Prevalence and chemo-therapeutical investigations of gastrointestinal nematodes in domestic pigeons in Lahore, Pakistan.

The prevalence of gastrointestinal nematodes was studied in 143 (80 male and 63 female) domestic pigeons. Faecal samples were collected to determine the gastrointestinal nematodes of domestic pigeons through qualitative and quantitative faecal examinations. A total of 48 (male 33 and 25 female) naturally infected domestic pigeons were divided into G1 (albendzdole) and G2 (fenbendazole) treatment-groups along with one control group (C). The overall prevalence of gastrointestinal nematodes was 40.5% (58/143) in domestic pigeons. Likewise, the prevalence of gastrointestinal nematodes in males and

Ascaris suum infection in pigs sensitizes lymphocytes but suppresses their responsiveness to phytomitogens.

The effect of Ascaris suum infection and treatment with fenbendazole on the blastogenic response of peripheral blood lymphocytes to A. suum antigens and to three phytomitogens was assayed by the lymphocyte transformation technique. Repeated infections with A. suum led to the development of sensitized lymphocytes primarily responding to egg hatching fluid antigen. Treatment with fenbendazole decreased the number of specific sensitized lymphocytes, but favorably increased the resistance of pigs to reinfection. Immunity to reinfection did not correlate with the strength of the blastogenic respons

Multivariate optimization of a dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction method for the determination of six antiparasite drugs in kennel effluent waters by using second-order chromatographic data.

Six veterinary active ingredients (imidacloprid, albendazole, fenbendazole, praziquantel, fipronil and permethrin) were extracted and quantified by liquid chromatography with diode array detection in water samples from a wetland system used for the treatment of waste from a dog breeding plant. Response surface methodology, based on least-squares and artificial neural networks modelling, was applied for the optimization of a dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) procedure. Firstly, two experimental designs were built for screening and optimization, respectively. Then, the desirabilit

Multiple-species resistance to avermectin anthelmintics on beef cattle farms in Georgia, USA.

Anthelmintic resistance (AR) in gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) is a worldwide problem in all livestock production systems. Several prevalence studies performed internationally demonstrate that AR in cattle parasites is a growing problem; however, there are no published studies on prevalence in the United States (USA). In this study, we performed fecal egg count reduction tests (FECRT) on twelve cow-calf farms in Georgia, USA. On all farms the efficacy of eprinomectin pour-on (Eprinex®) and doramectin injectable (Dectomax®) was tested individually, as well as a combination treatment of dorame

Deep amplicon sequencing of preselected isolates of Parascaris equorum in β-tubulin codons associated with benzimidazole resistance in other nematodes.

BACKGROUND: The development of anthelmintic resistance (AR) to macrocyclic lactones in the equine roundworm Parascaris equorum has resulted in benzimidazoles now being the most widely used substance to control Parascaris infections. However, over-reliance on one drug class is a risk factor for the development of AR. Consequently, benzimidazole resistance is widespread in several veterinary parasites, where it is associated with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in drug targets encoded by the β-tubulin genes. The importance of these SNPs varies between different parasitic nematodes, but it

Integrated epidemiology and multi-assay evidence of anthelmintic resistance in ovine gastrointestinal nematodes of Northern India.

Gastrointestinal parasitic (GIP) infections are a major constraint to sustainable small ruminant production worldwide due to increasing anthelmintic resistance caused by extensive reliance on chemical anthelmintics. In this study, a total of 2308 faecal samples were collected and examined from naturally infected sheep across northern India, encompassing 15 districts of Punjab and 07 of Himachal Pradesh. An overall prevalence of 96.4% for GIP infections was recorded with strongyles being predominant followed by coccidia. Quantitative faecal examination revealed 62.6% light, 10.2% moderate and 2

Gastrointestinal nematodes and anthelmintic resistance in Danish goat herds.

The prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in Danish goats and the presence of anthelmintic resistance (AR) in 10 selected herds were investigated during April-September 2012. All Danish herds (n = 137) with 10 or more adult goats were invited to participate, and of these 27 herds met the inclusion criterion of more than 10 young kids never treated with anthelmintics. Questionnaire data on management were collected, and faecal samples from 252 kids were analysed by the McMaster technique. From all herds with a mean faecal egg count (FEC) above 300 eggs per g of faeces, pooled samples were st

Faecal egg count reduction tests and nemabiome analysis reveal high frequency of multi-resistant parasites on sheep farms in north-east Germany involving multiple strongyle parasite species.

Anthelmintic resistance in sheep parasitic gastrointestinal nematodes is widespread and a severe health and economic issue but prevalence of resistance and involved parasite species are unknown in Germany. Here, the faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) was performed on eight farms using fenbendazole, ivermectin and moxidectin and on four farms using only moxidectin. A questionnaire was used to obtain data on management practices to potentially identify risk factors for presence of resistance. All requirements of the recently revised WAAVP guideline for diagnosing anthelmintic resistance usi

A simple and efficient protocol for the treatment of zebrafish colonies infected with parasitic nematodes.

Abstract Our zebrafish colony experienced a period of increased mortality rate of 6.5 times more deaths per month in a colony of over 13,000 zebrafish (Danio rerio), which developed over 3 months. We observed that before death, affected fish appeared emaciated, often with an abdominal bulge. We performed dissection on 18 fish that had this appearance and found in 15 that their gut was infected with a nematode that closely resembled Pseudocapillaria tomentosa. We devised a treatment protocol for this nematode infection, which involved addition of fenbendazole, a drug used to treat nematode infe

Toxicity evaluation of prophylactic treatments for mites and pinworms in mice.

The detection of external and internal parasites in laboratory mice is a particularly problematic aspect of animal health evaluation. Because these organisms must be detected by direct examination of the feces or hair coat, low-level infestation or sporadic shedding can make them difficult to detect, thereby undermining confidence that negative reports are truly negative. Prophylactic treatment of suspect colonies with anthelminthics and/or insecticides may therefore be indicated under some circumstances. However, when considering the use of prophylactic treatments, the potential for toxicity
