Community health nurses' concerns about infant regulatory problems are predictive of mental disorders diagnosed at hospital: a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Regulatory problems of eating, sleeping, and crying in infancy may index mental health vulnerability in older ages, and knowledge is needed to inform strategies to break the developmental trajectories of dysregulation in early childhood. In this study, we examined the prospective associations between infant regulatory problems at the age of 8-10 months identified by community health nurses (CHN) and mental disorders diagnosed in hospital settings in children aged 1-8 years. METHODS: From a cohort of all newborn children in 15 municipalities in the Capital Region of Copenhagen (N

Correlates of parental feeding practices with pre-schoolers: Parental body image and eating knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours.

Parental feeding practices have been linked to eating and weight status in young children; however, more research is needed to understand what influences these feeding practices. The aim of this study was to examine how parental feeding practices that are linked to unhealthy eating patterns in young children, are related to parental body image and eating knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours . Participants were 330 mothers of a 2- to 6-year-old child. Mothers completed measures of knowledge of child body image and eating patterns, overvaluation of weight and shape, internalization of general me

Eating disorders among bariatric surgery patients: The chicken or the egg?

Postoperative eating behaviors and unhealthy weight control measures are leading causes of bariatric surgery complications. Candidates for bariatric surgery and individuals with eating disorders may share common risk factors, such as a history of dieting, and/or being bullied or teased for their weight. Binge-eating disorder, night eating syndrome, and bulimia nervosa are the most common eating disorders among candidates for bariatric surgery before the operation. Malnutrition, stress, and intense fear of weight gain can lead to the development of an eating disorder after surgery as well. Plug

Beyond picky eating: avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder.

Disorders related to ingesting adequate variety and amounts of food, often dichotomized into feeding or eating disorders, depending on the need for affected individuals to be fed or to eat on their own respectively, include a wide variety of conditions. This paper focuses on disorders that are not also associated with behaviors related to weight-control or self-concept strongly influenced by body weight or shape, as seen in anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa. In contrast to eating disorders, there is a relatively sparse body of literature, inconsistent and confusing set of terms and definitio

Barriers to access and utilization of eating disorder treatment among women.

Anorexia, bulimia, and other specified feeding or eating disorders (OSFED) are psychiatric disorders recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5). One difference of eating disorders compared to other psychiatric disorders is the physical effects of the disease. Although anorexia is easier to physically detect than bulimia and OSFED, many women remain undiagnosed and untreated. Even if an eating disorder is recognized by the individual, barriers to clinical diagnosis and treatment persist. This study examines the barriers to treatment among wome

Impairments among DSM-5 eating disorders: A systematic review and multilevel meta-analysis.

Previous research revealed that people who did not meet full DSM-IV criteria for anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), or binge-eating disorder (BED) but met criteria for eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS) display high levels of psychiatric and physical morbidity commensurate with full criteria eating disorders. The DSM-5 introduced significant changes to eating disorder diagnostic criteria, so the present study aimed to determine whether the revised diagnostic criteria better distinguish between full criteria eating disorders, and other specified feeding or eating disorder

Psychological Treatment for Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD) and Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID).

OBJECTIVE: To produce a consensus statement on the psychological treatment of feeding/eating aversions seen in pediatric feeding disorder (PFD) and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), diagnoses that share common symptoms and psychological mechanisms but have historically been addressed separately in the literature. METHOD: To help bridge the gaps between ARFID and PFD treatment and research, we convened a group of experts to clarify and describe the psychological interventions for treating learned food avoidance. The current manuscript summarizes the conclusions of the meeting.

The parasubthalamic nucleus: A novel eating center in the brain.

Eating behavior stands as a fundamental determinant of animal survival and growth, intricately regulated by an amalgamation of internal and external stimuli. Coordinated movements of facial muscles and the mandible orchestrate prey capture and food processing, propelled by the allure of taste and rewarding food properties. Conversely, satiation, pain, aversion, negative emotion or perceived threats can precipitate the cessation or avoidance of eating activities. In recent years, the parasubthalamic nucleus (PSTN), located in the lateral hypothalamic area, has emerged as a focal point in feedin

DSM-5 eating disorders among adolescents and young adults in Finland: A public health concern.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the lifetime prevalence, 10-year incidence, and peak periods of onset for eating disorders as defined by the Fifth Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) among adolescents and young adults born in the 1980s in Finland. METHOD: Virtually all Finnish twins born in 1983-1987 (n = 5,600) were followed prospectively from the age of 12 years. A subsample of participants (n = 1,347) was interviewed using a semi-structured diagnostic interview in their early twenties. RESULTS: The prevalence of lifetime DSM-5 eating disorders was 17.9% for females

Online cognitive behavioral therapy enhanced for binge eating disorder: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Binge eating disorder is characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating accompanied by a sense of lack of control. Of the different treatments available, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-Enhanced and guided self-help treatment are recommended. As online treatment offers several additional advantages, we have developed a CBT-Enhanced online guided self-help intervention. The aim of this study is to determine whether this intervention reduces eating disorder pathology and increases the amount of binge free days in adults classified with binge eating disorder or other specified feedi

Pica: symptom or eating disorder? A historical assessment.

In DSM-III-R, pica, with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and rumination disorder of infancy, is accorded the status of a separate eating disorder. However, in the Draft of ICD-10, only anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are listed under eating disorders. Pica in children, and feeding disorder in infancy and childhood, are incorporated with enuresis, encopresis, and feeding, movement and speech disorders in a separate "heterogeneous group of disorders". Extensive research on the history and terminology of eating disorders from the 16th to the 20th century suggests that, historically, pica w

[Eating disorders of infancy and early childhood].

Feeding problems are frequently observed among the population of infants and small children. This problems include food refusal, overeating, selective eating and bizarre food habits. That problems might be transient, but they may last for many years among some of children. They could lead to poor weight gain, specific nutritional deficiencies and even failure to thrive. In ICD-10 classification two diagnostic categories regarding eating disorders during this life period have been proposed (Eating disorders and Pica of infancy and early childhood). That criteria are too general though, they don

Chronotype and disordered eating indicators: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Chronotype, a person's natural timing for sleep and daily activity, has been increasingly linked to eating patterns and obesity risk. However, evidence regarding its association with disordered eating indicators remains inconsistent. We systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed the association between chronotype and disordered eating indicators in the general population. Fifty-one observational studies were included, with a mean age and BMI of participants ranging from 13.3 to 52.6 years and 19.83-40.60 kg/m2. Later chronotype was associated with higher scores in binge-eating (r: 0.39; 95% CI,

OBJECTIVE: Mukbang videos are a popular cultural phenomenon that often feature a host consuming large amounts of food to entertain an audience. We aim to examine the relationship between mukbang viewing characteristics and eating disorders symptoms. METHODS: Eating disorder symptoms were evaluated using the eating disorders examination-questionnaire. Frequency of mukbang viewing, average watch time per occasion, tendency to eat while watching mukbang, and problematic mukbang viewing (using the Mukbang Addiction Scale) were assessed. We used multivariable regressions to estimate associations b
