Canine parvovirology - A brief updated review on structural biology, occurrence, pathogenesis, clinical diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

Canine parvovirus (CPV) is a major cause of hemorrhagic diarrhea and mortality in puppies worldwide. There are 2 types of Parvovirus which affects canines: Canine parvovirus 2 (CPV-2) and Canine parvovirus 1 (CPV-1) or the Minute Virus of Canine (MVC). CPV-2 originated from Feline panleukopenia virus and has undergone genetic variation to give rise to its three variants (CPV-2a, CPV-2b and CPV-2c). Amino acid substitutions in VP2 capsid protein have led virus to adapt new host range. The original CPV-2 was known to be dominant in Japan, Belgium, Australia as well as USA and later circulated th

[Guidelines for the vaccination of small animals - 6th edition].

Vaccination is one of the most important measures for preventing infectious diseases. The basic immunization of puppies is particularly important, because the development of robust, active immunity in the young has a positive effect on the health and constitution of the entire later life. Maternal antibodies can seriously interfere with the success of the vaccination by neutralizing the administered vaccine antigen - especially with live vaccines. The higher the levels of these antibodies, the longer they may prevent successful induction of active immunity. The level of these antibodies is usu

Characterization of biological and antigenic properties of raccoon dog and blue fox parvoviruses: a monoclonal antibody study.

Parvovirus isolates from blue foxes and raccoon dogs were characterized by studying their haemagglutination properties, host range in vitro and antigenic structure. In all 3 characters, raccoon dog parvovirus resembled canine parvovirus (CPV), while blue fox parvovirus was similar to mink enteritis virus (MEV). Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) were prepared against both viruses. Raccoon dog parvovirus, while resembling CPV, had a unique antigenic site which could be specified by MAbs. The pattern of MAbs prepared against blue fox parvovirus indicated that it is a member of Type 2 MEV.

[Vaccine-associated adverse events in cats].

Owners commonly have certain concerns about vaccinations, particularly regarding potential adverse reactions. This review presents a summary of vaccine-associated adverse events (VAAEs) reported in cats. The most commonly observed VAAEs in cats include mild, non-specific signs such as a mildly reduced general condition, anorexia, and increased body temperature. These mild systemic reactions commonly indicate a good immune response. Severe VAAEs, such as type I hypersensitivity reactions (allergic or anaphylactic reaction), are very rare but potentially life-threatening. They can occur either i

Circulation of diverse protoparvoviruses in wild carnivores, Italy.

Protoparvovirus is a monophyletic viral genus that includes the species Carnivore protoparvovirus-1 infecting domestic and wild carnivores. In this paper, the results of an epidemiological survey for Carnivore protoparvovirus-1 in wild carnivores in Italy are reported. Overall, 34 (11.4%) out of 297 tested animals were positive for Carnivore protoparvovirus-1, but the frequency of detection was much higher in intestine (54%) than in spleen samples (2.8%), thus suggesting that the intestine is the best sample to collect from wild animals for parvovirus detection. Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV

Molecular Detection and Phylogenetic Characterization of CPV-2c in Apparently Healthy Domestic Cats in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, Mexico.

Carnivore protoparvovirus 1 variants (CPV-2a, CPV-2b, CPV-2c) have progressively expanded their host range to domestic cats (Felis catus), causing subclinical infection or panleukopenia-like disease. CPV-2c dominates among dogs in Western Mexico, but its presence in the local feline population had not been investigated. A cross-sectional survey was conducted (2018-2022) in 210 apparently healthy domestic cats from five municipalities of the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, Jalisco, Mexico. Genomic DNA from EDTA-anticoagulated blood was screened by generic protoparvovirus PCR; positive samples we

Evaluating Protoparvovirus carnivoran1 Risk in Wild Carnivorans and Hunting Dogs in the Valencian Community, Eastern Spain.

Protoparvovirus carnivoran1 is a highly contagious pathogen that poses a significant threat to both domestic and wild carnivorans. Despite its importance, the dynamics of viral transmission at the wildlife-domestic interface remain poorly understood. Between 2017 and 2025, 303 fecal samples from eight free-ranging mesocarnivoran species and 243 samples from hunting dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) were collected in the Valencian Community. For the dog cohort, surveys were conducted to evaluate potential risk factors for infection. All samples were screened via real-time PCR, and positive cases we

Canine parvovirus type 2 antigenic variants and in-hospital mortality in central Spain: Retrospective and prospective data (2003-2014).

BACKGROUND: Canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in young dogs. Clinical and molecular data obtained between 2003 and 2014 from a veterinary teaching hospital in central Spain were analyzed to characterize circulating CPV-2 antigenic variants and associated in-hospital outcomes. As the samples were collected more than a decade ago, the reported frequencies represent historical CPV-2 data rather than the current circulation. AIM: This study aimed to describe the historical distribution of CPV-2 antigenic variants (2a, 2b, and 2c) detected in hospita
