Fire ant-detecting canines: a complementary method in detecting red imported fire ants.

In this investigation, detection dogs are trained and used in identifying red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren, and their nests. The methodology could assist in reducing the frequency and scope of chemical treatments for red imported fire ant management and thus reduce labor costs and chemical use as well as improve control and quarantine efficiency. Three dogs previously trained for customs quarantine were retrained to detect the scents of red imported fire ants. After passing tests involving different numbers of live red imported fire ants and three other ant species--Crematogast

Chemical composition and toxicological properties of particulate emissions from lithium-ion battery fires.

This study assessed the physical, chemical, and toxicological properties of particulate emissions produced from lithium-ion battery fires. Commercially-available nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery modules were overcharged to trigger thermal runaway. The first experiment allowed the battery modules to burn without engaging any suppression system, while two additional experiments were performed with water and a potassium-based aerosol to suppress the battery fires. Results showed the formation of large diameter particles with geometric mean diameters of ∼360 nm, with their majority be below 1

Effective restoration can avoid peatland fires: Large scale counterfactual assessment in Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Peatland fires are the third largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Indonesia, a country that stores over half of the world's tropical peatland carbon. These fires cause significant economic losses to human health, crops, and forests. After the devastating 2015 fires, the Government of Indonesia and several partners initiated large scale restoration efforts via peat rewetting with canal blocks. We report on a statistical counterfactual evaluation of peat rewetting on fire occurrence in peatlands in West and Central Kalimantan from 2017 to 2022. We find heterogeneous impacts of rew

War fires promote short-term alien plant colonization in eastern Ukraine's pine forests.

Russian full-scale military invasion has driven multiple ecosystem disturbances in the arid zone of eastern Ukraine, including fires of varying severity. Local forests, largely dominated by Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), were planted as uniform monocultures in a region where low-density woodlands had historically prevailed. However, little is known about how military-related fires affect successional trajectories in disturbed pine forests. We conducted fully digital surveys of vascular plant composition using under-canopy imagery collected by an unmanned aerial vehicle. Transects were estab

Using Low-Cost Sensors for Fenceline Monitoring to Measure Emissions from Prescribed Fires.

Prescribed burning is a highly effective way to reduce wildfire risk; however, prescribed fires release harmful pollutants. Quantifying emissions from prescribed fires is valuable for atmospheric modeling and understanding impacts on nearby communities. Emissions are commonly reported as emission factors, which are traditionally calculated cumulatively over an entire combustion event. However, cumulative emission factors do not capture variability in emissions throughout a combustion event. Reliable emission factor calculations require knowledge of the state of the plume, which is unavailable

Seeking natural capital projects: Forest fires, haze, and early-life exposure in Indonesia.

Natural capital will be depleted rapidly and excessively if the long-term, offsite impacts of depletion are ignored. By examining the case of tropical forest burning, we illustrate such myopia: Pursuit of short-term economic gains results in air pollution that causes long-term, irreversible health impacts. We integrate longitudinal data on prenatal exposure to the 1997 Indonesian forest fires with child nutritional outcomes and find that mean exposure to air pollution during the prenatal stage is associated with a half-SD decrease in height-for-age z score at age 17, which is robust to several

Carbon dioxide can eliminate operating room fires from alcohol-based surgical skin preps.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical fires are a rare event that still occur at a significant rate and can result in severe injury and death. Surgical fires are fueled by vapor from alcohol-based skin preparations in the presence of increased oxygen concentration and a spark from an energy device. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is used to extinguish electrical fires, and we sought to evaluate its effect on fire creation in the operating room. We hypothesize that CO2 delivered by the energy device will decrease the frequency of surgical fires fueled by alcohol-based skin preparations. METHODS: An ex vivo model with 1

Febrile Infection-Related Epilepsy Syndrome (FIRES): An Overview of Treatment and Recent Patents.

BACKGROUND: New-Onset Refractory Status Epilepticus (NORSE) refers to a clinical presentation in a patient without active epilepsy or other existing relevant neurological disorder, with new onset of refractory status epilepticus in the absence of a clear acute or active structural, metabolic, or toxic cause. Febrile Infection-Related Epilepsy Syndrome (FIRES) is a subset of NORSE that requires a febrile infection between 24 hours and 2 weeks prior to the onset of refractory status epilepticus, with or without fever at the onset of status epilepticus, and with no restriction to the age of the p

Cardiorespiratory hospitalizations associated with smoke exposure during the 1997, Southeast Asian forest fires.

We investigated the cardiorespiratory health effects of smoke exposure from the 1997 Southeast Asian Forest Fires among persons who were hospitalized in the region of Kuching, Malaysia. We selected admissions to seven hospitals in the Kuching region from a database of all hospital admissions in the state of Sarawak during January 1, 1995 and December 31, 1998. For several cardiorespiratory disease classifications we used Holt-Winters time-series analyses to determine whether the total number of monthly hospitalizations during the forest fire period (August 1 to October 31, 1997), or post-fire

Implications of canyon fire behavior under different fuel conditions for fire risk assessment.

Canyon fire spread often involves sudden acceleration associated with eruptive fire. However, the critical condition of eruptive fire, and the effectiveness of forest management in reducing fire risks in such complex terrains, remain unclear. This study conducted systematic canyon fire experiments using two fuel types and different fuel loads to investigate their influence on canyon fire behavior and eruptive fire, and to discuss their implications for fire risk assessment. The results indicate that fuel conditions influence fire behavior due to varying physicochemical properties and fuel bed

Data-Driven Selection of Parametric and Travelling Fire Models for Performance-based Fire Design.

INTRODUCTION: In Australia, as in many other developed countries, the current healthcare environment is characterised by increasing differentiation and patient acuity, aging of patients and workforce, staff shortages and a varied professional skills mix, and this is particularly so in rural areas. Rural healthcare clinicians are confronted with a broad range of challenges in their daily practice. Within this context, the challenges faced by rural acute care clinicians were explored and innovative strategies suggested. This article reports the findings of a study that explored these challenges

In vivo and in vitro comparison of fire ant venom and fire ant whole body extract.

Thirty-four patients with a history of immediate hypersensitivity to the sting of the imported fire ant were evaluated in a study designed to compare the diagnostic usefulness of fire ant whole body extract (WBE) preparations with that of fire ant venom (IFAV). Ninety-one percent (31/34) of the hypersensitive patients skin tested with IFAV at a maximal concentration of 1:5 X 10(3), v/v, demonstrated a wheal equal to or greater than the histamine control. Fifty-three percent (18/34) of the group were skin test positive to a WBE preparation. When the criteria for a positive skin test were relaxe

PANoptosis fuels the fire of arthritis.

Innate immune cell death is critical for host defense but drives inflammatory disease when dysregulated. In this issue of Immunity, Huang et al. report that the complement protein C1q activates macrophage mitochondrial SARM1 to deplete NAD+ and produce cADPR, triggering NLRC5/NLRP12-PANoptosome formation, PANoptosis, and synovial inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis; targeting this pathway reduces inflammation.

FAcTs on fire: Exploring thermogenesis.

Thermoregulation is a fundamental biological process that allows birds and mammals to maintain a stable internal temperature despite environmental fluctuations, a mechanism shaped by millions of years of evolution. Non-shivering thermogenesis (NST), primarily driven by brown adipose tissue (BAT), plays a central role in thermoregulation by not only helping maintain energy homeostasis but also influencing broader metabolic and physiological processes. Recent research has revealed that BAT thermogenesis is regulated by peripheral hormones and at a central level, with key hypothalamic energy-sens

Renewing the fire: Joseph Babinski.

Joseph Babinski (1857-1932), a French neurologist of Polish origin, was a physician of the Paris hospitals and member of the Academy of Medicine. Two main periods must be distinguished in his scientific activity. Early in his career, Babinski, working as an anatomo-pathologist and his tologist under the direction of Victor Cornil, Alfred Vulpian and Louis Ranvier, reported on several observations of general pathology and neuropathology. After his chief residency under Charcot (from 1885 to 1887), Babinski abandoned his previous interests and became increasingly involved with hysteria. He thus
