Biomechanical analysis of the wrist arthroplasty in rheumatoid arthritis: a finite element analysis.

The total replacement of wrists affected by rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has had mixed outcomes in terms of failure rates. This study was therefore conducted to analyse the biomechanics of wrist arthroplasty using recently reported implants that have shown encouraging results with the aim of providing some insights for the future development of wrist implants. A model of a healthy wrist was developed using computed tomography images from a healthy volunteer. An RA model was simulated based on all ten general characteristics of the disease. The ReMotion ™ total wrist system was then modelled to si

A combination of the finite element analysis and experimental indentation via the cornea.

The purpose of this study was to perform a set of experimental indentation test to certify our proposed eye model enables to have a better deformation assessment for the eye globe under the indentation load compared to other eye models. To do that, twenty-four enucleated human globes were removed from the cadavers. A screw at 5 different loading rates indented to the eye globes and the resulting macroscopic force-displacement as a result of the deformation in the apex of the cornea was measured. The experimental results revealed significantly higher stiffness, elastic modulus, and maximum forc

Finite element analysis of the valgus knee joint of an obese child.

BACKGROUND: Knee valgus and varus morbidity is at the second top place in children lower limb deformity diseases. It may cause abnormal stress distribution. The magnitude and location of contact forces on tibia plateau during gait cycle have been indicated as markers for risk of osteoarthritis. So far, few studies reported the contact stress and force distribution on tibial plateau of valgus knee of children. METHODS: To estimate the contact stresses and forces on tibial plateau of an 8-year old obese boy with valgus knee and a 7-year old healthy boy, three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE

Analysis of the abfraction lesions formation mechanism by the finite element method.

INTRODUCTION: An abfraction lesion is a type of a non-carious cervical lesion (NCCL) that represents a sharp defect on the cervical part of tooth, caused by occlusal biomechanical forces. The largest prevalence of the NCCL is found on the mandibular first premolar. The goal of the study is, by means of a numerical method - the finite element method (FEM), in an appropriate computer program, conduct a stress analysis of the mandibular premolar under various static loads, with a special reference to the biomechanics of cervical tooth region. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A three-dimensional model of th

Generated stresses finite element analysis of restored endodontically treated molar using single versus double titanium posts : Abbreviated title: generated stresses finite element analysis of restored endodontically treated molar.

When teeth are extensively injured, the restoration of Endodontically Treated Teeth (ETT) presents substantial obstacles. For these restorations to be successful over the long term, it is essential to ensure appropriate retention and resistance to fracture. The purpose of this study is to use 3D finite element analysis (FEA) to assess the stress distribution in severely damaged ETT following the installation of single versus double titanium posts. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was used to scan an undamaged human mandibular first molar. Three post designs were examined; Model D received

[Effects of ligaments and plantar fascia on the foot finite element analysis].

Some 3D finite element systemic models are currently established and used to simulate the foot biomechanical state. However, during most of these 3D foot finite element static analyses, ligaments and plantar fascia are generally defined by connecting the corresponding attachment points on the bones, and the spaces between the bones are fused together by solid elements with given cartilage stiffness to simulate the connection of bones. This "connection of bones" takes the place of the real interactions between neighbored bones and enhances the structure of foot, which possibly leads to the resu

A finite-element analysis study of the metatarsophalangeal joint of the hallux rigidus.

Hallux rigidus was first described in 1887. Many aetiological factors have been postulated, but none has been supported by scientific evidence. We have examined the static and dynamic imbalances in the first metatarsophalangeal joint which we postulated could be the cause of this condition. We performed a finite-element analysis study on a male subject and calculated a mathematical model of the joint when subjected to both normal and abnormal physiological loads. The results gave statistically significant evidence for an increase in tension of the plantar fascia as the cause of abnormal stress

Finite element analysis of anatomically-modelled prosthetic incus for ossicular chain reconstruction.

Ossicular chain reconstruction (OCR) is the gold standard for repairing conductive hearing loss (CHL) using prosthetic devices. However, few techniques can validate prosthesis performance before translational implementation. This study not only validates a Finite Element (FE) model for examining (reconstructed) middle ear biomechanics, but also evaluates the potential of personalised prosthetic devices for OCR. Additionally, this research examines tricalcium phosphate (TCP), as a potential biomaterial, besides titanium and hydroxyapatite (HA), as commonly used biomaterials for use in (personal

Finite element analysis of the Fibula's contribution to lower extremity torsional stiffness.

AIMS: The purpose of this article is to investigate the effects of the fibula on the torsional stiffness of the lower limb. A comprehensive model of the lower limb was constructed, including the resected femur, patella, tibia, fibula, and foot, with tendons and ligaments. Two configurations were developed, with and without the presence of the fibula, to evaluate the resulting stress state and consequently determine the contribution of the fibula to the torsional stiffness of the lower limb. METHODS: The finite element method was used to analyse how the fibula affects the stress distribution i

Finite Element Analysis of a Bare Metal Stent Therapeutic for Aortic Dissection.

Since the endovascular repair for aortic dissection by stent graft still has limitations of the application scope and complications, our group has been developing and evaluating a new stenting function by replacing it with a large self-expandable bare metal stent. In this study, we use finite element analysis to evaluate the remodeling outcomes of the dissected aorta by this new stent. An ideal aortic dissection model was also designed using numerical simulations based on previous animal and in vitro experiments, and then a 32mm bare metal stent was deployed at the location of the lesion.
