Furry and feathered family members--a critical review of their role in palliative care.

This article presents a comprehensive critical review of the peer-reviewed literature on palliative care and companion animals (CAs), reporting on the evidence and knowledge base regarding CAs and their role for people at end of life. PubMed, PsycINFO, Medline, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched for studies pertaining to CAs, end of life, and hospice palliative care. Six studies dealt specifically with empirical research. The remaining literature addressed the topic peripherally or anecdotally. The evidence for efficacy and the knowledge base about the role of CAs at end of life in hospi

Do birds of a feather move together? Group membership and behavioral synchrony.

The temporal coordination of interpersonal behavior is a foundation for effective joint action with synchronized movement moderating core components of person perception and social exchange. Questions remain, however, regarding the precise conditions under which interpersonal synchrony emerges. In particular, with whom do people reliably synchronize their movements? The current investigation explored the effects of arbitrary group membership (i.e., minimal groups) on the emergence of interpersonal coordination. Participants performed a repetitive rhythmic action together with a member of the s

Beak and feather dystrophy in wild sulphur-crested cockatoos (Cacatua galerita).

Three flocks of wild sulphur-crested cockatoos in southeastern Australia had a 10-20% prevalence of feather and beak deformities. In affected birds, the crest, tail, contour and down feathers were lost or reduced in length owing to a "pinching off" 0.5-1 cm above the skin. The underlying skin was discolored brown. Flight feathers appeared normal and could sustain flight. In mildly affected birds, only the crest and down feathers were involved. Histological examination of affected feathers showed necrosis of developing cells in their epidermal collars. The epidermis was moderately hyperplastic

Histoplasma capsulatum isolated from feather pillow associated with histoplasmosis in an infant.

Feathers from an old baby pillow yielded Histoplasma capsulatum in an epidemiologic study of histoplasmosis in an infant. Efforts to exclude other possible sources of infection, including blood donor and placental transmission, were exhaustive. Although histoplasmosis has long been associated with soils in avian habitats, the feather itself has not been implicated heretofore.

New insights into the chemical forms of extremely high methylmercury in songbird feathers from a contaminated site.

The chemical forms of mercury (Hg), particularly methylmercury (MeHg), in songbird feathers from an abandoned mining region were analyzed via X-ray absorption near-edge structure analysis (XANES). In feathers, proportions of MeHg as total mercury (75.6-100%) quantified by the XANES were directly comparable to the chemical extraction values (74.1-95.9%). Most of MeHg were bound with cysteine (Cys) and reduced glutathione (GSH), whereas inorganic mercury (IHg) was mainly bound with GSH. These results were consistent with those found in fish muscles and human hairs of both fish consumers and occu

Use of feathers of feral pigeons (Columba livia) as a technique for metal quantification and environmental monitoring.

This study quantifies metal concentrations in washed and unwashed feathers of feral pigeons (Columba livia). The material was collected in two different sites: Goiânia (capital of Goiás State), with high anthropic activities, and Jataí (a city in Goiás), with low anthropic activities. Results revealed that metals such as Pb, Cr, and Cd were deposited in the feathers originating from air and soil (exogenous process). Other metals such as Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn, which are part of the tissue constitution of a living being, were absorbed through the pigeons' diet (endogenous process). There was a stat

Mercury and other metals in eggs and feathers of glaucous-winged gulls (Larus glaucescens) in the Aleutians.

Levels of mercury and other contaminants should be lower in birds nesting on isolated oceanic islands and at high latitudes without any local or regional sources of contamination, compared to more urban and industrialized temperate regions. We examined concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead, manganese, mercury and selenium in the eggs, and the feathers of fledgling and adult glaucous-winged gulls (Larus glaucescens) nesting in breeding colonies on Adak, Amchitka, and Kiska Islands in the Aleutian Chain of Alaska in the Bering Sea/North Pacific. We tested the following null hypothes

Replication kinetics of Marek's disease vaccine virus in feathers and lymphoid tissues using PCR and virus isolation.

CVI988 (Rispens), an avirulent strain of Marek's disease virus, is the most widely used vaccine against Marek's disease. The kinetics of replication of CVI988 was examined in tissues of chickens vaccinated at either 1 day or 14 days of age and sampled regularly up to 28 days post-vaccination. Age at vaccination had no significant effect on the kinetics of CVI988 virus replication. During the cytolytic phase of infection (1-7 days), virus levels peaked in the spleen, bursa and thymus with very close correlation among these organs. Virus load in peripheral blood lagged behind and did not reach h

Heavy metal, organochlorine pesticide, and PCB residues in eggs and feathers of herons breeding in northern Italy.

We report on organochlorine pesticide and PCB concentrations in eggs of the little egret, Egretta garzetta, and the black-crowned night-heron, Nycticorax nycticorax, collected in 1993-1994, and on mercury, cadmium, and lead concentrations in feathers of 20-day-old nestlings collected from the same nests in 1994, from heronries near Pavia, northern Italy. Organochlorine pesticide and PCB residues were lower than those commonly associated with mortality and reduced reproductive success. As population levels of the species studied are not declining, these contaminants appear to have no significan

Feathered bioreactor: transforming a chicken egg into a recombinant protein biomanufacturing foundry.

The limitations of conventional small-molecule drugs in treating complex chronic and inherited disorders have driven demand for recombinant protein therapeutics offering superior target specificity and mechanistic precision. However, existing production platforms remain inadequate: bacterial systems lack post-translational processing machinery; yeast and insect systems produce non-human glycans; and mammalian cell-based systems, while biologically capable, require infrastructure that renders therapeutics inaccessible in resource-limited settings. This review examines the transgenic chicken egg

Feather RNA: A Non-Invasive Approach for Transcriptomic Profiling in Live Chickens.

In this study, an exploratory transcriptomic investigation was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of using feather transcriptomics to detect sex differences and gene responses to physiological changes in chickens. Feathers represent a promising non-invasive biological source of RNA, as the feather pulp of growing feathers contains living cells capable of active transcription. Growing feathers were collected from 150-day-old male and female chickens (Bionda Piemontese, a slow-growing breed) raised under a free-range system and fed two finisher diets differing in lipid content: low-lipid (LL,

Growth patterns and heat tolerance analysis of dwarf chicken with frizzled feather.

Chickens are covered with feathers, lack sweat glands, and are sensitive to the thermal environment. Previously, our group bred a novel dwarf chicken strain with frizzled feather, named as dwarf chicken with frizzled feather (DFC). The cumulative growth of the chicken body weight and size were analyzed with 3 mathematical models. Subsequently, chickens were grouped to investigate the impact of heat stress (HS) on their slaughter performance, histomorphological development and gene mRNA change (HSP70, muscle development and appetite-related factors) using quantitative real-time PCR, tissue sect

Cloacal feather trimming improves reproductive performance of layer breeder roosters.

Brazil is among the world's leading egg producers and currently has 1.4 million-layer breeders. Although genetic selection has improved reproductive traits more significantly in layer breeders than in their broiler congeners, aging is still an element that greatly affects fertility and hatch rate. Therefore, strategies to minimize age-related losses are crucial in the routine of layer breeder farms. Here, we assessed the effects of cloacal feather trimming (CFT) on reproductive parameters of a commercial-flock performing natural mating. To this end, a parent-stock house accommodating 11,238 he

Keratin nanoparticles derived from feather waste for novel antibacterial delivery.

The global rise of bacterial resistance demands innovative strategies to enhance antibiotic efficacy. This study investigates keratin nanoparticles (KNPs) derived from waste chicken feathers as sustainable drug carriers. Antibacterial activity of KNPs was evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli using antibacterial sensitivity assays, including disc diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration tests, while cytotoxicity was evaluated on human lymphoma cells. KNPs exhibited excellent biocompatibility, showing no cytotoxic effects on human cells or bacteria. Penicillin and v

Phylogenomics and host-switching patterns of Philopteridae (Psocodea: Phthiraptera) feather lice.

Philopteridae feather lice are a group of ectoparasitic insects which have intimate relationships with their avian hosts. Feather lice include an enormous number of described species; however, the relationships of major lineages have been clouded by homoplasious characters due to convergent evolution. In this study, a comprehensive phylogenomic analysis of the group is performed which includes 137 feather louse species. Several other analyses are also completed including dating analysis, cophylogenetic reconstructions, and ancestral character estimation to understand the evolution of complex m

Melanosome evolution indicates a key physiological shift within feathered dinosaurs.

Inference of colour patterning in extinct dinosaurs has been based on the relationship between the morphology of melanin-containing organelles (melanosomes) and colour in extant bird feathers. When this relationship evolved relative to the origin of feathers and other novel integumentary structures, such as hair and filamentous body covering in extinct archosaurs, has not been evaluated. Here we sample melanosomes from the integument of 181 extant amniote taxa and 13 lizard, turtle, dinosaur and pterosaur fossils from the Upper-Jurassic and Lower-Cretaceous of China. We find that in the lineag

Shake a tail feather: the evolution of the theropod tail into a stiff aerodynamic surface.

Theropod dinosaurs show striking morphological and functional tail variation; e.g., a long, robust, basal theropod tail used for counterbalance, or a short, modern avian tail used as an aerodynamic surface. We used a quantitative morphological and functional analysis to reconstruct intervertebral joint stiffness in the tail along the theropod lineage to extant birds. This provides new details of the tail's morphological transformation, and for the first time quantitatively evaluates its biomechanical consequences. We observe that both dorsoventral and lateral joint stiffness decreased along th

Latent turkey herpesvirus infection in lymphoid, nervous, and feather tissues of chickens.

In earlier studies, we found that a late gene product, glycoprotein B (gB) was highly expressed in lymphoid tissues of chickens inoculated with turkey herpesvirus (HVT). The objectives of the present study were twofold. First, we wanted to expand on our previous research and determine if gB expression declines or disappears during later time periods of HVT infection. Second, we wanted to correlate gB expression with presence of HVT, i.e. if gB expression is absent, can HVT still be detected? Fifteen 1-day-old chicks were inoculated by intraperitoneal inoculation with 2000 plaque forming units
