Exotic FeII/FeIII Local Environments in the Hexagonal Channels of Hydroxyapatite.

In this fundamental solid-state chemistry study, two sample series were investigated in depth: iron(III)-doped hydroxyapatite (HA) compounds obtained from a co-sintering process of hematite and pure HA under air and iron(III)-doped HA compounds obtained from a co-sintering process from iron(II) acetate and pure HA under an argon atmosphere. X-ray diffraction, UV-visible, Fourier transform infrared, 1H and 31P NMR, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR,) and Mössbauer spectroscopy methods were coupled to unravel the Fe valence states, the interactions with other anionic species (OH- and PO43-),

Effect of Phosphate and Ferritin Subunit Composition on the Kinetics, Structure, and Reactivity of the Iron Core in Human Homo- and Heteropolymer Ferritins.

Ferritins are highly conserved supramolecular protein nanostructures that play a key role in iron homeostasis. Thousands of iron atoms can be stored inside their hollow cavity as a hydrated ferric oxyhydroxide mineral. Although phosphate associates with the ferritin iron nanoparticles, the effect of physiological concentrations on the kinetics, structure, and reactivity of ferritin iron cores has not yet been explored. Here, the iron loading and mobilization kinetics were studied in the presence of 1-10 mM phosphate using homopolymer and heteropolymer ferritins having different H to L subunit

Dimerization of [FeIII(bpy)3]3+ in Aqueous Solutions: Elucidating a Mechanism Based on Historical Proposals, Electrochemical Data, and Computational Free Energy Analysis.

Iron(II) tris-bipyridine, [FeII(bpy)3]2+, is a historically significant organometallic coordination complex with attractive redox and photophysical properties. With respect to energy storage, it is a low-cost, high-redox potential complex and thus attractive for use as a catholyte in aqueous redox flow batteries. Despite these favorable characteristics, its oxidized Fe(III) form undergoes dimerization to form μ-O-[FeIII(bpy)2(H2O)]24+, leading to a dramatic ∼0.7 V decrease during battery discharge. To date, the energetics and complete mechanism of this slow, sequential electrochemical-chemical

The fate of co-existent cadmium and arsenic during Fe(II)-induced transformation of As(V)/Cd(II)-bearing ferrihydrite.

Ubiquitous co-existence of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) in smelting operations and mine drainage presents a major challenge to the environment. Fe(II)-induced ferrihydrite transformation into secondary, more crystalline minerals often controls the geochemical behavior of associated contaminants including arsenate (As(V)) and Cd(II) in natural and contaminated environments. However, the fate of co-existent As(V) and Cd(II) and the underlying mechanism during this transformation process remain unclear. In this contribution, ferrihydrite containing co-precipitated Cd(II) and As(V) with Fe(II) un

Synthesis of FeIII and FeIV Cyanide Complexes Using Hypervalent Iodine Reagents as Cyano-Transfer One-Electron Oxidants.

We disclose a new reactivity mode for electrophilic cyano λ3 -iodanes as group transfer one-electron oxidants to synthesize FeIII and FeIV cyanide complexes. The inherent thermal instability of high-valent FeIV compounds without π-donor ligands (such as oxido (O2- ), imido (RN2- ) or nitrido (N3- )) makes their isolation and structural characterization a very challenging task. We report the synthesis of an FeIV cyanide complex [(N3 N')FeCN] (4) by two consecutive single electron transfer (SET) processes from FeII precursor [(N3 N')FeLi(THF)] (1) with cyanobenziodoxolone (CBX). The FeIV complex

Persistent free radicals in biochar enhance superoxide-mediated Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling and the efficacy of CaO2 Fenton-like treatment.

Superoxide radicals (O2•-) produced by the reaction of Fe(III) with H2O2 can regenerate Fe(II) in Fenton-like reactions, and conditions that facilitate this function enhance Fenton treatment. Here, we developed an efficient Fenton-like system by using calcium peroxide/biochar (CaO2/BC) composites as oxidants and tartaric acid-chelated Fe(III) as catalysts, and tested it for enhanced O2•--based Fe(II) regeneration and faster sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. SMX degradation rates and peroxide utilization efficiencies were significantly higher with CaO2/BC than those with CaO2 or H2O2 lacking

Novel core-shell sulfidated nano-Fe(0) particles for chromate sequestration: Promoted electron transfer and Fe(II) production.

Sulfidated nanoscale valent iron in form of FeS/Fe (0) shell-core nanoparticle has the aptitude to be a promising remediation material toward reductive removal of metal oxyanions. However, disrupted contact between Fe (0) core and FeS shell by thick iron oxides limited its reactivity improvement, and its mechanism of electron transfer remains unveiled. In this study, a novel sulfidated nZVI core-shell particles (FeS/Fe (0)) was fabricated via a modified post sulfidation approach to achieve a more uniform coverage of FeS for aqueous Cr(VI) sequestration. SEM and STEM tests confirmed the formati

Effect of Coexisting Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides on Cr(VI) Reduction by Fe(II)-Bearing Clay Minerals.

Fe(II)-bearing clay minerals are important electron sources for Cr(VI) reduction in subsurface environments. However, it is not clear how iron (oxyhydr)oxides impact Cr(VI) reduction by Fe(II)-bearing clays as the two minerals can coexist in soil and sediment aggregates. This study investigated Cr(VI) reduction in the mixed suspensions of reduced nontronite NAu-2 (rNAu-2) and ferrihydrite (Fe(II)/Cr(VI) = 3:1). When the mineral premixing time increased from 0 to 72 h, Cr(VI) reduction was accelerated prominently in the initial stage, while Cr(VI) sorption was inhibited drastically. Mineral pre

Redox thermodynamics of the Fe(3+)/Fe(2+) couple in horseradish peroxidase and its cyanide complex.

The thermodynamics of Fe3+ to Fe2+ reduction for the five-coordinate high-spin native form of horseradish peroxidase and for its six-coordinate low-spin cyanide adduct have been determined from variable-temperature UV-vis spectroelectrochemical experiments. In both cases, the DeltaH degrees 'rc and DeltaS degrees 'rc values are positive. Hence, the negative reduction potentials turn out to be the result of two opposing and partially compensating contributions: a large enthalpic term, which is the determinant of the negative E degrees ' values for both species, and a smaller, yet relevant, entr

Synthesis and determination of some biological activities of novel 2,4-dinitrophenyl derivatives.

The antioxidant and radical scavenging activities of the synthesized compounds 3, 5, and 6 were determined by various in vitro assays such as 2,2-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid radical (ABTS(·+) ) scavenging, ferric ion (Fe(3+) ) reducing power and ferrous ion (Fe(2+) ) chelating activities. Moreover, these activities were compared to those of standard antioxidants such as butylated hydroxyanisole, butylated hydroxytoluene, and trolox. The results showed that the new compounds (3, 5, and 6) had potential antioxidant activity. Besides, inhibition of the two human cytosolic carb

Ferrihydrite transformations in flooded paddy soils: rates, pathways, and product spatial distributions.

Complex interactions between redox-driven element cycles in soils influence iron mineral transformation processes. The rates and pathways of iron mineral transformation processes have been studied intensely in model systems such as mixed suspensions, but transformation in complex heterogeneous porous media is not well understood. Here, mesh bags containing 0.5 g of ferrihydrite were incubated in five water-saturated paddy soils with contrasting microbial iron-reduction potential for up to twelve weeks. Using X-ray diffraction analysis, we show near-complete transformation of the ferrihydrite t

Biochar-derived dissolved black carbon accelerates ferrihydrite microbial transformation and subsequent imidacloprid degradation.

The effects of an electron shuttle (dissolved black carbon (DBC) derived from biochar) on the microbial reduction of ferrihydrite and subsequent imidacloprid (IMI) degradation were studied. The results showed that DBC addition enhanced the microbial reduction of Fe(III) in ferrihydrite and increased the quantity of Fe(II) released into the liquid phase. The electron transfer capacity of DBC was significantly influenced by the content of redox-active oxygen-containing functional groups (e.g., quinone, hydroquinone, and polyphenol groups), which was dependent on the pyrolysis temperature. Effect of Fe(II) and Fe(III) doping levels on the structural and binding mechanism of graphene oxide chitosan: Spectral analysis and density function theory calculation.

Iron (Fe) modification has been recognized as an attractive method to improve the performance of carbon-based materials, but it is still not clear about the effects of Fe modification and doping levels on the structure of carbon-based materials, and the binding mechanism at a molecular level. In this study, Fe(II) and Fe(III) with the molar ratio of 1:1, 2:1, 4:1, and 5:1 are used as modifiers, and graphene oxide and chitosan (GOCS) are used as the carbon-based matrix materials to prepare a series of Fe modified GOCS composites named Fe(II, III)GCs-1/1, 2/1, 4/1, and 5/1, respectively. [Fe(NCMe)6](BF4)2 is a bifunctional catalyst for styrene aziridination by nitrene transfer and heterocycle expansion by subsequent dipolar insertion.

The solvated iron(II) salt [Fe(NCMe)6](BF4)2 (Me = methyl) is shown to be a bifunctional catalyst with respect to aziridination of styrene. The salt serves as an active catalyst for nitrene transfer from PhINTs to styrene to form 2-phenyl-N-tosylaziridine (Ph = phenyl; Ts = tosyl, -S{O}2-p-C6H4Me). The iron(II) salt also acts as a Lewis acid in non-coordinating CH2Cl2 solution, to catalyze heterolytic CN bond cleavage of the aziridine and insertion of dipolarophiles. The 1,3-zwitterionic intermediate is presumably supported by interaction of the metal dication with the anion, and by resonance

Fe(II)-Catalyzed Recrystallization Drives Phosphorus and Aluminum Release from Goethite.

Goethite often harbors impurities, such as phosphorus (P) and aluminum (Al), which are incorporated into its structure through direct substitution or coprecipitation with nanocrystalline phases. Understanding the processes that drive the release of P and Al from goethite is of paramount importance for the iron ore industry and for managing nutrient and pollutant behavior in the environment. This study investigates the impact of Fe(II)-catalyzed recrystallization on the release of P and Al from goethite. We evaluated the solubility and extractability of P and Al in suspensions of Al- and P-copr

Thermodynamic Two-Site Surface Reaction Model for Predicting Munition Constituent Reduction Kinetics with Iron (Oxyhydr)oxides.

Iron (oxyhydr)oxides comprise a significant portion of the redox-active fraction of soils and are key reductants for remediation of sites contaminated with munition constituents (MCs). Previous studies of MC reduction kinetics with iron oxides have focused on the concentration of sorbed Fe(II) as a key parameter. To build a reaction kinetic model, it is necessary to predict the concentration of sorbed Fe(II) as a function of system conditions and the redox state. A thermodynamic framework is formulated that includes a generalized double-layer model that utilizes surface acidity and surface com

Mineralogical characteristics of root iron plaque and its functional mechanism for regulating Cr phytoextraction of hyperaccumulator Leersia hexandra Swartz.

Leersia hexandra Swartz (L. hexandra) is a promising hyperaccumulator for Cr pollution remediation, but whether its Cr phytoextraction is subject to the root surface-attached iron plaque (IP) remains unclear. In this research, the natural and artificial IPs were proven to be comprised of small amounts of exchangeable Fe as well as carbonate Fe, and dominantly Fe minerals involving amorphous two-line ferrihydrite (Fh), poorly crystalline lepidocrocite (Le) and highly crystalline goethite (Go). The Fe content in the artificial IPs augmented with increasing induced Fe(II) concentration, and the 5

Microbial communities contribute to the elimination of As, Fe, Mn, and NH4+ from groundwater in household sand filters.

Household sand filters (SFs) are widely applied to remove iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), arsenic (As), and ammonium (NH4+) from groundwater in the Red River delta, Vietnam. Processes in the filters probably include a combination of biotic and abiotic reactions. However, there is limited information on the microbial communities treating varied groundwater compositions and on whether biological oxidation of Fe(II), Mn(II), As(III), and NH4+ contributes to the overall performance of SFs. We therefore analyzed the removal efficiencies, as well as the microbial communities and their potential activitie

Enhanced degradation of tetracycline over FeS-based Fenton-like process: Autocatalytic decomposition of H2O2 and reduction of Fe(III).

This study constructed a FeS-based Fenton-like process to explore the degradation of TTC in the presence of copper ions. The acidic condition of pH 3 was more favorable to the H2O2 decomposition and TTC degradation, and it was slightly enhanced by Cu(II). The production of •OH from H2O2 was revealed through radical scavenging and benzoic acid probe experiments, and the ratio of H2O2 decomposition to •OH production was about 1-1.5, which is comparatively consistent with the theoretical ratio. FeS-based Fenton process was proved to be a homogenous system, the slow release of Fe(II) source and th

Humic acid and fulvic acid facilitate the formation of vivianite and the transformation of cadmium via microbially-mediated iron reduction.

The effects of humic acids (HA) and fulvic acids (FA) on the fate of Cd in anaerobic environment upon microbial reduction of Cd-bearing ferrihydrite (Fh) with Geobacter metallireducens were investigated. The results showed that HA and FA could promote the reductive dissolution of Fh and the formation of vivianite. After incubation of 38 d, vivianite accounted for 47.19%, 59.22%, and 48.53% of total Fe in biological control batch (BCK), HA and FA batches (C/Fe molar ratio of 1.0), respectively, by Mössbauer spectroscopy analysis.
