Modeling Rapid Contextual Learning in the Visual Cortex with Fast-Weight Deep Autoencoder Networks.

Recent neurophysiological studies have revealed that the early visual cortex can rapidly learn global image context, as evidenced by a sparsification of population responses and a reduction in mean activity when exposed to familiar versus novel image contexts. This phenomenon has been attributed primarily to local recurrent interactions, rather than changes in feedforward or feedback pathways-supported by both empirical findings and circuit-level modeling. Recurrent neural circuits capable of simulating these effects have been shown to reshape the geometry of neural manifolds, enhancing robust

Optimized primer and model improve precision of X chromosome telomere length determination in the Han population.

The attrition of telomere length is associated with cellular aging and plays a role in multiple age-related disorders. This study analyzed the relationship between telomere length on the X chromosome and age in the Han population (n = 492) using whole-genome sequencing and long-read sequencing data from 32 individuals. We developed three pairs of primers and completed measurements in a cohort of 124 individuals. We then constructed an online prediction tool based on a three-layer feedforward neural network and validated its performance in an independent cohort of 41 individuals. Our results re

A computational method to differentiate rheumatoid arthritis patients using thermography data.

BACKGROUND: The traditional rheumatoid arthritis (RA) diagnosis is very complicated because it uses many clinical and image data. Therefore, there is a need to develop a new method for diagnosing RA using a consolidated set of blood analysis and thermography data. OBJECTIVE: The following issues related to RA are discussed: 1) Which clinical data are significant in the primary diagnosis of RA? 2) What parameters from thermograms should be used to differentiate patients with RA from the healthy? 3) Can artificial neural networks (ANN) differentiate patients with RA from the healthy? METHODS:

Breast cancer risk estimation with artificial neural networks revisited: discrimination and calibration.

BACKGROUND: Discriminating malignant breast lesions from benign ones and accurately predicting the risk of breast cancer for individual patients are crucial to successful clinical decisions. In the past, several artificial neural network (ANN) models have been developed for breast cancer-risk prediction. All studies have reported discrimination performance, but not one has assessed calibration, which is an equivalently important measure for accurate risk prediction. In this study, the authors have evaluated whether an artificial neural network (ANN) trained on a large prospectively collected d

Using Machine Learning for the Automated Segmentation and Detection of Swallows Obtained by Digital Cervical Auscultation in Preterm Neonates.

The clinical application of acoustic swallowing sound parameters collected from digital cervical auscultation is limited because of the time-consuming manual segmentation required by trained experts. The automated identification of swallowing sounds in children and adults from swallowing sound audio wavefiles using machine learning have accuracies between 76-95%. No data exists in preterm neonates. To determine if applying automated machine learning using a transfer learning approach could accurately identify and segment swallows from swallowing sounds collected in preterm neonates. Thin fluid

Machine learning for intraoperative prediction of viability in ischemic small intestine.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of intestinal viability is essential in surgical decision-making in patients with acute intestinal ischemia. There has been no substantial change in the mortality rate (30%-93%) of patients with acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) since the 1980s. As the accuracy from the first laparotomy alone is 50%, the gold standard is a second-look laparotomy, increasing the accuracy to 87%-89%. This study investigates the use of machine learning to classify intestinal viability and histological grading in pig jejunum, based on multivariate time-series of bioimpedance sensor data. APPRO

Changes in brain activity following intensive voice treatment in children with cerebral palsy.

Eight children (3 females; 8-16 years) with motor speech disorders secondary to cerebral palsy underwent 4 weeks of an intensive neuroplasticity-principled voice treatment protocol, LSVT LOUD® , followed by a structured 12-week maintenance program. Children were asked to overtly produce phonation (ah) at conversational loudness, cued-phonation at perceived twice-conversational loudness, a series of single words, and a prosodic imitation task while being scanned using fMRI, immediately pre- and post-treatment and 12 weeks following a maintenance program. Eight age- and sex-matched controls were

Cortical PV interneurons regulate loudness perception and sustainably reverse loudness hypersensitivity.

Parvalbumin-expressing inhibitory neurons (PVNs) stabilize cortical network activity, generate gamma rhythms, and regulate experience-dependent plasticity. We found that PVNs act like a volume knob in the mouse auditory cortex (ACtx), bi-directionally adjusting neural and perceptual sensitivity to sound level over a 20 dB range. PVN-based gain adjustments were "sticky," such that a single bout of PVN activation at 40 Hz-but not at 1 or 70 Hz-sustainably dampened ACtx sound responsiveness, enhanced feedforward inhibition, and behaviorally desensitized mice to loudness. We then developed a mouse

Cortical determinants of loudness perception and auditory hypersensitivity.

Parvalbumin-expressing inhibitory neurons (PVNs) stabilize cortical network activity, generate gamma rhythms, and regulate experience-dependent plasticity. Here, we observed that activation or inactivation of PVNs functioned like a volume knob in the mouse auditory cortex (ACtx), turning neural and behavioral classification of sound level up or down over a 20dB range. PVN loudness adjustments were "sticky", such that a single bout of 40Hz PVN stimulation sustainably suppressed ACtx sound responsiveness, potentiated feedforward inhibition, and behaviorally desensitized mice to loudness. Nonlinear dynamics of a corticothalamic coupled neural mass model reproduce the mechanism of 40 Hz ASSR generation.

Auditory steady-state responses (ASSR) provide a powerful tool for investigating oscillatory dynamics and network synchronization along the auditory pathway. However, existing neural mass models of 40 Hz ASSR have largely focused on cortical microcircuits or macroscopic phenomenology, while neglecting the closed-loop regulation formed by thalamocortical feedforward transmission and thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN)-mediated feedback inhibition. To address this, we constructed an Auditory Corticothalamic Neural Mass Model (ACT-NMM) that investigates cortical pyramidal neurons (Pyr), parvalbumin-

MZI-switched dual-input SOI-AWG interrogator for neural-network-assisted FBG interrogation.

A dual-input silicon-on-insulator (SOI) arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) fiber Bragg grating (FBG) interrogator, enabled by an on-chip Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) switch, is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The device integrates a polarization beam splitter (PBS), a thermo-optic MZI, and an asymmetric dual-input AWG. The MZI enables on-chip selection of two AWG input ports, generating complementary spectral responses without increasing the number of output channels. Due to fabrication-induced non-idealities in SOI-AWG responses, conventional fitting-based interrogation methods su

Automated detection of z-axis coverage with abdomen-pelvis computed tomography examinations.

Excessive cephalocaudal anatomic (Z-axis) coverage can lead to unnecessary radiation exposure to a patient. In this study, an automated computing model was developed for identifying instances of potentially excessive Z-axis coverage with abdomen-pelvis examinations. Eight patient and imaging attributes including patient gender, age, height, weight, volume CT dose index (CTDIvol), dose length product (DLP), maximum abdomen width, and maximum abdomen thickness were used to build a feedforward neural network model to predict a target Z-axis coverage whether it is an excessive or non-excessive Z-a

Leveraging a Deep Learning Model and Computational Screening for the Discovery of ABCG2 Inhibitors against Drug-Resistant Breast Cancer.

Multidrug resistance (MDR) mediated by ATP-binding cassette transporter G2 (ABCG2) remains a major clinical challenge in breast cancer chemotherapy, primarily due to its role in reducing intracellular adriamycin (ADR) concentrations. To address this challenge, we developed an integrated computational strategy for the rapid identification of potent ABCG2 inhibitors capable of reversing ADR resistance. We first established the Prediction of Protein-Ligand's pKd (PPLK), a specialized deep learning model that employs multimodal sequence-ligand representations and feedforward neural networks to acc

Evaluating apoptotic biomarkers with endometrial histopathological changes in women with abnormal uterine bleeding.

AIM: Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is a common clinical challenge faced by women, often indicating underlying gynecological disorders, including endometrial pathologies. The evaluation of apoptotic biomarkers has gained attention as a potential method to elucidate the mechanisms driving these pathologies. AUB lacks precise diagnostic tools, with an insufficient understanding of apoptotic biomarkers' roles in endometrial changes, hindering effective management and targeted therapies for affected women. METHODS: The objectives are to identify apoptotic biomarkers associated with endometrial h

Differential involvement of feedback and feedforward control networks across disfluency types in adults who stutter: Evidence from resting state functional connectivity.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the relationship between different disfluency types (i.e., repetitions, prolongations, and blocks) and resting state functional connectivity in the feedback (FB) and feedforward (FF) control networks in 20 adults who stutter. METHODS: Frequency of each disfluency type was coded in speech samples derived from the Stuttering Severity Instrument, and functional connectivity between brain regions of interest was derived from resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging scans. We used LASSO regressions to identify the connections that most strongly predicted

Novel interneuronal network in the mouse posterior piriform cortex.

The neural circuits of the piriform cortex mediate field potential oscillations and complex functions related to integrating odor cues with behavior, affective states, and multisensory processing. Previous anatomical studies have established major neural pathways linking the piriform cortex to other cortical and subcortical regions and major glutamatergic and GABAergic neuronal subtypes within the piriform circuits. However, the quantitative properties of diverse piriform interneurons are unknown. Using quantitative neural anatomical analysis and electrophysiological recording applied to a GAD

The macaque IT cortex but not current artificial vision networks encode object position in perceptually aligned coordinates.

Efficient interaction with the visual world requires not only object identification but also localization of where objects are in space. While spatial ("where") processing has classically been attributed to dorsal stream pathways, recent work has shown that object position can also be decoded from ventral stream responses, including the inferior temporal (IT) cortex. However, because object position in these paradigms is coupled to pixel-based location, it has remained unclear whether ventral stream position signals are perceptually meaningful or instead reflect incidental inheritance from ret
