Abdominal compartment syndrome is a cause of significant morbidity and mortality among surgical patients. It has traditionally been treated by abdominal decompression with the associated risks of chronic incisional hernia and enteroatmospheric fistula. Subcutaneous linea alba fasciotomy has recently been described as a new surgical technique for the treatment of abdominal compartment syndrome secondary to acute pancreatitis. This technique reduces intraabdominal pressure and restores organ function while maintaining the skin and peritoneum intact for visceral protection. We describe the applic

Fasciotomy incisions are essential to relieve pressure on the neurovascular structures in the limbs. However, closing such wounds often becomes a challenge to the surgeon. The aim of this study is to describe a simple and cheap method of closing these wounds. Plastic bands were used to gradually close fasciotomy wounds in five patients. All fasciotomy wounds in the five patients closed successfully within 4-12 days. Only two patients developed minimal complications in the form of minor wound infection and a hypertrophic scar. We conclude that the plastic band method used here is cheaper and si

Percutaneous needle fasciotomy treatment of Dupuytren's disease has been used on the continent for over two decades but has only recently gained popularity in the UK. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence published guidance in February 2004 stating that the procedure is safe and effective. We report a case of two complications in the same patient following the use of the technique, on only one occasion, in a patient who was anticoagulated. We believe that it is the first time that a false aneurysm has been reported following the procedure and that this was probably related to the inhi

The earthquakes in Kahramanmaras, Turkey, on February 6, 2023, caused many crush injuries complicated by acute compartment syndrome (ACS). This study assessed how fasciotomy timing (rubble-to-fasciotomy time, RFT) affects survival, limb viability, and functional outcomes. We retrospectively analyzed 145 patients (mean age: 29.2 ± 17.5 years) with crush injuries and ACS who underwent fasciotomy. RFT was grouped as 0-24, 25-48, 49-72, 73-96, and >97 hours. Outcomes were classified as full minor deficits, major deficits, amputation and death. Patients with full recovery or minor deficits were cons

UNLABELLED: Dupuytren's contracture is common among older people in Sweden. Previous studies comparing the treatment with an injection of collagenase with percutaneous needle fasciotomy found no differences.
METHODS: We retrospectively compared the degree of improvement in the deficit in extension of the joints in 2 groups of patients who had been treated with collagenase (71 fingers) or needle fasciotomy (109 fingers) before and 1 year after treatment. We compared the improvement of the extension deficit among the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) and proximal interphalangeal joints before and after

Acute compartment syndrome (ACS) in tibial diaphyseal fractures has been associated with such complications as infection, delayed fracture healing or non-union, sensory and motor deficits, deformities, and poor functional outcome. Essential condition of an uncomplicated recovery is early diagnosis with prompt decompression. A comprehensive review of the literature was performed to evaluate the impact of compartment syndrome and leg fasciotomies on the time to fracture union and the incidence of delayed union and non-union in tibial diaphyseal fractures. A total of 16 articles, which included 2

Three patients with calcaneal fractures developed clawing of the lesser toes as a late sequela. Believing that this complication may be the result of contractures from an occult compartment syndrome of the foot, an investigation of the anatomical compartments of the foot was performed. The various compartments of 17 unembalmed adult lower limb specimens were injected with dyed gelatin in a controlled fashion. After freezing, the feet were sectioned either transversely or sagittally. The distribution of the dyed gelatin was then studied. Nine compartments were identified. These were the (1) med

Twenty-three patients were reviewed an average of 5.3 years after a closed palmar fasciotomy for the correction of Dupuytren's contracture. Results suggest that this procedure is best suited to those whose contracture is mainly at the MP joint and that approximately 55% of such patients can expect the correction to be maintained for at least five years. In those patients with severe deformity affecting the PIP joint in addition to the MP joint, this may be a useful preliminary procedure, but is unlikely to be of any long term benefit.

BACKGROUND: Chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS) is an underrecognized cause of lower extremity dysfunction in athletes. Open 4-compartment fasciotomy remains the gold standard for surgical management.
INDICATIONS: Operative intervention is indicated for patients with clinically and objectively confirmed CECS who fail to respond to conservative management. Contraindications include inadequate nonoperative treatment or unaddressed medical comorbidities. Proper diagnosis requires exclusion of vascular or neurologic causes that can mimic CECS symptoms.
TECHNIQUE DESCRIPTION: A 2-incis

BACKGROUND: The present study investigates the hypothesis that fasciotomy of the Hunter's canal increases the mobility of the superficial femoral artery and reduces the risk of stent fracture. The objective of this study was to compare the long-term success of drug-eluting nitinol stents with and without a fasciotomy for patients with total femoropopliteal occlusion. The hypothesis is that fasciotomy of Hunter's canal can increase the mobility of the superficial femoral artery and reduce the incidence of stent breakage. The objective of this study was to compare the long-term patency of drug-e

Cellulitis is a skin condition that affects both the dermis and the subcutaneous fat. Acute compartment syndrome has been associated with streptococcal infection. The present case highlights the role of physiotherapy in rehabilitating a patient suffering from compartment syndrome due to cellulitis. A 45-year-old female complained of swelling over the left forearm for five days. After being referred to the surgery department, she underwent clinical examinations, indicating cellulitis. As part of the surgical procedure, she had a fasciotomy and split skin grafting. Her pain was assessed using th

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous needle fasciotomy (PNF) is a non-invasive treatment option for finger flexion contractures caused by Dupuytren's disease. Variations in PNF techniques include the use of corticosteroid injection. In the presented randomised controlled trial, we compare the efficacy of PNF +/- corticosteroid injection in terms of reducing the recurrence rate.
METHODS: This study is performed as a two-armed, randomised controlled trial with a two-year follow-up. Patients will be allocated 1:1 to either PNF with corticosteroid injection (n = 200) or PNF with saline injection (n = 200).

UNLABELLED: Collagenase Clostridium histolyticum (CCH) injection and percutaneous needle fasciotomy (PNF) are minimally invasive procedures aiming to relieve Dupuytren disease (DD) by disrupting the cord and restoring the normal functionality of the hand. The purpose of this study is to compare the outcomes and recurrence rates for treatment of DD in the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints with either collagenase or percutaneous needle at 3-year follow-up. Moreover, we aim to determine the role of these therapeutic modalities and their impact on hand functionali

BACKGROUND: Military guidelines endorse early fasciotomy after revascularization of lower extremity injuries to prevent compartment syndrome, but the real-world impact is unknown. We assessed the association between fasciotomy and amputation and limb complications among lower extremitys with vascular injury.
METHODS: A retrospectively collected lower extremity injury database was queried for limbs undergoing attempted salvage with vascular procedure (2004-2012). Limbs were categorized as having undergone fasciotomy or not. Injury and treatment characteristics were collected, as were intervent
