source of wild-caught L. longipalpis using specific primers for a locus from the chloroplast genome, ribulose diphosphate carboxylase. DNA from all trees or shrubs within a 100-meter radius from the trap were collected to build a barcode re

Mechanism of pod dehiscence in legumes: insights from phenotypic, anatomical, physiological and molecular studies.

Pod shattering describes the sudden splitting of dried mature legume pods to eject seeds via mechanical tension. Though vital for wild legume reproduction, it severely hinders crop harvesting and causes heavy yield losses, making it an unfavorable trait for cultivation. Pod shattering exists in legumes, grasses and brassicas, yet it is most prominent in legumes and a primary focus of crop domestication and breeding. This review analyzes the mechanism of pod shattering in legumes from the perspectives of morphology, anatomy of the pod suture zone, pod valve physiology, and molecular biology, wi

Interaction of endophytic microbes with legumes.

Large numbers of bacterial and fungal endophytes have been reported from different plant tissues: roots, nodules, leaves, flowers and sprouts of legumes, with numbers ranging from few to more than 150. Endophytes can accelerate seedling emergence, promote plant establishment under adverse conditions and enhance plant growth. Endophytic microbes promote plant growth by helping plants in acquiring nutrients, e.g. via nitrogen fixation, phosphate solubilization or iron chelation, by preventing pathogen infections via antifungal or antibacterial agents, by outcompeting pathogens for nutrients by s
