Is it just a cure? Re-evaluating the effects of prenatal exposure to the Great Chinese Famine on the risk of infectious diseases in adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Very limited studies focused on the early-life adversities on infectious diseases. Taking the Great Chinese famine as a natural experiment, this study re-evaluated the long-term effect of prenatal famine exposure on infectious diseases by using nationally representative data. METHODS: Using difference-in-difference (DID) models, we analyzed 215,216 adults who participated in the Second National Sample Survey on Disability in 2006 across 734 counties of China to detect the effects of prenatal exposure to the Great Chinese Famine on the risk of infectious diseases in adulthood. Infe

Exposure to the Great Famine in Early Life and the Risk of Obesity in Adulthood: A Report Based on the China Health and Nutrition Survey.

Intrauterine malnutrition has a long-term effect on human health. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between exposure to famine in early life and obesity in adulthood in Chinese adults. A total of 5033 participants (22,132 observations) of the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) in 1991-2015 were classified into three famine exposure groups according to their birth year: unexposed (1963-1966), fetal-exposed (1959-1962) and childhood-exposed (1955-1958). Compared with the unexposed group, the fetal-exposed group had higher levels of body-mass-index (BMI) and waist-circumference

Relief food subsistence revealed by microparticle and proteomic analyses of dental calculus from victims of the Great Irish Famine.

Food and diet were class markers in 19th-century Ireland, which became evident as nearly 1 million people, primarily the poor and destitute, died as a consequence of the notorious Great Famine of 1845 to 1852. Famine took hold after a blight (Phytophthora infestans) destroyed virtually the only means of subsistence-the potato crop-for a significant proportion of the population. This study seeks to elucidate the variability of diet in mid-19th-century Ireland through microparticle and proteomic analysis of human dental calculus samples (n = 42) from victims of the famine. The samples derive fro

Social-economic inequalities and early-life exposure to famine contribute to low grip strength: The China National Health Survey.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The relationship between socio-economic inequalities (SEIs) and early life malnutrition with muscle health remains unclear. This study aims to examine the effects of SEIs and early life exposure to famine on relative hand grip strength (rHGS). METHODS AND RESULTS: We analyzed data of 37,008 individuals from the China National Health Survey. SEI were assessed using the Population Attributable Fraction (PAF), the Relative Index of Inequality (RII), and the Slope Index of Inequality (SII). The propensity score matching and cohort size shrinkage index were used to examine the

The association between China's Great famine and risk of breast cancer according to hormone receptor status: a hospital-based study.

PURPOSE: The Great Chinese Famine afflicted almost all Chinese people between 1959 and 1961. No study has explicitly assessed the association between an exposure to Chinese Famine and risk of overall breast cancer and tumor subtype. We evaluated the unique historical environmental influences of famine exposure on breast cancer subtypes. METHODS: 16,469 Chinese women who were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in the Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center (FUSCC) from 1999 to 2014 were analyzed. Four tumor subtypes were defined by both estrogen-receptor (ER) and progesterone-receptor (PR)

Long-Term Impact of the Great Chinese Famine on the Risks of Specific Arrhythmias and Severe Hypertension in the Offspring at an Early Stage of Aging.

Perinatal malnutrition affects postnatal cardiovascular functions. This study used the Great Chinese Famine (GCF) to determine the long-term impact of perinatal undernutrition on hypertension and arrhythmias in older offspring. Subjects (n = 10,065) were divided into an exposed group whose fetal life was in the GCF and an unexposed group. The exposed group showed higher systolic/diastolic pressure, heart rate, and total cholesterol. Perinatal exposure to the GCF was a significant risk to Grade 2 and Grade 3 hypertension (OR = 1.724, 95%CI: 1.441-2.064, p < 0.001; OR = 1.480, 95%CI: 1.050-2.086

Association between famine exposure and type 2 diabetes mellitus over the last three decades: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Early-life nutritional deprivation from famine may increase lifelong vulnerability to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). This Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis evaluated studies published over the past three decades to assess and appraise the association between famine exposure across developmental stages and T2DM risk. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library identified observational studies published between 1995 and 2025. Studies reporting risk estimates or data enabling calculation of risk ratios (RRs) were included, followed by pooled estimates were generated. Methodologic

Forty years later: adult health and non-communicable disease following the 1984-1985 Great Ethiopian Famine - a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: As the threat of child malnutrition increases, the focus remains mostly on short-term consequences. Long-term sequelae are increasingly recognised but lack strong evidence, and many studies face methodological limitations. METHOD: A retrospective cohort of survivors of the 1984-1985 Great-Ethiopian Famine was compared with two novel control groups: born post-famine; and age category- and sex-matched controls. Exposure to famine at different age categories was explored (fetal, 0-2, 2-5, 5-10 and 10-18 years). Follow-up was 40 years later. Outcomes included anthropometry, body compo

An industrial perspective on metabolic responses of Penicillium chrysogenum to periodic dissolved oxygen feast-famine cycles in a scale-down system.

While traveling through different zones in large-scale bioreactors, microbes are most likely subjected to fluctuating dissolved oxygen (DO) conditions at the timescales of global circulation time. In this study, to mimic industrial-scale spatial DO gradients, we present a scale-down setup based on dynamic feast/famine regime (150 s) that leads to repetitive cycles with rapid changes in DO availability in glucose-limited chemostat cultures of Penicillium chrysogenum. Such DO feast/famine regime induced a stable and repetitive pattern with a reproducible metabolic response in time, and the dynam

Elevated levels of protein in urine in adulthood after exposure to the Chinese famine of 1959-61 during gestation and the early postnatal period.

BACKGROUND: Animal models have suggested that undernutrition during gestation and the early postnatal period may adversely affect kidney development and compromise renal function. As a natural experiment, famines provide an opportunity to test such potential effects in humans. We assessed whether exposure to the Chinese famine of 1959-1961 during gestation and early postnatal life was associated with the levels of proteinuria among female adults three decades after exposure to the famine. METHODS: We measured famine intensity using the cohort size shrinkage index and we constructed a differen

Simulating the Interplay between the Uptake of Inorganic Phosphate and the Cell Phosphate Metabolism under Phosphorus Feast and Famine Conditions in Chlorella vulgaris.

Using a mathematical simulation approach, we studied the dynamics of the green microalga Chlorella vulgaris phosphate metabolism response to shortage and subsequent replenishing of inorganic phosphate in the medium. A three-pool interaction model was used to describe the phosphate uptake from the medium, its incorporation into the cell organic compounds, its storage in the form of polyphosphates, and culture growth. The model comprises a system of ordinary differential equations. The distribution of phosphorous between cell pools was examined for three different stages of the experiment: growt

Skeletal manifestations of stress in child victims of the Great Irish Famine (1845-1852): prevalence of enamel hypoplasia, Harris lines, and growth retardation.

The Great Irish Famine of 1845-1852 is among the worst food crises in human history. While numerous aspects of this period have been studied by generations of scholars, relatively little attention has so far been given to the physiological impact it is likely to have had on the people who suffered and succumbed to it. This study examines the prevalence of enamel hypoplasia, Harris lines, and growth retardation in the nonadult proportion of a skeletal population comprising victims of the Famine who died in the workhouse in the city of Kilkenny between 1847 and 1851. The frequency of enamel hypo
