We present the case of a 63-year-old woman with a six-year history of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and a left iliopsoas bursitis. Radiography had detected destructive changes in her hip joint associated with her bursitis, and she had reported some paresthesia along the left anterior distal thigh. Her pain and numbness remained tolerable, and her disease activity was well controlled until she accidentally fell on the floor, which resulted in an unstable intertrochanteric fracture of left femur with displacement of the proximal portion. The fracture was successfully treated with open reduction and

Paclitaxel, a chemotherapeutic drug, induces sensorimotor peripheral neuropathy. Carvedilol, a nonselective β-adrenoreceptor blocker, has been shown to exert antioxidant activity. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has supra-physiological levels of growth factors (GFs), enhances biosynthesis of antioxidant enzymes, and suppresses oxidative stress. This study compared the ameliorative effects of carvedilol and PRP on paclitaxel-induced femoral neuropathy. Eighty-eight adult male albino rats were equally randomized into four groups: group I served as the control; group II received paclitaxel (16 mg/kg i

Bilateral femoral neuropathy is rare, especially that caused by bilateral compressive iliopsoas, psoas, or iliacus muscle hematomas. We present a case of bilateral femoral neuropathy due to spontaneous psoas hematomas developed during COVID-19 critical illness. A 41-year-old patient developed COVID-19 pneumonia, and his condition deteriorated rapidly. A decrease in the hemoglobin level prompted imaging studies during his intensive care unit (ICU) stay. Bilateral psoas hematomas were identified as the source of bleeding. Thereafter, the patient complained of weakness in both upper and lower lim

Femoral neuropathy occurs when occult retroperitoneal bleeding impinges on the appropriate nerve roots. The syndrome involves the acute onset of groin and thigh pain with characteristic flexion and external rotation of the hip. It may mimic other conditions such as acute arterial occlusion. Thorough knowledge of the anatomy of the femoral nerve explains the clinical features and leads the clinician to suspect the occurrence of this syndrome. Three cases have been reviewed that exhibited this condition as a result of retroperitoneal bleeding, a complication of systemic heparin therapy. The hemo

BACKGROUND: latrogenic nerve injury due to poor positioning and external compression is a common surgical complication. However, sciatic neuropathy from external compression and femoral nerve injury after self-retaining retraction are less-published complications.
METHODS: Surgical Morbidity and Mortality Reports from 1986 through 1995 were reviewed to identify femoral and sciatic neuropathies following intraabdominal vascular and general surgeries.
RESULTS: Two sciatic and 5 femoral neuropathies were reported, an incidence of approximately 0.17% of abdominal cases. Sciatic injuries were att

INTRODUCTION: In this investigation we report on the clinical utility of sensory nerve conduction studies of the medial femoral cutaneous (MFC) nerve.
METHODS: Sensory nerve conduction of the MFC nerve was assessed in 22 patients for whom this test was considered clinically necessary.
RESULTS: MFC nerve conduction was abnormal in 4 cases of MFC neuropathy. The most common cause was iatrogenic in 14 femoral neuropathy cases. MFC nerve conduction showed absent or low-amplitude sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) in 13 cases, with femoral motor nerve conduction abnormal in 5 cases. In 2 cases

Femoral neuropathy caused by compression of the femoral nerve is not a common syndrome when compared with other compression neuropathies. In most cases reported, the compression was intraabdominal, either in the retroperitoneal region or in the course of the nerve through the psoas major muscle. In this case, the lesion was located extraabdominally. Enlarged and inflamed nodes in the inguinal region caused compression of the nerve resulting in femoral neuropathy. Electromyography (emg) and nerve conduction studies revealed that the lesion was neurapraxia. As expected, the condition was reversi

BACKGROUND: Meralgia paraesthetica is a mononeuropathy of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. According to the literature, the nerve travels beneath the inguinal ligament 1.3 to 5.1 cm medial to the anterior superior iliac spine. Compression at this site may cause pain and paresthesia. The aim of this study was to provide more accurate measurements to improve the diagnostic and surgical management of meralgia paraesthetica.
METHODS: The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve was dissected bilaterally in 50 Thiel-embalmed human cadavers. Measurements were performed with a standard caliper at the sup

The syndrome of aortoiliac occlusive disease, also known as Leriche syndrome, is characterized by claudication, pain, and diminished femoral pulse. We highlight an unusual case of right sciatic neuropathy caused by Leriche syndrome, which was initially misdiagnosed. A 52-year-old male, with a past medical history of hypertension and bony fusion of the thoracolumbar spine, visited our hospital complaining of right leg pain and claudication, and was initially diagnosed with spinal stenosis. The following electrophysiologic findings showed right sciatic neuropathy; but his symptom was not relieve

OBJECTIVE: To report femoral neuropathy caused by nerve entrapment associated with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH).
STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
ANIMAL: Seven-year-old female spayed Boxer dog.
RESULTS: Entrapment of the right femoral nerve due to DISH caused a femoral nerve deficit and atrophy of muscle groups associated with the affected nerve. A combination of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging was performed to provide a diagnosis. Amputation of the right transverse process of the sixth lumbar vertebra at the level of nerve entrapment relieved the neurologica

PURPOSE: Neuropathy is a rare, but potentially morbid, complication of cardiac catheterization. In this study, we report the incidence of this complication and describe its clinical presentation, cause, and natural history.
METHODS: Between 1988 and 1993, 9585 cardiac catheterizations were performed at this institution. Patients in whom femoral neuropathy developed were identified through a cardiology registry. Hospital and outpatient records and personal interviews were used to determine the presentation and clinical course of each of these patients.
RESULTS: Peripheral neuropathy developed

BACKGROUND: Peripheral neuropathy is a common complication of Lyme disease. Cranial mononeuropathy, particularly that affecting the facial nerve, can be a presenting symptom, and at times, it can be associated with polyradiculopathies or plexopathies. However, isolated femoral neuropathy has not yet been reported in Lyme disease; therefore, we felt the need to present this case.
CASE PRESENTATION: Laboratory investigations were performed on a 67-year-old man living in a region at high risk for Lyme disease after he developed erythema migrans on his chest, accompanied by the swelling of his le

Neuropathies about the hip may be cause of chronic pain and disability. In most cases, these conditions derive from mechanical or dynamic compression of a segment of a nerve within a narrow osteofibrous tunnel, an opening in a fibrous structure, or a passageway close to a ligament or a muscle. Although the evaluation of nerve disorders primarily relies on neurological examination and electrophysiology, diagnostic imaging is currently used as a complement to help define the site and aetiology of nerve compression and exclude other disease possibly underlying the patient' symptoms. Diagnosis of

BACKGROUND: Infrapatellar neuropathy arises from traumatic, iatrogenic, or compression injury to the infrapatellar branch (IB) of the saphenous nerve. The risk of infrapatellar neuropathy has been shown to depend on the IB's anatomical course. The infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve (ISBN) has been discovered to take varying courses, and the IB can emerge directly from the femoral nerve. The variety of the IBSN's courses and the prevalence of cases involving the infrapatellar branch of the femoral nerve (IBFN) call the uniform IB course described in textbooks into question.

Posterior femoral cutaneous nerve (PFCN) entrapment due to overuse is rarely reported in the literature, and treatment is limited. Conventional treatment includes focused rehabilitation exercises, computed tomography-guided or magnetic resonance (MR)-guided nerve blocks, MR-guided cryoablation, and surgical decompression, but data for treatment validation and efficacy are lacking. Sub-gluteus maximus fascial plane and perineural hydrodissection may offer an effective alternative treatment for PFCN entrapment, especially given reports of successful cases with similar procedural techniques in ot

In 1913, Dr. Jacob Mackiewicz, a Polish-Jewish neurologist, described a clinical sign (a maneuver) which indicates a femoral nerve injury or L4 root injury. He called it the "cruralis phenomenon", but in the German and Slavic literature, the sign is named after him: "the patient lies prone, the examiner lifts the thigh in one hand, with the other hand, bends the patient's knee slowly; this maneuver causes severe pain in the anterior part of the thigh and over the groin".
