The Zika outbreak in Brazil caused congenital impairments and developmental delays, or Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS). We sought to ascertain whether a family support programme was needed and, if so, could be adapted from the Getting to Know Cerebral Palsy programme (GTKCP) designed for children with cerebral palsy (CP). We conducted a systematic review of the needs of families of children with CZS or CP in low- and middle-income countries and reviewed the findings of the Social and Economic Impact of Zika study. We undertook a scoping visit to three facilities offering services to children wi

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the costs of building a public health infrastructure for delivering a population-wide evidence-based multi-level system of parenting interventions to strengthen parenting; reduce risk for child maltreatment and coercive parenting practices; and reduce the prevalence of early child behavioral and emotional problems.
METHODS: Using data from 9 South Carolina counties, this study examines the costs to service agencies of training a wide range of providers. Using data on the number of children and families served, the paper estimates the total costs of training providers s

The objective of the present study was to establish the psychosocial characteristics and perspectives of 49 consecutive homeless families who received input from a new designated family support worker (FSW) post at a large statutory hostel for homeless parents and children. The FSW provided: assessment of social, educational and health needs; support and parent training; and liaison with and referral to specialist services. Measures included quantitative questionnaires (i.e. the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Parenting Daily Hassles Scale, the Eyberg Child Behaviour Inventory, and

Maternal incompetence in childrearing is described in three widely different cultural settings in the southern Negev area of Israel. It is suggested that this incompetence stems from "abandonment" of the parents by traditional family support systems and is reinforced by the inability or lack of readiness of the health system to supply the missing support mechanisms. This picture of parental "abandonment" in widely different cultural settings in Israel may represent an end result of cultural and social upheaval common to other communities in the world. Techniques for prevention include improvin

Homelessness impacts entire families, with potential intergenerational consequences. Addressing family homelessness provides both immediate relief and long-term societal benefits. While various programs exist to mitigate homelessness, the United States (US) Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program offers a distinctive model for combating homelessness among veterans by supporting their families as well. We analyzed VA SSVF administrative data from 2014 to 2022, covering over 800,000 program entries from all SSVF beneficiaries in the US, to des

This pilot feasibility study examined the effects of a new trauma-informed parenting program, Family Life Skills Triple P (FLSTP), in an open uncontrolled trial conducted in a regular service delivery context via video conferencing. FLSTP was trialed as a group-delivered 10-session intervention. Program modules target positive parenting skills (4 sessions) and adult life skills including coping with emotions, taking care of relationships, self-care, dealing with the past, healthy living, and planning for the future. Participants were 50 parents with multiple vulnerabilities, due to social disa

We describe family caregiver (FCG) participation in a tailored coping and communication support intervention for advanced cancer patients and families. Preliminary descriptive data on characteristics and patterns of early engagement in the intervention for 132 FCGs are presented. Engagement assessed at an initial in-person meeting and the following 6 weeks includes problems raised, strategies used, and initiation, frequency, and mode of contact. A sizable proportion of FCGs were male, African American, and nonspouse. The FCGs had modest scores on a standard survey measure of burden yet volunte

BACKGROUND: HIV-related stigma and symptoms of depression (SOD) in people living with HIV (PLWH) remain public health challenges in many countries. This study determined the levels of support PLWH received from family and community and their impact on HIV-related stigma and SOD.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with PLWH at four outpatient clinics in four districts in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews. Social support and family support were measured using the Health Outcomes Research Social Support Survey and the Family Support Scale.

INTRODUCTION: Drawing on the Conservation of Resources theory and the work-family enrichment framework, this study posits that resources acquired in the workplace, such as supervisor support, generate benefits that enhance outcomes both within the work domain and across the family domain. While work-to-family enrichment (WtoFE) is a recognized driver of job and family satisfaction, research exploring how these resources cross over to affect the well-being of both partners and their adolescent children remains limited. The research explored both the direct and indirect relationships, as well as

INTRODUCTION: Family-based treatment (FBT) is a first-line psychotherapy for children and adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN). However, families must understand the principles of FBT, provide meal support, and manage their children's pathological behaviors. Difficulties occur outside clinic hours when it is impossible to consult professionals. This "support gap" increases caregivers' psychological distress and threatens their treatment continuity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first domain-specific generative artificial intelligence (AI) agent designed to provide situation-speci

Family caregiver burden, the physical, emotional, and financial strain experienced by informal caregivers, has been well documented for nearly a century. Early 20th-century observations highlighted the toll of caring for chronically ill relatives, noting how prolonged care could strain family relations and even lead to disintegration of family life. Since then, an ever-expanding body of research has repeatedly confirmed that family caregivers across diverse conditions and cultures commonly experience high levels of burden. In recent years, numerous studies have been published with the aim of e

It is now well recognized that severe maternal morbidity and traumatic experiences during childbirth can have medical and psychological sequelae well after hospital discharge. The words used when communicating with patients can have a profound effect, especially when a severe maternal event has occurred. To create a patient care discussion (patient debrief) framework, a clinician-patient committee was formed to develop guiding principles with input from multiple perspectives as a part of a two-state quality-improvement project. The "Supportive Communication After a Severe Maternal Event: What

ObjectiveFamilies impacted by a craniofacial condition have reported mixed experiences of psychosocial support; however, the experience of Australian parents is not yet known. The current study therefore explores the psychosocial experiences, and needs, of Australian parents whose child has been diagnosed with craniosynostosis.DesignQualitative data were obtained from 21 online narrative interviews with parents of children with non-syndromic and syndromic craniosynostosis. Interviews were transcribed and reflexive thematic analysis was used to generate themes.ResultsFour themes were developed:

This article examines the degree to which major domains of child development are affected by Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS)/Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS). Using cross-sectional survey data collected with an international sample of parents who identify as having children with PANS/PANDAS (N = 402), this study analyzed parent-reported developmental impacts and access to treatment and adequate supports. Parents reported that PANS/PANDAS negatively impacted their children's development across all domains: E

BACKGROUND: Over 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents who have limited knowledge about deafness and require comprehensive support and information to support and communicate with their deaf child. However, little is known about the systems that support hearing families with deaf children. We performed a scoping review to provide an overview of current literature on the topic.
METHODS: The protocol of the scoping review was prepared using the PRISMA statement guidelines for scoping reviews. Relevant search terms were used to identify eligible studies following discussion with the st

Around 20,000 neonatal deaths occur each year, many from congenital heart defects such as hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Nurses are on the frontline of caring for families experiencing neonatal loss. Careful spiritual and cultural assessment, attention to beliefs, focusing on relationship, and helping families create legacy can assist with grieving and making meaning out of loss.
