AI-driven adaptive feedback and EFL writing performance: The roles of engagement, metacognition, and epistemic agency in a cross-linguistic context.

This study investigates the role of AI-driven adaptive feedback systems in enhancing feedback engagement, metacognitive strategies, epistemic agency, and writing performance among Saudi EFL learners. Adopting a cross-linguistic perspective, this study examined the impact of feedback provided in both Arabic (L1) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. A quantitative predictive research design was employed utilising Structural Equation Modelling to test the hypothesised relationships among the study variables. The sample comprised 1049 Saudi university EFL learners from various institu

Social anxiety and the ironic effects of positive interviewer feedback.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Positive interviewer feedback should encourage positive experiences and outcomes for interviewees. Yet, positive feedback is inconsistent with socially anxious interviewees' negative self-views. Socially anxious interviewees might experience increased self-focus while attempting to reconcile the inconsistency between their self-perceptions and that feedback. This could interfere with successful interview performance. DESIGN: This study used a 3 (feedback: positive, negative, no) × 2 (social anxiety: high, low) between-subjects design. METHOD: Undergraduate students

Wearable real-time and adaptive feedback device to face the stuttering: a knowledge-based telehealthcare proposal.

Despite first written references to permanent developmental stuttering occurred more than 2500 years ago, the mechanisms underlying this disorder are still unknown. This paper briefly reviews stuttering causal hypothesis and treatments, and presents the requirements that a new stuttering therapeutic device should verify. As a result of the analysis, an adaptive altered auditory feedback device based on a multimodal intelligent monitor, within the framework of a knowledge-based telehealthcare system, is presented. The subsequent discussion, based partly on the successful outcomes of a similar i

Development of the Rational Thinking, Emotion Regulation, and Problem-Solving Mental Fitness Mobile App for US Navy Sailors: Qualitative and Quantitative Usability Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: US Navy sailors experience a range of personal and interpersonal stressors due to challenging operational tempos that can contribute to psychological distress and increased suicide risk. Digital mental fitness tools offer scalable, stigma-reducing solutions to support psychological readiness. However, many existing digital mental health interventions use top-down designs that lack input from the target population and focus on treating psychological symptoms rather than improving overall mental fitness. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to design a mobile app version of the Rational Thin

Feedback is associated with higher subjective values of n-Back levels in effort discounting.

Exerting cognitive effort is essential for successful engagement in demanding tasks, yet individuals differ in how they perceive and value such effort. Two key personality traits - Need for Cognition (NFC) and Willpower Beliefs - have been associated with cognitive motivation and persistence. While Subjective Values (SVs) provide a measure of willingness to exert cognitive effort, the role of task-related feedback in modulating SVs has remained underexplored. In the present study, N = 251 participants completed an online experiment including an n-Back task, the Cognitive Affective Discounting

Self-esteem modulates directed forgetting of emotional social feedback.

BACKGROUND: According to self-motivation theories and the mnemic neglect mechanism, differences in self-esteem levels lead to memory bias for social feedback of different valences, and may enable self-esteem to moderate individuals' directed forgetting of social feedback. However, this hypothesis has not been tested in previous studies. To address this, the present study employed two behavioral experiments to examine the moderating effect of self-esteem on directed forgetting of social feedback. METHODS: In Experiment 1, a directed forgetting paradigm involving valenced (positive or negative)

Adolescents report being most motivated by encouragement from people who know their abilities and the domain.

Students often receive encouragement but do not always find it motivating. Whose encouragement motivates students and what cognitive mechanisms underlie this process? We propose that students' responses to positive feedback (e.g., encouragement) hinge on mental state representations, specifically what the speaker knows. Across three studies, we find that U.S. adolescents (n = 581-759 11- to 19-year-olds per study, preregistered; > 80% racial/ethnic minorities; > 36% low income) report being more motivated by, more confident in, and more likely to seek out encouragement from hypothetical and re

Dorsomedial frontal cortex damage impairs error-based, but not reinforcement-based motor learning in humans.

We adapt our movements to new and changing environments through multiple processes. Sensory error-based learning counteracts environmental perturbations that affect the sensory consequences of movements. Sensory errors also cause the upregulation of reflexes and muscle co-contraction. Reinforcement-based learning enhances the selection of movements that produce rewarding outcomes. Although some findings have identified dissociable neural substrates of sensory error- and reinforcement-based learning, correlative methods have implicated dorsomedial frontal cortex in both. Here, we tested the cau

Sex differences on the response to others' gains and losses under cooperation and competition.

Although previous studies have shown that task performance is affected by others' presence and (the consequences of) others' actions, it is unclear how task performance varies in different social situations and the role that sex plays in it. In the present study, we investigated sex differences in the evaluation processing of another person's outcomes in both cooperative and competitive contexts. We recorded the event-related potentials (ERPs) of 72 normal adults who played a gambling task with a partner or against an opponent. The behavioral results indicate that males take longer to make dec

The effects of acute tryptophan depletion on brain activation during cognition and emotional processing in healthy volunteers.

Acute tryptophan depletion (ATD), a method to temporarily lower central serotonin levels, has been used to study the functioning of the serotonergic system. Relatively recent studies that examined the effects of ATD on brain activation associated with cognitive and emotional processing in healthy volunteers are reviewed. An overview of the findings in healthy volunteers is important for the interpretation of the effect of ATD on brain activation in patients with an affective disorder, such as major depression. These studies show that during response control and negative feedback processing ATD

Persecutory delusions: a cybernetic model.

The authors propose a cybernetic model for the formation and maintenance of persecutory delusions. During the formation of persecutory ideation, the threat of loss of control over the self or others interacts with predictions of control from others. This interaction may result in feelings of alien control followed by persecutory explanations. Since the persecutory explanations provide the individual with a new goal of resisting others' influence in order to prevent being controlled, they reduce the threat of loss of self-control. This is how persecutory delusions are maintained.

Design and impact of systems for artificial sensory feedback in lower-limb prostheses.

INTRODUCTION: The loss of motor function due to lower limb amputation may be compensated by a prosthetic leg. To improve their functionality, systems for artificial sensory feedback have been proposed, but have yet to reach widespread clinical use. This review aims to provide an overview of the design and impact of such systems. AREAS COVERED: Based on a systematic literature search in the Pubmed and Embase databases (21 September 2025), we analyzed 63 studies proposing a total of 81 feedback systems. When categorized according to the feedback variable, pre-processing techniques (discretizati

Vibrotactile Feedback Strategies for Trunk-Stabilizing Exercises in a Home-Based Scenario: Qualitative Interview Study Among Physiotherapists.

BACKGROUND: Physiotherapy treatments frequently incorporate a combination of hands-on, therapist-led exercises and hands-off, home-based exercises, whereby patients perform exercises independently. A key challenge in home-based rehabilitation is providing patients with effective feedback to guide their movements. A range of strategies is being reviewed to address this issue and a starting point for developing effective and implementable strategies to gather feedback requirements from the end users is also being considered. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to derive requirements for designing a vibr

A metaethnography of traumatic childbirth and its aftermath: amplifying causal looping.

Integrating results from multiple analytic approaches used in a research program by the same researcher is a type of metasynthesis that has not often been reported in the literature. In this article the findings of one type of qualitative synthesis approach, a metaethnography, of six qualitative studies on birth trauma and its resulting posttraumatic stress disorder from my program of research are presented. This metaethnography provides a wide-angle lens to view and interpret the far-reaching, stinging tentacles of this often invisible phenomenon that new mothers experience. I used Noblit and

Conundrums and paradoxes in the pre-death grief experiences of dementia caregivers: A causal loop analysis.

This study examined how caregiver-environment interactions generate pre-death grief experiences in dementia caregiving. While traditionally conceptualized as an individual psychological response, grief may develop through dynamic feedback processes between caregivers and their social contexts. We used causal loop diagramming to map these dynamics. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 33 dementia caregivers in Singapore to explore their interactions across multiple social domains. Using purposive text analysis, we created a causal loop diagram showing feedback patterns that either dee

Training medical students as peer simulated patients in undergraduate medical education: a narrative review and implementation framework.

Standardized patients (SPs) are a core modality in undergraduate medical education for teaching and assessing communication, history-taking, and clinical reasoning through simulated encounters and objective structured clinical examinations. Yet, scaling SP provision can be limited by financial cost, the availability of trained actors, and the faculty workload required for recruitment, training, and quality assurance (QA). A peer simulated patient (PSP) model, also described as "students as patients" or student standardized-patients model, trains senior medical students to portray SPs roles for
