An Exploratory Study of Conflict and Its Management in Systems of Care for Children with Mental, Emotional, or Behavioral Problems and Their Families.

Since 1993, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has invested more than $1 billion establishing systems of care (SOC) in over 173 local communities to provide services to children with mental, emotional, and behavioral problems and their families. The SOC model requires that effective partnerships be developed between parents and professionals and also among different service sectors and agencies. To date, there has been no systematic examination of these interagency partnerships associated with the presence of conflict and its management. This paper reports the findin

Implications of conflicting definitions of probability to health risk communication: a case study of familial cancer and genetic counselling.

The question of what probability actually is has long been debated in philosophy and statistics. Although the concept of probability is fundamental to many applications in the health sciences, these debates are generally not well known to health professionals. This paper begins with an outline of some of the different interpretations of probability. Examples are provided of how each interpretation manifests in clinical practice. The discipline of genetic counselling (familial cancer) is used to ground the discussion. In the second part of the paper, some of the implications that different inte

Adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: mother-adolescent interactions, family beliefs and conflicts, and maternal psychopathology.

A group of 83 adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were subdivided into those with ADHD alone (n = 27) and those with ADHD and oppositional defiant disorder (ADHD/ODD, n = 56). They were compared to each other and a community control group (n = 77) on measures of family conflicts, family beliefs, maternal adjustment, and observations of mother-adolescent interactions during both a neutral and conflict discussion. Both ADHD groups had more topics on which there was conflict and more angry conflicts at home than control adolescents on parent reports. Only the ADHD/ODD

A mediational model of the impact of marital conflict on adolescent adjustment in intact and divorced families: the role of disrupted parenting.

The present study was concerned with the development and testing of a structural equation model wherein the relation of interparental conflict to the adjustment problems of young adolescents is mediated through its impact on 3 aspects of parenting behavior: lax control, psychological control, and parental rejection/withdrawal. The model was tested separately on a sample of 46 young adolescents from intact families and a group of 51 adolescents from recently divorced families. The hypothesis that most of the relation between martial conflict and adolescent adjustment problems could be explained

Investigating the association between work family conflict (WFC) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in an Australian community-based cohort study.

PURPOSE: Difficulties managing work and family demands are common and have been found to be associated with stress and poor mental health. However, very few studies have examined Work Family Conflict (WFC) in connection with diagnosable anxiety disorders (and none with Australian representative data). The current study investigated whether high WFC was significantly associated with a diagnosis of Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) after controlling for a broad range of socio-demographic contextual factors, related psychosocial job, family and individual characteristics, and prior anxiety sympt

Israeli Health Care Social Workers' Personal and Professional Concerns during the COVID-19 Pandemic Crisis: The Work-Family Role Conflict.

This exploratory study focuses on the personal and professional concerns of Israeli social workers in hospitals and community health settings during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Other studies omitted health care social workers' needs and concerns. Participants included 126 social workers (120 females, 5 males and 1 other gender identity) in hospitals and community health settings who completed an online survey during the height of the first wave of COVID-19 in Israel. Measures included questions on exposure to COVID-19, sense of safety at work, perceived support, and personal and profe

The Role of Institutional Placement, Family Conflict, and Homosexuality in Homelessness Pathways Among Latino LGBT Youth in New York City.

Despite the overrepresentation of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) youth among the homeless, the processes leading to their homelessness are understudied. This ethnographic study sought to elucidate the role of sexual orientation in the pathway to housing instability among young gay men. Fieldwork included 18 months of participant observations in public spaces and at a homeless LGBT youth organization in New York City, as well as formal semistructured interviews with 14 Latino young men and five staff. Three distinct pathways emerged. Some youth became homeless after placement in

Hostile, aggressive family conflict trajectories during the transition to adulthood: associations with adolescent Big Five and emerging adulthood adjustment problems.

The goal of this longitudinal study was to investigate the relation of adolescents' Big Five factor (BFF) personality to the development of different patterns of mother-adolescent hostile, aggressive conflict (MHAC) from late adolescence to young adulthood. Furthermore, we examined the prediction of Antisocial Problems (AP) and Depressive Problems (DP) in emerging adulthood from BFF and MHAC trajectories. 385 adolescents participated in this study (age 15-16 at Time 1 and 21-22 at Time 4). Using latent growth curve analysis, Low stable (69.1%), Medium Increasing, (23.3%), and High decreasing (

Occupational burnout during war: The role of stress, disruptions in routine, sleep, work-family conflict, and organizational support as a moderator.

BACKGROUND: Occupational burnout, resulting from long-term exposure to work-related stressors, is a significant risk factor for both physical and mental health of employees. Most research on burnout focuses on routine situations, with less attention given to its causes and manifestations during prolonged national crises such as war. According to the Conservation of Resources theory, wartime conditions are associated with a loss of resources, leading to accelerated burnout. This study aimed to examine burnout among employees during the war in Israel that broke out in October 2023, placing the p

The mediation effect of the inferior-parietal cortex and globus pallidus on the relationship between family conflict and major depressive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Family conflict is an important risk factor for major depressive disorder (MDD) and is associated with structural alterations in the brain. However, it is unclear whether structural alterations associated with family conflict would contribute to depression. This study aims to investigate the neuroimaging characteristics that connect family conflict with depression. METHODS: This study included 54 healthy controls and 53 antidepressant-free patients with MDD. Both groups completed the Beck Depression Inventory-II, the simplified Chinese version of the Family Environment Scale, and t

Work-Family Behavioral Role Conflict and Turnover Intention Among Clinical Nurses: Multiple Mediating Effects of Role Overload, Presenteeism, and Psychological Capital.

BACKGROUND: Work-family behavioral role conflict (WFBRC) is an important stressor in the nursing work environment and may be associated with turnover intention. However, the roles of role overload, presenteeism, and (PsyCap) in this relationship have rarely been examined simultaneously among Chinese clinical nurses. AIMS: Guided by the Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study aimed to examine the relationship between WFBRC and turnover intention among Chinese clinical nurses, as well as the mediating and moderating roles of role overload, presenteeism, and PsyCap. METHODS: This was

The support paradox: work family conflict, glass ceiling barriers, technostress, and job satisfaction among female academics in Indonesian Catholic higher education.

INTRODUCTION: Female academics face multidimensional institutional demands arising from work-family conflict, glass ceiling barriers, and technostress, which may undermine job satisfaction. Although supportive organizational culture is frequently regarded as an important organizational resource, limited evidence is available regarding its capacity to buffer the adverse associations between these demands and job satisfaction. This study examines these relationships among female academics employed in Indonesian Catholic higher education institutions. METHODS: A quantitative cross-sectional surv

Effects of effort-reward imbalance on emergency nurses' health: a mediating and moderating role of emotional exhaustion and work-family conflict.

BACKGROUND: Effort-reward imbalance (ERI) is a prevalent issue in the healthcare sector, particularly in the high-intensity, high-risk, and high-stress environment of the emergency department. This results in emergency department nurses bearing heavier workloads, responsibilities, and time commitments compared to their counterparts in other departments. ERI poses significant risks to their physical, psychological, and sleep quality. Therefore, it is essential to explore the mechanisms through which ERI influences the health of emergency department nurses. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this investigat

Associations between the quality of family interactions during a mother-father-adolescent conflict discussion task and physiological emotion regulation in adolescents.

Emotion regulation (ER) is a key competence in adolescence that is related to multiple psychological outcomes, including adaptive functioning and psychopathological symptoms. The development of ER skills is closely associated with a child's family relational context. Nevertheless, few studies have investigated the physiological ER of adolescents during family interactions that go beyond the mother-adolescent dyad. Thus, little is understood regarding which features of communication in the mother-father-adolescent triad (e.g., warmth of affective exchanges) are relevant to adolescents' physiolo

How is work-family conflict linked to nurse-assessed patient safety among intensive care unit nurses? A serial multiple mediation analysis.

AIM: The aim of this study was to test whether rumination and negative affectivity mediate the relationship between work-family conflict and nurse-assessed patient safety among intensive care unit nurses. BACKGROUND: Most intensive care unit nurses experience work-family conflicts that jeopardise patient safety. Although prior studies have explored the effect of work-family conflict on patient safety, few have investigated whether work-family conflict is associated with patient safety through rumination and negative affectivity among intensive care unit nurses. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.

Shedding Light on the Adverse Spillover Effects of Work-Family Conflict on Unethical Sales Behaviors at Work: A Daily Diary Study.

Oro-mandibular defect reconstruction is always a challenge following the excision of oral cavity malignancies. Free flaps are considered ideal for the reconstruction of postexcision defects. Alternatively, regional flaps, like Nasolabial flaps, can be used as a workhorse for the reconstruction of various oral cavity defects with acceptable cosmesis. We have described here the various innovations and modifications of this flap that can be used for the repair of different subsites of the oral cavity. Fifty-eight nasolabial flap reconstructions in fifty-seven patients with malignancy of lips and

"Go back to your country": Exploring nurses' experiences of workplace conflict involving patients and patients' family members in two Canadian cities.

This study explores nurses' experiences of workplace conflict with patients and their family members, how it differs by ethnic/racial identity, and highlights the coping strategies engaged to lessen these conflicts. Using a qualitative research design, this study draws on phenomenology and in-depth interviews of 66 registered nurses and registered practical nurses from multiple sites in two Canadian cities to explore the experiences of nurses with multiple marginalized identities in relation to nurse-patient and nurse-patient's family member conflicts in direct care practice. The results show
