Many human activities and states are related to the facial muscles' actions: from the expression of emotions, stress, and non-verbal communication through health-related actions, such as coughing and sneezing to nutrition and drinking. In this work, we describe, in detail, the design and evaluation of a wearable system for facial muscle activity monitoring based on a re-configurable differential array of stethoscope-microphones. In our system, six stethoscopes are placed at locations that could easily be integrated into the frame of smart glasses. The paper describes the detailed hardware desi

A loss of functioning motor units underlies many neuromuscular disorders. The facial nerve innervates the muscles of facial expression, including nasal muscles, which also play an important role in the regulation of airflow resistance. It is difficult to accurately assess motor unit number in the facial muscles, because the muscles are difficult to activate in isolation. Here, we apply the manual McComas method to estimate the number of motor units in a nasal dilator muscle. EMG of the dilator naris was recorded during graded stimulation of the zygomatic branch of the facial nerve in 26 subjec

School nurses may be the first health professionals to assess the onset of facial paralysis/muscle weakness in school-age children. The purpose of this study was to test the psychometric properties of the Gordon Facial Muscle Weakness Assessment Tool (GFMWT) developed by Gordon. Data were collected in two phases. In Phase 1, 4 content experts independently rated each of the 22 items on the GFMWT for content relevance. The ratings were used to generate Item and Scale Content Validity Index (CVI) scores. In Phase 2, school nurses (N = 74) attending a state conference independently rated referral

We report a case of idiopathic severe facial-onset sensorimotor neuropathy with no evidence of Kennedy's disease, familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, amyloidosis, Tangier disease, sarcoidosis, chronic basilar meningitis, or Sjögren's syndrome. Clinical and neurophysiological features of this patient resemble those of four recently reported patients who were affected with facial-onset sensorimotor neuropathy (FOSMN), a probably novel disease. The present report provides information about a further patient with FOSMN in order to better characterize the clinical and laboratory features of thi

INTRODUCTION: Some observers have considered facial asymmetry as characteristic of congenital superior oblique muscle (SO) palsy. However, recent orbital imaging studies have determined that incomitant vertical strabismus resembling SO palsy can be caused by heterotopic rectus muscle pulleys. This finding suggests that facial asymmetry may predict the presence of abnormal orbital anatomy rather than be secondary to ocular torticollis.
METHODS: Subjects who underwent orbital computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging were divided into 5 groups based on clinical evaluation and previously

This paper reports our experience in facial reanimation using free innervated muscle transfer in 69 patients with long-term facial palsy. The majority of patients were treated in two stages with cross-facial nerve graft as the first stage and microvascular muscle transfer at the second stage. The gracilis muscle was used in 62 patients. A system of grading results has been utilized in the long-term evaluation. The overall final result was excellent or good in 51 percent of 47 patients who were available for follow-up. Although the results are not completely satisfactory, they justify the use o

There are currently no data on the electromyography (EMG) of all intrinsic and extrinsic ear muscles. The aim of this work was to develop a standardized protocol for a reliable surface EMG examination of all nine ear muscles in twelve healthy participants. The protocol was then applied in seven patients with unilateral postparalytic facial synkinesis. Based on anatomic preparations of all ear muscles on two cadavers, hot spots for the needle EMG of each individual muscle were defined. Needle and surface EMG were performed in one healthy participant; facial movements could be defined for the re

The present study shows that the CXCR4/SDF-1 axis regulates the migration of second branchial arch-derived muscles as well as non-somitic neck muscles. Cxcr4 is expressed by skeletal muscle progenitor cells in the second branchial arch (BA2). Muscles derived from the second branchial arch, but not from the first, fail to form in Cxcr4 mutants at embryonic days E13.5 and E14.5. Cxcr4 is also required for the development of non-somitic neck muscles. In Cxcr4 mutants, non-somitic neck muscle development is severely perturbed. In vivo experiments in chicken by means of loss-of-function approach ba

INTRODUCTION: Limb-shaking transient ischemic attack (LS-TIA) is a clinical disease with severe carotid stenosis, which is characterized by unilateral rhythmic dance or tremor like involuntary movements of arms and/or legs, but facial muscles are usually unaffected.
METHODS: Today, we report a 42-year-old man with transient ischemic attack who suffered from right limb shaking and right facial muscle twitching due to the obvious stenosis of left internal carotid artery (ICA). Written informed consent was obtained from participants according to the Declaration of Helsinki, and a local ethic com

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between the stapedius muscle and the vertical part of the facial nerve is important for surgery. The study aims to understand the spatial relationship between the stapedius muscle and the vertical part of the facial nerve in ultra-high-resolution computed tomography (U-HRCT) images.
METHODS: A total of 105 ears from the heads of 54 human cadavers were analyzed using U-HRCT. The location and direction of the stapedius muscle were evaluated with the facial nerve as the reference. The integrity of the bony septum between the two structures and the distance between the

Background: Muscular exercises of the lateral nasal wall have been described as a potential treatment of nasal valve obstruction. The objective of this study was to compare whether nasal exercises improve nasal obstruction, using a randomized controlled model. Methods: Participants were randomized into groups performing exercises targeting nasal (group A) or facial (group B) muscles. Nasal obstruction was measured using a validated standardized patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) questionnaire (Standardized Cosmesis and Health Nasal Outcomes Survey [SCHNOS]) at enrolment and at the end of

BACKGROUND: The facial nerve that traverses the lateral border of the orbicularis oculi muscle is considered the primary motor for the muscle. Nevertheless, the lateral motor supply to the orbicularis oculi muscle has not yet been fully described.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to report detailed anatomic information about the lateral motor supply route to the orbicularis oculi.
METHODS: Facial nerve branches that cross the lateral orbicularis oculi border were fully traced from the parotid border to the nerve destinations in 43 fresh hemifaces by microscopic surgical dissection and t

The role of masticatory muscle activation on pain in temporomandibular muscle and joint disorders (TMJD) is controversial. This single-group, prospective panel study examined the relationships among masticatory muscle tension, emotional distress, and TMJD pain in a sample of 7,023 observations obtained from 171 individuals using longitudinal multilevel modeling. Three main hypotheses were tested. The first posited that emotional distress and muscle tension directly influenced pain (hypothesis 1a: Distress → TMJD Pain; hypothesis 1b: Muscle Tension → TMJD Pain). The second posited that emotiona

Facial weakness is frequently observed in patients with hemispheric stroke. Most reports refer to qualitative assessment. The aim was to quantify the upper and lower facial muscle function in patients with hemispheric stroke. Three different facial expressions (forced smile, posed smile and maximum eyebrow lift) and facial rest position were mapped using a 3D video system. Twenty-seven patients with hemispheric stroke (PG) and 22 controls (CG) were recruited. Facial asymmetry was expressed as absolute side differences between four corresponding distances. In PG, a longer distance was found fro

Botulinum toxin A is a highly efficacious and cost-effective, nonsurgical option for reducing the width and shape of the lower face and jawline. The results can vary from the subtlest thinning of the face to an extremely thin, cachectic appearance. Many nuances can be achieved. The administration is simple, and the process takes barely 5 minutes in an office setting. Botulinum toxin A can also be effectively used to reduce the bulk of an enlarged parotid gland without affecting saliva production.
