One third of deliveries in the United States are by cesarean, a rate that far exceeds that recommended by professional organizations and experts. A dominant reason for the high overall cesarean rate is the rising primary cesarean rate. The high primary cesarean rate results from multiple factors, both clinical and nonclinical. Data on all laparoscopic appendectomies (LA) were collected prospectively from June 1990 through July 1992 and compared retrospectively with all open appendectomies (OA) done at the same hospital during the same time period. Laparoscopic appendectomies were performed in 29 patients (ages 15-47, mean 25.3 years) and OA in 77 patients (ages 18-71, mean 31.9 years, P < 0.01). OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to describe the total costs involved in the delivery, prenatal, and neonatal care for triplet pregnancies.
STUDY DESIGN: Twenty triplet pregnancies were born at our institution over the 1-year period between July 1, 1992, and June 30, 1993. Total charges for prenatal care, physician fees, antepartum admissions, delivery, postpartum inpatient and outpatient care, and neonatal inpatient and outpatient care were extracted from the hospital billing computers.

The relationship between alcohol use and injury severity was investigated in trauma patients admitted to a tertiary referral hospital during a 23-month period. Admission blood alcohol levels (BALs) were obtained on 427 trauma patients, who were stratified into three groups: those with no measurable blood alcohol, those within the legal limit of 100 mg/dL, and those over the legal limit or intoxicated.
