Descriptive Longitudinal Pilot Study: Behaviors Surrounding Feeding of Preterm Infants Who Received Extended Tube Feedings.

PURPOSE: Seventy percent of preterm infants experience challenges with oral feeding and commonly require tube feedings. Yet it is not well understood how these behaviors change over time while infants are receiving tube feedings only and through the transition to oral feedings. The purpose of this pilot study was to describe the change in behaviors surrounding feeding and with respect to advancing Post Menstrual Age (PMA) for preterm infants who received extended tube feedings during hospitalization in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). METHODS AND MEASURES: A prospective pilot study wa

"Starve a fever and feed a cold": feeding and anorexia may be adaptive behavioral modulators of autonomic and T helper balance.

Anorexia is a common symptom accompanying infections, but the teleology of the phenomenon remains unexplained. We hypothesize that anorexia may represent a prehistoric behavioral adaptation to fight infection by maintaining T helper (Th)2 bias, which is particularly vital in fighting bacterial pathogens. Specifically, we propose that anorexia may avert the reduction of Th2/Th1 ratio by preventing feeding-induced neurohormonal and vagal output from the gut. Emerging evidence suggests that the vagal and neurohormonal output of the gut during feeding promotes Th1 function, which is desirable in f

Relationships among feeding method, maternal behavior during feeding, and mother-infant bonding at 1 year postpartum: the Japan Environment and Children's Study.

We investigated how feeding methods and maternal behaviors during feeding influence mother-infant bonding at 1 year postpartum using data from 80,394 mother-child pairs in the Japan Environment and Children's Study. Bonding, feeding methods, maternal behaviors during feeding, and covariates were obtained from questionnaires and medical records. Modified Poisson regression estimated associations between feeding-related factors and bonding outcomes. At 1 year postpartum, 11.0% (n = 8,822) of mothers showed poor bonding. Mothers who talked to and looked at their child during feeding had a lower r

Feeding low-quality date leaves as a substitute to conventional forages in dairy cows diet: effects on digestibility, feeding behavior, milk yield, and feed efficiency.

This study investigated the possibility of integrating date leaves (DL) as a partial or complete substitute for conventional forage fibre sources into the diet of dairy cows. Nine Holstein cows were assigned to a replicated 3×3 Latin square design, and offered 1 of the 3 diets containing no DL (DL-0), or finely chopped DL partially (50%, DL-50) or completely (100%, DL-100) substituted for lucerne hay and maize silage. The replacement of the forages by DL was established such that the forage NDF (24.5%) was similar across diet despite the decreased forage: concentrate ratio from 0.45:0.55 to 0.

Self-Injurious Behavior During Treatment of Pediatric Feeding Disorder: An Evaluation of Treatment Outcomes.

Children with pediatric feeding disorder often engage in inappropriate mealtime behavior (e.g., pushing the utensil away) that can interfere with food or liquid consumption. Researchers have found that some children with pediatric feeding disorder may also engage in self-injurious behavior (SIB; e.g., self-biting, self-hitting) during meals. Behavior-analytic interventions are the most empirically supported interventions for children with pediatric feeding disorder; however, less is known about treatment outcomes for children who engage in SIB during meals. In the current study, we compared tr

Control of feeding behavior by modified retrograde AAV to the gastrointestinal tract nerve afferents.

Vagal afferents originating in the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract convey critical satiety signals but have remained challenging to target with precision. Here, we exploited a modified retrograde AAV2/rh10 vector delivered to the gastric wall to selectively transduce stomach-innervating nodose ganglion neurons and express the excitatory DREADD receptor hM3Dq. Chemogenetic activation of these afferents in mice acutely suppressed food intake by over 50% and induced robust c-Fos expression in neurons of the nucleus tractus solitarius and ventromedial (VMH) and arcuate nuclei of the hypothalamus

Nutritional status, feeding behavior, and oral conditions in preschool children exposed to secondhand smoke.

This study evaluated whether the nutritional status of preschoolers is influenced by secondhand smoke. Pairs of mothers-children (N = 201) were allocated in "children exposed to secondhand smoke (ESHS)" or "not exposed (N_ESHS)." Mothers answered, "The Parental Feeding Style Questionnaire (PFSQ)." The nutritional status and oral conditions were evaluated using WHO criteria. ESHS was 3.5 more likely to have a high BMI and their mothers had 10 kg more than N_ESHS. The probability of having dental caries was 2.28 and 3.68 times greater when the mother's BMI increases and when family/mothers were

Performance and feeding behavior of Holstein and Holstein × Gyr crossbred heifers grazing temperate forages.

This study aimed to investigate the difference between Holstein and Holstein × Gyr breeds on feeding behavior and performance of heifers grazing temperate pasture. The experiment was carried out in 89 days, split into 14 days of adaptation, and 3 periods of 25 days. Two treatments were used: Holstein (HOL; n = 7) and Holstein × Gyr (HG; n = 7). Heifers grazed a consortium of ryegrass and bristle oats and were supplemented individually daily with cornmeal at 0.33% of body weight plus 5 kg/day of corn silage. For 3 consecutive days, feeding behavior was observed for individual animals from direc

Dengue virus infection modifies mosquito blood-feeding behavior to increase transmission to the host.

Mosquito blood-feeding behavior is a key determinant of the epidemiology of dengue viruses (DENV), the most-prevalent mosquito-borne viruses. However, despite its importance, how DENV infection influences mosquito blood-feeding and, consequently, transmission remains unclear. Here, we developed a high-resolution, video-based assay to observe the blood-feeding behavior of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes on mice. We then applied multivariate analysis on the high-throughput, unbiased data generated from the assay to ordinate behavioral parameters into complex behaviors. We showed that DENV infection inc

CNS β3-adrenergic receptor activation regulates feeding behavior, white fat browning, and body weight.

Pharmacological β3-adrenergic receptor (β3AR) activation leads to increased mitochondrial biogenesis and activity in white adipose tissue (WAT), a process commonly referred to as "browning", and transiently increased insulin release. These effects are associated with improved metabolic function and weight loss. It is assumed that this impact of β3AR agonists is mediated solely through activation of β3ARs in adipose tissue. However, β3ARs are also found in the brain, in areas such as the brain stem and the hypothalamus, which provide multisynaptic innervation to brown and white adipose depots.

Seasonal blood-feeding behavior of Culex tarsalis (Diptera: Culicidae) in Weld County, Colorado, 2007.

Studies on Culex tarsalis Coquillett in Colorado have shown marked seasonal variation in the proportion of blood meals from birds and mammals. However, limitations in the specificity of antibodies used in the precipitin test and lack of vertebrate host availability data warrant revisiting Cx. tarsalis blood feeding behavior in the context of West Nile virus (WNV) transmission. We characterized the host preference of Cx. tarsalis during peak WNV transmission season in eastern Colorado and estimated the relative contribution of different avian species to WNV transmission. Cx. tarsalis preferred

Circulating ghrelin concentrations fluctuate relative to nutritional status and influence feeding behavior in cattle.

The objective of these experiments was to establish the relationship of plasma ghrelin concentrations with feed intake and hormones indicative of nutritional state of cattle. In Exp.1, 4 steers (BW 450 +/- 14.3 kg) were used in a crossover design to compare plasma ghrelin concentrations of feed-deprived steers with those of steers allowed to consume feed and to establish the relationship of plasma ghrelin concentrations with those of GH, insulin (INS), glucose (GLU), and NEFA. After adaptation to a once-daily feed offering (0800), 2 steers continued the once-daily feeding schedule (FED), where

Effects of amylin and salmon calcitonin on feeding and drinking behavior in pygmy goats.

In the present study, the effects of peripherally administered amylin and of the amylin-related peptide salmon calcitonin (sCT) on food and water intake was tested for the first time in pygmy goats. In the first series of experiments, the effect of amylin on food (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 microg/kg b.wt.) and water (2.0 microg/kg) intake was tested. In the second series of experiments, the effect of sCT on food intake (1.0 microg/kg) was tested under ad libitum feeding conditions or after 14 h food deprivation. The relationship of dose on the effect of sCT (0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 microg/kg) on food and wate

Chemical plasticity of visual cortical neurons in integrative organization of feeding behavior in cats.

The P.K. Anokhin conception of organization of systemic behavior was used to study the discharge activity and chemical plasticity of cortical neurons in a goal-directed behavior. Chemical sensitivity of neurons in the visual cortex of instrumentally conditioned cats was studied during successive stages of food procuring and consuming. The results showed that definite stages of this integrated behavioral act are characterized by differences in the chemical sensitivity of visual neurons to neurotransmitters. The largest number of neurons resistant to neurotransmitters was found among cells that

Feeding behavior in mammals: corticobulbar projection is reorganized during conversion from sucking to chewing.

It is known that repetitive stimulation of the frontal cortex (cortical masticatory area, CMA) induces rhythmical jaw movements similar to chewing in adult mammals. In the present study we were able to induce rhythmical jaw movements similar to sucking by repetitive stimulation of the frontal cortex in neonatal guinea pigs. This area, which we named the cortical sucking area (CSA), was located rostral to the CMA which was later formed upon maturation. Neurons of the CSA were shown electrophysiologically and morphologically to project primarily to the dorsal part of the paragigantocellular reti

Neurosecretory protein GL stimulates feeding behavior and fat accumulation in Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica).

Neurosecretory protein GL (NPGL) is a novel hypothalamic neuropeptide that promotes fat accumulation in rats, mice, and neonatal chicks. However, its role in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of chronic intracerebroventricular infusion of NPGL on body mass, food intake, and fat deposition in five-week-old male Japanese quails. A 13-day infusion of NPGL significantly increased body mass, food intake, and the masses of subcutaneous fat, abdominal fat, and liver. In contrast, water intake and the masses of the pancreas, testes, heart, a

Dynamics of glia and neurons regulate homeostatic rest, sleep and feeding behavior in Drosophila.

Homeostatic processes, including sleep, are critical for brain function. Here we identify astrocyte-like glia (or astrocytes, AL) and ensheathing glia (EG), the two major classes of glia that arborize inside the brain, as brain-wide, locally acting homeostats for the short, naturally occurring rest and sleep bouts of Drosophila, and show that a subset of neurons in the fan-shaped body encodes feeding homeostasis. We show that the metabolic gas carbon dioxide, changes in pH and behavioral activity all induce long-lasting calcium responses in EG and AL, and that calcium levels in both glia types

Effects of healthy aging on tongue-jaw kinematics during feeding behavior in rhesus macaques.

Several age-related oral health problems have been associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD), yet how oromotor dysfunction in healthy aging differ from those found in pathological aging is still unknown. This is partly because changes in the cortical and biomechanical ("neuromechanical") control of oromotor behavior in healthy aging are poorly understood. To this end, we investigated the natural feeding behavior of young and aged rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) to understand the age-related differences in tongue and jaw kinematics. We tracked tongue and jaw m
