Airborne transmission of highly pathogenic H7N1 influenza virus in ferrets.

UNLABELLED: Avian H7 influenza viruses are recognized as potential pandemic viruses, as personnel often become infected during poultry outbreaks. H7 infections in humans typically cause mild conjunctivitis; however, the H7N9 outbreak in the spring of 2013 has resulted in severe respiratory disease. To date, no H7 viruses have acquired the ability for sustained transmission among humans. Airborne transmission is considered a requirement for the emergence of pandemic influenza, and advanced knowledge of the molecular changes or signature required for transmission would allow early identification

Abnormal endocrine pancreas function at birth in cystic fibrosis ferrets.

Diabetes is a common comorbidity in cystic fibrosis (CF) that worsens prognosis. The lack of an animal model for CF-related diabetes (CFRD) has made it difficult to dissect how the onset of pancreatic pathology influences the emergence of CFRD. We evaluated the structure and function of the neonatal CF endocrine pancreas using a new CFTR-knockout ferret model. Although CF kits are born with only mild exocrine pancreas disease, progressive exocrine and endocrine pancreatic loss during the first months of life was associated with pancreatic inflammation, spontaneous hyperglycemia, and glucose in

Ferrets as a model for morbillivirus pathogenesis, complications, and vaccines.

The ferret is a standard laboratory animal that can be accommodated in most animal facilities. While not susceptible to measles, ferrets are a natural host of canine distemper virus (CDV), the closely related carnivore morbillivirus. CDV infection in ferrets reproduces all clinical signs associated with measles in humans, including the typical rash, fever, general immunosuppression, gastrointestinal and respiratory involvement, and neurological complications. Due to this similarity, experimental CDV infection of ferrets is frequently used to assess the efficacy of novel vaccines, and to charac

Outbreak of canine distemper in domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo).

In 2006 an outbreak of canine distemper affected 14 young domestic ferrets in Barcelona, Spain. Their clinical signs included a reduced appetite, lethargy, dyspnoea, coughing, sneezing, mucopurulent ocular and nasal discharges, facial and perineal dermatitis, diarrhoea, splenomegaly and fever. Late in the course of the disease, general desquamation and pruritus, and hyperkeratotic/crusting dermatitis of the lips, eyes, nose, footpads, and perineal area were observed. None of the ferrets developed neurological signs. Non-regenerative anaemia and high serum concentrations of alpha- and beta-glob

Helicobacter mustelae-associated gastric adenocarcinoma in ferrets (Mustela putorius furo).

Helicobacter pylori in humans is associated with active, chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and most recently has been linked epidemiologically to gastric adenocarcinoma. A related organism, Helicobacter mustelae, naturally infects ferrets and also causes a persistent gastritis, a precancerous lesion, and focal glandular atrophy of the proximal antrum. In this report, we document the clinical presentation and histopathologic confirmation of H. mustelae-associated gastric adenocarcinoma in two middle-aged male ferrets. The ferret appears to be well suited to study the pathogenesis of natu

Helicobacter pylori-like microorganisms and chronic active gastritis in ferrets.

To determine the prevalence and histology of Helicobacter pylori (HP) associated gastritis in young ferrets, we examined 36 normal 2- to 4-month old ferrets. Identification of HP-like microorganisms included Warthin Starry stains of tissue sections, rapid urease test on fresh tissue, and culture. HP-like microorganisms were found in the stomachs of 35/36 ferrets. The highest density of microorganisms was seen in the antrum, where HP-like microorganisms were present in the pits and in deep glands. HP-like microorganisms were also seen in the cardia and on the foveolar epithelium of the fundus,

Derivation of gnotobiotic ferrets: perinatal diet and hand-rearing requirements.

A procedure is described which has resulted in successful gnotobiotic derivation of the domestic ferret. The most critical element of this hand-rearing procedure was found to be diet, with ferret milk being required for at least the first 7 days. Puppy milk replacer was phased in during the next 10 days, and enriched cow's milk sufficed thereafter. Around-the-clock sip-feeding with fire-polished Pasteur pipettes was necessary at intervals gradually increasing from 1 to 1.5 hours at birth to 3 hours by day 21. Temperature regulation was accomplished with an electric heating pad placed eccentric

Whole body lymphangioscintigraphy in ferrets chronically infected with Brugia malayi.

Whole body lymphangioscintigraphy was performed after intradermal injection of 99mtechnetium human serum albumin or antimony colloid in the distal hindlimbs and forelimbs of ferrets chronically infected with Brugia malayi. The findings were compared with control ferrets and those with surgical interruption of the iliac lymphatics. While only one infected ferret manifested chronic hindlimb lymphedema, all exhibited delayed transport of radioisotope from the hindpaw with obstruction in the groin, poor or absent visualization of central lymphatic channels and regional lymph nodes, a picture simil

A ferret model of alcohol consumption during adolescence.

Binge drinking is a drinking pattern that results in a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 g/dL or higher in a 2-h period. Binge drinking rates are often highest in adolescents. Persistent adolescent binge drinking has unique consequences and can produce social, cognitive, and executive function deficits. Most of what we know about the mechanisms underlying the effects of adolescent alcohol exposure comes from rodent studies. We developed an adolescent alcohol consumption paradigm in ferrets termed Intermittent One-Bottle (IOB). Ferrets received a bottle of 5% alcohol for 24 h (no water)

Isolation and Culture of Ferret Airway Stem Cells.

Well-differentiated airway epithelial cultures are commonly used to study airway stem cell lineages, ion and fluid transport, respiratory virus infection and replication, and disease mechanisms in vitro. This culture model involves the isolation and expansion of airway stem cells followed by their differentiation at an air-liquid interface (ALI), a process that has been previously documented in humans and mice. Domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) have gained considerable importance in respiratory disease research due to their notable susceptibility to these conditions and their anatomical

IgG binding characteristics of ferret Fcγ receptors.

Studies in animal models are essential to expanding the scope of interventions evaluated for safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy in clinical trials. Ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) are a key small-animal model for examining acquisition, replication, transmission, and disease manifestation, with particular relevance in modeling diverse viruses that target the respiratory tract. However, despite use in studies of vaccine immunogenicity and protection, as well as passive antibody transfer, there is little data characterizing antibody and Fc receptor biology in this species. To address this gap,

Development of multisensory processing in ferret parietal cortex.

It is well known that the nervous system adjusts itself to its environment during development. Although a great deal of effort has been directed towards understanding the developmental processes of the individual sensory systems (e.g., vision, hearing, etc.), only one major study has examined the maturation of multisensory processing in cortical neurons. Therefore, the present investigation sought to evaluate multisensory development in a different cortical region and species. Using multiple single-unit recordings in anaesthetised ferrets (n = 18) of different ages (from postnatal day 80 to 30

The Ferret as a Model for Filovirus Pathogenesis and Countermeasure Evaluation.

The domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) has long been a popular animal model for evaluating viral pathogenesis and transmission as well as the efficacy of candidate countermeasures. Without question, the ferret has been most widely implemented for modeling respiratory viruses, particularly influenza viruses; however, in recent years, it has gained attention as a novel animal model for characterizing filovirus infections. Although ferrets appear resistant to infection and disease caused by Marburg and Ravn viruses, they are highly susceptible to lethal disease caused by Ebola, Sudan, Bundib

Tuberculosis in a pet ferret (Mustela putorius furo).

A 9-month old pet ferret was presented to a veterinarian with symptoms of weight loss, apathy, and hyporexia. Explorative laparotomy identified a firm mass of approximately 2 × 2 × 2 cm in size in the mesentery of the jejunum. Because of the poor general condition and the unfavorable prognosis, the ferret was euthanized during surgery. The mass was resected in total and submitted to histological examination which revealed a granulomatous and necrotizing lymphadenitis. Acid fast bacteria were detected by Fite-Faraco staining leading to the suspicion of an infection with Mycobacteria sp. PCR con

Visual Corticocortical Inputs to Ferret Area 18.

Visual cortical areas in the adult mammalian brain are linked by a network of interareal feedforward and feedback circuits. We investigated the topography of feedback projections to ferret (Mustela putorius furo) area 18 from extrastriate areas 19, 21, and Ssy. Our objective was to characterize the anatomical organization of the extrastriate feedback pool to area 18. We also wished to determine if feedback projections to area 18 share similar features as feedback projections to area 17. We injected the tracer cholera toxin B subunit (CTb) into area 18 of adult ferrets to visualize the distribu

Human Exposure to Ferret Badger Rabies in Taiwan.

On 17 July 2013, Taiwan confirmed multiple cases of the rabies virus (RABV) in the wild Taiwan Ferret badger (TFB) (Melogale moschata) member of the family Mustelidae. This study aims at investigating the risk factors for human exposure to rabid TFBs. Statistical inference based on Pearson correlation showed that there was a strong positive correlation between the total number of positive TFB rabies cases and the number of rabid TFBs involved with human activities in 81 enzootic townships (r = 0.91; p < 0.001). A logistic regression analysis indicated that the risk probability of a human being

The Influence of Adalimumab on the Healing of Apical Periodontitis in Ferrets.

INTRODUCTION: Given the increasing use of anti-tumor necrosis factor α (anti-TNFα) biologic medications, and their interferences with the immune-inflammatory response, this study evaluated the effect of adalimumab (anti-TNFα), on healing and healing time of apical periodontitis (AP) in ferrets. METHODS: Twelve male ferrets received cone beam computed tomography of the jaws at baseline health (T0); AP confirmation (T1); and 30 (T2), 60 (T3), and 90 (T4) days after root canal treatment (RCT) to monitor healing. All animals had AP induced in the canines; 3 ferrets (12 teeth) provided the positiv
