Incidence of plantar fascia ruptures following corticosteroid injection.

Plantar fasciitis is commonly treated with corticosteroid injections to decrease pain and inflammation. Therapeutic benefits often vary in terms of efficacy and duration. Rupture of the plantar fascia has been reported as a possible complication following corticosteroid injection. A retrospective chart review of 120 patients who received corticosteroid injection for plantar fasciitis was performed at the authors' institution to determine the incidence of plantar fascia rupture. The plantar fascia rupture was diagnosed clinically and confirmed with magnetic resonance imaging. Various factors we

Ultrasound evaluation of a spontaneous plantar fascia rupture.

Plantar fascia rupture is an occasional complication in patients with chronic plantar fasciitis or in patients with plantar fasciitis treated with steroid injection. Very few cases of spontaneous plantar fascia rupture have been reported in the literature (Herrick and Herrick, Am J Sports Med 1983;11:95; Lun et al, Clin J Sports Med 1999;9:48-9; Rolf et al, J Foot Ankle Surg 1997;36:112-4; Saxena and Fullem, Am J Sports Med 2004;32:662-5). Spontaneous medial plantar fascia rupture in a 37-yr-old man with no preceding symptoms or steroid injections was confirmed with diagnostic ultrasound, whic

Incudostapedial joint arthroplasty using temporalis fascia/perichondrium ties.

Incudostapedial joint dislocation is the most frequently found ossicular chain defect. In these cases reconstitution of joint capsule is important in maintaining joint integrity. But reconstruction of dislocated incudostapedial joint is a challenging procedure as this joint is devoid of any muscular or soft tissue support. Here we describe a technique designed to reposition the incudostapedial joint in its anatomical position using temporalis fascia or perichondrium. Data have been collected and analyzed from 42 patients with incudostapedial joint discontinuity. The fascial ties used for recon

Anatomy of tympanoparotid fascia relating to neck lift.

The aim of this study is to elucidate anatomical detail of the tympanoparotid fascia (TPF), deployed anteroinferiorly to the tragus, in relation to neck lift and platysmaplasty. Forty-one hemifaces of 25 Korean adult cadavers (age range: 43-101 years, 19 males and 6 females) were used for the study. Thirty-seven were dissected. Twenty-one were used for tension measurement and 4 for the histologic study. Tympanoparotid fascia was found in almost 36 hemifaces (100%). It was white-colored dense connective layer anteroinferior to tragus. The whitish fascia was a dense connective tissue layer deplo

Pyomyositis of tensor fascia lata: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Pyomyositis is a disease in which an abscess is formed deep within large striated muscles. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 10-year-old boy who presented with fever and a painful hip and was subsequently diagnosed with pyomyositis of the tensor fascia lata. In children with clinical and laboratory findings of inflammation in the vicinity of the hip joint, the differential diagnosis includes transient synovitis, an early stage of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, infectious arthritis of the hip, rheumatologic diseases and extracapsular infection such as osteomyelitis. Dimensional stability of free fascia grafts: clinical application.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Animal experiments and human studies show that autologous fascia lata and temporal fascia change their dimensions during first 5 days of healing. Poor dimensional stability of the temporal fascia grafts may be responsible for the residual perforation sometimes seen in clinical practice. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective. METHODS: Tympanoplasties performed for large perforations or granular myringitis using either fascia lata or temporal fascia as graft material are included. The ears are divided into two groups. Group I includes ears with fascia lata, and group II includes e

Dorsal hand coverage with free serratus fascia flap.

In reconstructing a defect on the dorsum of the hand, with the extensor tendons exposed or even missing, functional, as well as cosmetic, goals are of major importance. The authors present three cases of extensor tendon reconstruction, combined with soft-tissue reconstruction, with the free serratus fascia flap, the connective tissue over the serratus muscle, for dorsal hand coverage. The flap consists of thin and well-vascularized pliable tissue, with gliding properties excellent for covering exposed tendons. It is based on the branches of the thoracodorsal artery, which are raised in the fla

Harvesting large fascia lata sheaths: a rational approach.

This article describes an "S"-shaped incision for the open approach of harvesting wide sheets of fascia lata with reference to the important anatomical landmarks. Forty-three patients required dural replacement in cases of tumors, trauma, or cerebrospinal fluid leak involving the anterior skull base. The extended anterior suberanial approach to the skull base was used for all patients. Early functional status of the operated limb in seven of the patients treated first was assessed by physical examination and then by means of the computerized Kinetic Communicator (Kin-Com; Medex Diagnostics, Ca

Banked fascia lata as an orbital floor implant.

Synthetic orbital floor implants carry the risk of infection, rejection, anterior migration with prolapse, and posterior migration with optic nerve compression. Banked irradiated homologous fascia lata has been used as an orbital floor implant in the repair of 18 patients with surgically indicated orbital floor fractures. All patients had improvement in diplopia. There was no infection, anterior migration, or posterior migration of the implant. There was no reported transmission of communicable diseases. Early results suggest that banked irradiated fascia can be used effectively and safely as

[Fascia compartment syndrome of the iliac-psoas compartment].

The iliacus compression syndrome has a kind of exceptional position--as to genesis, development and therapy--in comparison with the other compartment-compression syndromes of the limbs. Indeed there exist similar pathophysiological, rules, but the special anatomic facts enlarge the etiological, differential-diagnostic and therapeutic spectrum. Thus, concerning the frequency of causes, not the trauma but the spontaneous bleeding in coagulation disturbances takes the first place, and unusual causes, such as rupturing aortic aneurysms, have to be included in the differential diagnostic discussion

Ultrasonography of the Fasciae and Common Pathologies: The Game Changer.

Ultrasound (US) is rapidly gaining attraction among physicians for the evaluation of fasciae. Unlike traditional imaging, which often lacks specificity of pain localization, US examination stands out as a versatile tool, capable of detecting both structural and functional information. This unique capability allows for a comprehensive assessment of fasciae-the intricate connective tissue essential for human biomechanics. US examination offers a multiparametric approach for the assessment of thickness, echogenicity, stiffness, deformation and shear strain. This comprehensive examination is inval

Role of fasciae in nonspecific low back pain.

More and more evidences show how the thoracolumbar fascia is involved with nonspecific low back pain. Additionally, recent studies about anatomy have shown the presence of a continuity between the thoracolumbar fascia and the deep fascia of the limbs; but actually, a dysfunction of just the thoracolumbar fascia or of the tightly contiguous myofascial tissue is generally recognized as possible cause of nonspecific low back pain. Five patients among those affected by nonspecific low back pain were manipulated just on those fascial spots that were painful, when palpated, and located in other area

Mycobacterial pseudotumor of the plantar fascia: how common is it?

Mycobacterial spindle cell pseudotumor (MSCP) is an extremely rare complication of mycobacterial infections. It has been reported to occur in various sites such as skin, lymph nodes, bone marrow, lungs, and spleen. This tumor-like lesion can be confused clinically as well as radiographically with dermatofibroma, nodular fasciitis, xanthogranuloma, and Kaposi's sarcoma. While this lesion is rare and has been previously reported to occur only in superficial skin, we emphasize its consideration and inclusion in the differential diagnoses when a deep soft tissue mass is complicated by symptoms of

Getting to the heel of the problem: plantar fascia lesions.

Heel pain is a frequent disabling symptom. Clinical diagnosis is often difficult with a large range of possible diagnoses. Lesions of the plantar fascia form an important group. We present a review describing the common lesions of the plantar fascia, including plantar fasciitis, plantar fascia rupture, plantar fibromatosis, and plantar xanthoma, and illustrate them with appropriate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound imaging. We also address foreign-body reactions, enthesopathy, and diabetic fascial disease.
