The amygdala has been implicated in the mediation of emotional and species-specific social behavior (Kling et al., 1970; Kling and Brothers, 1992; Kluver and Bucy, 1939; Rosvold et al., 1954). Humans with bilateral amygdala damage are impaired in judging negative emotion in facial expressions and making accurate judgements of trustworthiness (Adolphs et al., 1998, 1994). Amygdala dysfunction has also been implicated in human disorders ranging from social anxiety (Birbaumer et al., 1998) to depression (Drevets, 2000) to autism (Bachevalier, 1994; Baron-Cohen et al., 2000; Bauman and Kemper, 199

Humans have an inherent need to belong to a social group, and ostracism can lead to significant personal costs. Therefore, the fear of negative evaluation by others, along with its associated consequence of social anxiety, appears to be evolutionarily adaptive. Numerous studies have demonstrated that social anxiety, as well as its clinical manifestation, social anxiety disorder (SAD), is not only linked to an intense fear of negative evaluation but also to a fear of positive evaluation. This phenomenon has been termed the Bivalent Fear of Evaluation (BFOE) model of social anxiety. While the fe

Microdiscectomy is one of the surgical methods for the treatment of herniated intervertebral disc in patients with low back pain. The aim of the research was to evaluate the presence of psychological and cognitive-behavioral factors, including anxiety, fears and fear-avoidance beliefs of physical activity and work and their correlation with the pain and functional disability in patients after lumbar microdiscectomy and subsequent physical therapy. The research was performed on 198 patients (95 men and 103 women), mean age 50.20±10.26 years. The following questionnaires were used in the study:

Sex differences in the neurobiological mechanisms involved in fear conditioning and extinction have been suggested to contribute to differential vulnerability for the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in women compared with men. Reproductive hormones, such as estradiol, have been shown to facilitate fear conditioning and extinction learning and may explain some of these differences. However, the effect of commonly used hormonal contraceptives on the neurobiological mechanisms of fear conditioning and extinction is poorly understood. A laboratory study was conducted in trauma-

Gestational and early life experiences affect subsequent behavioural and physical development. The objective of the current study was to investigate associations between gilts' fear of humans, gestational stress level, and feeding and maternal behaviour, as well as how these related to aspects of the personality and growth of their offspring. A total of 37 gilts were used. Four human approach tests were performed between d 104 and d 111 of gestation to classify gilts as fearful or friendly. Gilt feeding behaviour and salivary cortisol concentration was measured between d 90 and d 108 of gestat

Emotionally charged pictorial materials are frequently used in phobia research, but no existing standardized picture database is dedicated to the study of different phobias. The present work describes the results of two independent studies through which we sought to develop and validate this type of database-a Set of Fear Inducing Pictures (SFIP). In Study 1, 270 fear-relevant and 130 neutral stimuli were rated for fear, arousal, and valence by four groups of participants; small-animal (N = 34), blood/injection (N = 26), social-fearful (N = 35), and nonfearful participants (N = 22). The result

This study investigated an implicit measure of cognitive processing, the Implicit Association Test (IAT; A. G. Greenwald, D. E. McGhee, & J. L. K. Schwartz, 1998), as a measure of fear-related automatic associations. Sixty-seven students with snake or spider fears completed 4 IAT tasks in which they classified pictures of snakes and spiders along with descriptive words indicating valence, fear, danger, or disgust. Results indicated that all 4 tasks discriminated between fear groups in terms of their implicit associations, and fear-specific effects were significant even after controlling for th

BACKGROUND: Rigorously documented ictal fear is infrequent, and its anatomoclinical correlations remain poorly defined. We aim to determine its localizing value and provide novel evidence of the clinical importance and theoretical meaning about ictal fear and emotional processes in children.
METHODS: Of 1624 consecutive pediatric patients assessed, we identify seven with carefully defined and strict video-electroencephalography (EEG)-recorded ictal fear (130 seizures), two with additional intracerebral stereo-EEG and electrical brain stimulation examinations. A comprehensive study of EEG and

This study evaluated the extent to which a reduction in contextual fear contributes to the anxiolytic effect of benzodiazepines in the fear-potentiated startle response. To this end, chlordiazepoxide, an anxiolytic often used as positive control in preclinical drug studies, and zolpidem, known to have sedative properties and to be devoid of anxiolytic effects, were tested in two contexts: the same context as training had taken place and an alternative context. In addition, the level of muscle relaxation was assessed in a grip strength test. Chlordiazepoxide (2.5-10 mg/kg) decreased the fear-po

Individual differences in long-term stability of fear memories are of potential relevance for stable dispositions related to threat processing, such as neuroticism/anxiety and fearfulness. As previous research suggests a prominent role of dopamine for the retention of conditioned and extinguished fear, dopaminergic gene polymorphisms may also relate to individual differences in fear stability. While the COMT Val158Met polymorphism causes individual differences in prefrontal dopamine, its associations with human long-term fear extinction are currently unknown. Here, n = 30/29/28 healthy male Va

Fearful individuals often overestimate the relationship between fear-relevant stimuli and aversive consequences. Such fear-relevant illusory correlations (ICs) might be involved in the maintenance of anxiety disorders. In this literature review, we found clear evidence that ICs are present and enhanced in fear of animals. We also revealed some evidence for ICs related to fear of flying, social anxiety, contamination fear, panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder, but with considerably less clarity. Fear-relevant ICs seem to be best explained by both a priori expectancies and biased e

The time course of attentional biases for spider stimuli was assessed in two groups of individuals with high or low levels of spider fear. Pairs of photographs of spiders and cats were presented in a visual probe task with three exposure durations: 200, 500 and 2000 ms. Results indicated greater attentional bias for spider stimuli in high fear, than in low fear, individuals in the 200 ms condition. The attentional bias in the high fear group significantly reduced as stimulus exposure duration increased, with no significant biases found in the longer exposure conditions. Results support the vie

The shadow hypothesis regarding the impact of fear of sexual assault on fear of violent crime suggests that female fear of crime is characterized by concern about sexual assault as a contemporaneous victimization event during a violent crime event. Recent research has found that other types of crime, namely physical assault, may also be feared as a contemporaneous offense. We know of no research that has examined the unique impact of fear of murder versus fear of sexual assault on fear of violent crime. There is also a lack of research that explores how these two types of fear uniquely affect

The term dementia dates back to 50 BC, when Lucretius used it to mean "being out of one's mind." Over time, dementia has become synonymous with Alzheimer's disease (AD), characterized by impaired memory. In the late nineteenth century, Emil Kraepelin's description of dementia praecox-later reclassified as schizophrenia-often included end-stage confusion and memory loss, suggesting a clinical overlap with what is now recognized as AD. Kraepelin's contemporary, Alois Alzheimer, described "presenile dementia" in Auguste Deter, whose history of paranoia and progressive cognitive decline may repres

Extinction is the process by which the memory of a learned conditioned association decreases over time and with introduction of new associations. It is a vital part of fear learning, and it is critical to recovery in multiple fear-related disorders, including Specific and Social Phobias, Panic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The process of extinction is also the underlying mechanism for recovery in gold-standard therapies for PTSD, including prolonged exposure, cognitive processing therapy, eye movement desensitization and procession, as

Ictal fear is characterized by a subjective sensation of fear and consistent clinical manifestations during seizures. This phenomenon is rarely observed in parietal seizures. We report anatomical electroclinical correlations between an SEEG-recorded seizure and prominent fear semiology. The seizure onset zone was quantified using the Connectivity Epileptogenicity Index (cEI) method. Occurrence of fear during seizures was related to the involvement of the left inferior parietal cortex and the superior temporal gyrus without amygdala involvement. Our case confirms that parietal seizures can prod

Ketamine has been reported to be an efficacious antidepressant for major depressive disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder. Most recently, ketamine has also been shown to be prophylactic against stress-induced depressive-like behavior in mice. It remains unknown, however, when ketamine should be administered relative to a stressor in order to maximize its antidepressant and/or prophylactic effects. Moreover, it is unknown whether ketamine can be prophylactic against subsequent stressors. We systematically administered ketamine at different time points relative to a fear experience, in orde

Fear conditioning has been commonly used as a model of emotional learning in animals and, with the introduction of functional neuroimaging techniques, has proven useful in establishing the neurocircuitry of emotional learning in humans. Studies of fear acquisition suggest that regions such as amygdala, insula, anterior cingulate cortex, and hippocampus play an important role in acquisition of fear, whereas studies of fear extinction suggest that the amygdala is also crucial for safety learning. Extinction retention testing points to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex as an essential region in
