Parental feeding practices and child weight status in Mexican American families: a longitudinal analysis.

BACKGROUND: Parental feeding practices are thought to influence children's weight status, through children's eating behavior and nutritional intake. However, because most studies have been cross-sectional, the direction of influence is unclear. Moreover, although obesity rates are high among Latino children, few studies of parental feeding practices have focused on this population. METHODS: This 2-year longitudinal study examined mutual influences over time between parental feeding practices and children's weight status, in Mexican American families with children 18 years old at baseline. Men matter: a cross-sectional exploration of the forgotten fathers of children born to adolescent mothers in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Fathers are intricately bound to the experience of adolescent mothers and their children. Yet, fathers of children born to adolescent mothers, particularly within the context of HIV, remain neglected in the literature. These exploratory analyses provide insight into the characteristics of fathers of children born to adolescent mothers affected by HIV in South Africa. SETTING: Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. DESIGN: Cross-sectional data from a prospective cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: Young mothers (10-24 years of age) and their children (0-68 months). All mothers completed de

Changes in dyadic emotional flexibility and expressivity during parent-child interactions following successful treatment of child anxiety.

Child anxiety is linked to emotions during parent-child interactions, and observing emotional flexibility and expressivity may reveal treatment-related changes. This observational study investigated whether changes in dyadic emotional flexibility and expressivity were associated with treatment non-response (responders vs. non-responders), and whether treatment modality (child vs. family cognitive behavior theory (CBT)) and parent gender (mother- vs. father-child dyads) affected these changes. Participants were 116 referred children with anxiety disorders (59.4% girls, Mage = 12.4 years, SD = 2

"Sit down and eat": Daily associations between preschoolers' physical activity at dinner and parents' feeding coparenting and control.

Although it is developmentally appropriate for preschoolers to be highly active, this physical activity level can be difficult for parents to manage at mealtime when children are asked to sit and focus on eating. We examined how children's physical activity levels across the week related to parents' feeding coparenting efforts and how parent feeding pressure and prompts to change the child's activity mediated these associations. From a sample of 100 families with a preschool-age child (3-5 years, 49% female, 59% White, 12% Black, 10% Hispanic, 26% low-income), home dinners with mothers and fat

Childhood leukemia and parents' occupational and home exposures.

A case-control study of children of ages 10 years and under in Los Angeles County was conducted to investigate the causes of leukemia. The mothers and fathers of acute leukemia cases and their individually matched controls were interviewed regarding specific occupational and home exposures as well as other potential risk factors associated with leukemia. Analysis of the information from the 123 matched pairs showed an increased risk of leukemia for children whose fathers had occupational exposure after the birth of the child to chlorinated solvents [odds ratio (OR) = 3.5, P = .01], spray paint

Development of prison-based parent-child joint intervention for incarcerated fathers: protocol for mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Paternal incarceration represents a significant stressor that disrupts family cohesion, undermines paternal identity and adversely affects children's psychosocial well-being. While family-focused programmes show promise in improving outcomes for incarcerated parents and their children, culturally attuned prison-based parenting interventions remain underdeveloped and scarce, particularly in Asian contexts. To address this gap, a local parenting intervention grounded in the Double ABCX model of family resilience, the 'Be My Hero' programme, was designed for incarcerated fathers in

Fathers' postnatal distress, parenting self-efficacy, later parenting behavior, and children's emotional-behavioral functioning: A longitudinal study.

Fathers' postnatal distress has been associated with subsequent emotional and behavioral problems for children; however, the mechanisms by which this occurs have received less attention. One potential pathway could be via the negative effects that father mental health problems and parenting self-efficacy (PSE) in the postnatal period have on later parenting behaviors. Using a nationally representative cohort of Australian father-child dyads (N = 3,741), the long-term relationships between fathers' psychological distress and PSE in the postnatal period, parenting behavior when children were age

Interpartner conflict and child abuse risk among African American and Latino adolescent parenting couples.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to identify links between observed conflict interactions and risk for child abuse and harsh parenting among a multiethnic sample of adolescent mothers (14-19 years) and young fathers (14-24 years). METHODS: Prior to childbirth (T1), observation-based relationship data were collected from 154 expectant adolescent couples as well as information about physical aggression between partners. Two years after childbirth (T2), data relevant to harsh disciplinary practices and child abuse-prone attitudes were collected from both young mothers and fathers. Multiple

Exploring Parent Beliefs and Behavior: The Contribution of ADHD Symptomology Within Mothers and Fathers.

OBJECTIVE: To use a multi-method approach to examine the association of parental ADHD and gender with observed and self-reported parenting beliefs and behaviors. METHOD: Seventy-nine mother-father dyads completed measures of child behavior and impairment, parenting beliefs and behaviors, and self- and partner ratings of ADHD symptoms and functional impairment. Forty-five parents also completed structured parent-child interactions. RESULTS: A hierarchical linear model suggests impairment in functional domains may be associated with negative emotions about parenting and less effective parentin

Treatment for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia: the fathers' perspective.

Research on parental adaptation to a child's chronic illness is still scant, and this is particularly so in relation to the experience of treatment for paediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL). The work that does exist on parental reactions tends to conflate maternal responses with paternal responses, as fathers are usually seen as having a secondary role. Consequently, little is known about how fathers cope with treatment for childhood ALL. The present discussion seeks to make a contribution to this area by presenting findings on the paternal experience of treatment for paediatric ALL f

The Effect of Breastfeeding Education provided to Fathers on Breastfeeding, Parent-Infant Bonding, and Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Levels.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding contributes to infants' growth and development while also supporting family cohesion and parental roles. In this context, involving fathers in breastfeeding education may promote the sustainability of breastfeeding and strengthen family-centered care through support of the mother-infant bond. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of breastfeeding education provided to both mothers and fathers in the early postnatal period on breastfeeding outcomes, parent-infant bonding, and breastfeeding self-efficacy levels in both parents. METHOD: This randomized controlle

Understanding the Roles of Context, Frequency, and Quantity of Alcohol Consumption in Child Physical Abuse: Risks for Mothers and Fathers.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use is related to child physical abuse, although little is known about gender-specific risks factors. This study examines the relationships between alcohol outlets, context-specific drinking, dose-response drinking and child physical abuse for mothers and fathers. METHOD: Telephone interviews were conducted with 1,973 female and 1,050 male respondents in 50 California cities. Weighted negative binomial models were used to calculate the frequency of physical abuse in the past year. RESULTS: Drinking more often at restaurants was related to higher frequency of physical ab

Paternal perinatal intimate partner violence victimization and child abuse.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal intimate partner violence (IPV) poses significant health risks for victims and their children. While maternal IPV victimization has been extensively studied, research on paternal IPV victimization remains limited. This study examines the prevalence of paternal perinatal IPV victimization and its association with child abuse and paternal psychological distress. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from 1248 postnatal fathers whose partners had given birth within 1 year in August 2021. IPV victimization was assessed across physical, psychological, economic, and sexual

A mediational model linking perceptions of security, alexithymia and behavior problems of sexually abused children.

BACKGROUND: Perceptions of security toward parents are related with internalized and externalized problems among victims of child sexual abuse (CSA). Alexithymia, which is difficulty in identifying and expressing feelings, is associated with the quality of parent-child relationships (Oskis et al., 2013) and behavior problems in children (Di Trani et al., 2013). OBJECTIVE: The current study tested the mediational role of alexithymia in the relationship between perceptions of security toward parents and behavior problems among CSA victims. The European study of assisted reproduction families: family functioning and child development.

Findings are presented of a European study (conducted in the UK, Italy, Spain and The Netherlands) of family relationships and the social and emotional development of children in families created as a result of the two most widely used reproductive technologies, in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and donor insemination (DI), in comparison with control groups of families with naturally conceived child and adoptive families. Mothers of children conceived by assisted reproduction expressed greater warmth towards their child, were more emotionally involved with their child, interacted more with their ch

Predictors of father involvement patterns among Latino fathers with low income.

Father involvement in parenting can promote children's positive development. Despite the growing literature on father involvement, little is known about the heterogeneity in father involvement among Latino fathers. The present study sought to examine father involvement patterns and their predictors among Latino fathers who were predominantly unmarried and had a low income. A latent profile analysis was conducted on a sample of 830 Latino fathers of toddlers in the Building Strong Families program. Three father involvement profiles were identified: high involvement (61.81%); high accessibility

The role of donor-recipient relationship in long-term outcomes of living donor renal transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Graft failure related to acute and chronic rejection remains an important problem in transplantation. An association has been reported between microchimerism and the development of tolerance. Since it has been established that cells of fetal origin can be found in maternal tissues long after parturition, and cells of maternal origin may persist for years in offspring, we hypothesized that this fetal-maternal microchimerism may confer tolerance and thus less graft loss for kidneys transplanted between mothers and their offspring. METHODS: We used data from the Scientific Registry o

[Invisible fathers: child development and family dynamics after heterologous insemination].

This study presents the long term outcome of the psychotherapy of a girl over seven years, which was born after donor insemination (DI) and aged eight became ill with a compulsive disorder. Aspects of child development, communication within the family and family dynamics related to this specific constellation are pointed out. This case-study presents one of the very few supplements to statistic data elaborated about assitsed-reproduction-families. Implications for individual therapy and therapeutic management of the family are discussed according to development of bonding and identity of the D
