Doubling down: Leveraging residents and faculty as mentors in a residency preparation program.

INTRODUCTION: Colleges or schools of pharmacy have tried various ways to prepare students for the residency recruitment process, including didactic courses, curricular tracks, and mentorship programs. The fellowship and residency advising program (FRAP) expanded mentorship to include both faculty and a resident, along with resources and recordings to support students through the residency application process, mock interviews, and phase II match PERSPECTIVE: This commentary describes the use of dual mentorship for residency-bound student pharmacists, utilizing residents from a Teaching and Lear

On the Occasion of the 80th Anniversary of the Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Hradec Králové.

Last autumn we commemorated the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Hradec Králové. A number of events were held and several publications were released, including a special issue of the Časopis lékařů českých entirely dedicated to this anniversary and to the faculty. At the ceremonial assembly of the academic community on 8 October 2025, the dean of the faculty, Professor Manďák, delivered an extensive speech in which he clearly described the historical circumstances of the faculty's foundation, its beginnings, development, and growth through va

Perspectives of US pediatric dentistry faculty on the clinical management of molar hypomineralization.

BACKGROUND: Molar hypomineralization (MH) is a qualitative enamel defect. Despite its prevalence and clinical significance, inconsistencies in MH diagnosis and management exist among dental care professionals. The authors assessed the knowledge, diagnostic accuracy, and treatment preferences of US pediatric dentistry (PD) faculty members regarding MH, with a focus on clinical decision making consistency. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was distributed to PD faculty members across the United States from April 1 through July 31, 2024. The survey assessed faculty members' knowledge of MH termi

Prevalence and impact of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders in dental students and faculty.

OBJECTIVES: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) affect individuals undergoing increased stress, for example, dental professionals. No study to date has compared dental students and faculty in TMD manifestation. This cross-sectional study compared prevalence, risk factors, and impact on daily activities of self-reported TMD signs/symptoms between dental students and faculty at a predoctoral dental school, and between preclinical (first- to second-year) and clinical (third- to fourth-year) students. METHODS: A REDCap survey was sent to dental students and faculty, assessing TMD signs/symptoms (TM

Benefits and limitations of a dual faculty neurosurgeon approach to resection of pediatric craniopharyngioma.

PURPOSE: The utility and safety of including two neurosurgeons for tumor resections is unknown. This study compares outcomes among pediatric patients with craniopharyngiomas operated on with a dual or single surgeon approach (DSA, SSA). METHODS: A single-center review identified all craniopharyngioma transsphenoidal or craniotomy resections from 2000 to 2020. Surgical years of experience (YOE) and rates of 5-year reoperations, complications, recurrence, and postoperative radiotherapy were analyzed. RESULTS: Twenty-six transsphenoidal and 68 craniotomies were identified among 62 patients. Ele

Nursing Faculty Professional Quality of Life and Resilience in a Changing Educational Environment.

BACKGROUND: Growing workload demands of nursing faculty has led to an academic work environment that is stressful with loss of work life balance and occupational burnout. METHOD: Full-time faculty were surveyed prior to the pandemic at a private school of nursing using the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL), Bride Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale (STSS), Conner-Davidson Resilience-10 (CDRS-10), and Trauma Informed Climate Scale (TICS-10). RESULTS: The ProQOL revealed moderate faculty burnout scores (mean score, 25.8). The STSS identified two thirds of faculty experienced secondary traumat

Development of clinical care guidelines for faculty and residents in the era of COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The global COVID-19 pandemic brings new challenges to otolaryngology resident education. Surgical volume and clinic visits are curtailed, personal protective equipment for operating room participation is restricted, and the risk of COVID-19 disease transmission during heretofore routine patient care is the new norm. METHODS: We describe a small-team "cohorting" protocol including guidelines for faculty and resident in common clinical scenarios with attention paid to the risk of common otolaryngologic procedures. RESULTS: A rotating small-team approach was implemented at each clin

[The pineal gland as physical tool of the soul faculties: a persistent historical connection].

INTRODUCTION: The anatomic seat of the human soul has been a controversial matter of discussion in the philosophical, theological and scientific fields throughout history. One of more known hypotheses on this subject was proposed by Descartes, for whom the soul would host in the pineal gland, a brain body with a special location that would adequately address the functionalism of the human body. DEVELOPMENT: In this work, we discuss the historical influences which made possible the Cartesian model of the relationship between spirit (res cogitans) and body-machine (res extensa) and the technica

Educating overseas students: just another responsibility or a chance to grow for faculty?

With a gradual decrease of the university-entering young population, Japanese universities face more and more competition for survival. It is up to each university's efforts to be distinctive and competitive to flourish toward the 21st century. At Tokyo Medical and Dental University, the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry will be reorganised in April 2000 as a graduate-school-centred university, where faculty will face increased demands in research activities while maintaining or even improving undergraduate education. On the other hand, our university has a 20-year history of ac

Reliability of faculty assessments of student case histories: a problem in chiropractic education.

A competency based educational model necessitates reliable evaluation. This study examined faculty reliability in assessing students' case histories at one chiropractic college. Previous studies have found great variation in faculty assessment of clinical performance in medical residents. In this study, sixteen faculty members at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College evaluated three case histories by completing five rating scales on each one. The study found little faculty agreement in judging the case histories. Faculty evaluations ranged from extremely poor to extremely excellent for th

The Cohen Scholars Program Revisions: Improving Transition to the Nurse Faculty Role.

The nursing faculty shortage necessitates approaches to increase and retain faculty. The grant-funded Cohen Scholars program in Maryland provides graduate tuition in exchange for nurse educator employment. Programmatic revisions in 2020 incorporated mentorship, role socialization, pedagogy, and employment assistance to improve graduate preparedness. This study aimed to evaluate the revisions' impact on graduates' perceived preparedness and role transition via a survey of the 2020 to 2023 cohorts. Statistical analysis showed no significant differences between cohorts, though there was a trend t

Multivariate modeling of organizational dynamics and faculty well-being in higher education.

BACKGROUND: Leadership styles are increasingly recognised as strategic organizational resources for faculty well-being, yet the evidence remains fragmented: prior studies have examined leadership, workplace harassment-systematic, recurrent negative acts that constrain the target's capacity for self-defence-and psychological resources in isolation, and rarely within a single explanatory model. Whether these processes operate equivalently for male and female faculty has been largely untested, despite its direct relevance for equitable university management. AIM: To test an integrated structural

Faculty-Led Study Abroad Programs and Learning Sustainability: A Southeast Asian Context.

As a widely offered course in International Relations (IR) programs, the teaching and learning of Southeast Asian Regional Dynamics (SARD) struggles to adopt a pedagogical strategy that counters stagnancy and passive learning. The problem is exacerbated when SARD courses discuss topics of sustainability in Southeast Asia, which obligates instructors to introduce complex empirical cases that may be difficult for students to grasp. As a means to ignite the students' interests and allow a platform in which students can see directly the issues that defy sustainable development in the region, this
