Pharmaceuticals and personal care products in water, sediments, aquatic organisms, and fish feeds in the Pearl River Delta: Occurrence, distribution, potential sources, and health risk assessment.

This study investigated the occurrence, distribution, and potential sources of 34 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in water, sediments, aquatic organisms (fish and shellfish), and fish feeds from the mariculture areas of the Pearl River Delta (PRD). The health risk presented by this class of compounds was also assessed in relation to their intake via seafood consumption. Of the 34 PPCPs, a total of 9, 21, 14, and 28 PPCPs were detected in water, sediments, fish feeds, and aquatic organisms, respectively. Trimethoprim, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, and spectinomycin were detected in

The role of 44-methylgambierone in ciguatera fish poisoning: Acute toxicity, production by marine microalgae and its potential as a biomarker for Gambierdiscus spp.

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is prevalent around the tropical and sub-tropical latitudes of the world and impacts many Pacific island communities intrinsically linked to the reef system for sustenance and trade. While the genus Gambierdiscus has been linked with CFP, it is commonly found on tropical reef systems in microalgal assemblages with other genera of toxin-producing, epiphytic and/or benthic dinoflagellates - Amphidinium, Coolia, Fukuyoa, Ostreopsis and Prorocentrum. Identifying a biomarker compound that can be used for the early detection of Gambierdiscus blooms, specifically in a m

Revealing the most contaminated stages and spots of foodborne pathogens and antibiotic resistance along the whole fish production chain in Greek aquaculture.

Aquaculture constitutes a significant reservoir for antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) posing substantial risks to seafood consumers and public health. This study aimed to reveal the most contaminated stages and spots of foodborne pathogens, and ARB along the whole fish production chain in Greece. To reach this aim, samples (water, surfaces, fish feed, and fish) were collected from multiple spots (e.g. surfaces, equipment) of all stages of the entire chain, from farming to packaging, and analyzed for their microbiological and antibiotic resistance status through classical and molecular approa

Levonorgestrel-induced sex reversal in mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi): An effective protocol for all-female production and its aquaculture applications.

This study aimed to develop and evaluate an effective protocol for producing all-female populations of mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi) through levonorgestrel (LNG)-induced sex reversal of genetic females. During the critical sex differentiation window (15-60 days post hatching), administration of 100 mg/kg LNG through prey-mediated delivery induced 100 % sex reversal of genetic females into functional neo-males, as confirmed by histological and molecular analyses. The neo-males exhibited normal testicular development, complete spermatogenesis, and reproductive competence comparable to XY mal

Hypoxia-inducible factor 1α from a high-altitude fish enhances cytoprotection and elevates nitric oxide production in hypoxic environment.

Hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) are master transcription factor regulating hypoxic responses in vertebrates. Species of Schizothoracine, a sub-family of cyprinidae, are highly endemic to the hypoxic Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP). What roles the HIFs play in hypoxic adaptation in the Schizothoracine fish is little known. In this study, the HIF-1α/B gene from Gymnocypris dobula (Gd) was characterized. The predicted protein for Gd-HIF-1α/B contains the main domains (bHLH, PAS, PAC, ODD, N-TAD, and C-TAD). Moreover, a specific mutation that the proline hydroxylation motif (LXXLAP) mutated into Px

Assessment of Enterotoxin Production and Cross-Contamination of Staphylococcus aureus between Food Processing Materials and Ready-To-Eat Cooked Fish Paste.

This study evaluated Staphylococcus aureus growth and subsequent staphylococcal enterotoxin A production in tryptone soy broth and on ready-to-eat cooked fish paste at 12 to 37 °C, as well as cross-contamination between stainless steel, polyethylene, and latex glove at room temperature. A model was developed using Barany and Roberts's growth model, which satisfactorily described the suitable growth of S. aureus with R(2)-adj from 0.94 to 0.99. Except at 12 °C, S. aureus cells in TSB presented a lag time lower (14.64 to 1.65 h), grew faster (0.08 to 0.31 log CFU/h) and produced SEA at lower cel

The role of fish helminth parasites in monitoring metal pollution in aquatic ecosystems: a case study in the world's most productive platinum mining region.

Due to the increasing consumption of platinum (Pt), especially in automobile exhaust catalysts, environmental concentrations of Pt are of emerging concern worldwide. Limited information exists on environmental concentrations, particularly in Pt mining regions, while South Africa is the world's main supplier of Pt. Moreover, other metals are also released as by-products of Pt mining, which might also cause environmental concern. Certain fish parasite taxa have the ability to accumulate metals orders of magnitude higher than their hosts and can be used to reliably detect metals with naturally lo

Production of donor-derived eggs after ovarian germ cell transplantation into the gonads of adult, germ cell-less, triploid hybrid fish†.

In animals, spermatogonial transplantation in sterile adult males is widely developed; however, despite its utility, ovarian germ cell transplantation is not well developed. We previously showed that the interspecific hybrid offspring of sciaenid was a suitable model for germ cell transplantation studies as they have germ cell-less gonads. However, all these gonads have testis-like characteristics. Here, we tested whether triploidization in hybrid embryos could result in germ cell-less ovary development. Gonadal structure dimorphism and sex-specific gene expression patterns were examined in 6-

Native oleaginous yeasts Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Solicoccozyma gelidoterrea: a sustainable biotechnological alternative for lipid production with potential application in diets for farmed fish.

INTRODUCTION: The rapid global expansion of aquaculture has intensified the demand for sustainable and alternative lipid sources for fish feed formulations, driving interest in microbial platforms with specialized metabolic capabilities. Among these, oleaginous yeasts have emerged as promising candidates due to their ability to accumulate substantial intracellular lipid reserves and to modulate fatty acid composition in response to environmental and nutritional cues. METHODS: In this study, the lipid production potential and physiological responses of two native yeast strains isolated from vo

Optimization of Bromelain-Aided Production of Angiotensin I-Converting Enzyme Inhibitory Hydrolysates from Stone Fish Using Response Surface Methodology.

The stone fish is an under-utilized sea cucumber with many nutritional and ethno-medicinal values. This study aimed to establish the conditions for its optimum hydrolysis with bromelain to generate angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory hydrolysates. Response surface methodology (RSM) based on a central composite design was used to model and optimize the degree of hydrolysis (DH) and ACE-inhibitory activity. Process conditions including pH (4-7), temperature (40-70 °C), enzyme/substrate (E/S) ratio (0.5%-2%) and time (30-360 min) were used. A pH of 7.0, temperature of 40 °C, E/S rati

Do low-mercury terrestrial resources subsidize low-mercury growth of stream fish? Differences between species along a productivity gradient.

Low productivity in aquatic ecosystems is associated with reduced individual growth of fish and increased concentrations of methylmercury (MeHg) in fish and their prey. However, many stream-dwelling fish species can use terrestrially-derived food resources, potentially subsidizing growth at low-productivity sites, and, because terrestrial resources have lower MeHg concentrations than aquatic resources, preventing an increase in diet-borne MeHg accumulation. We used a large-scale field study to evaluate relationships among terrestrial subsidy use, growth, and MeHg concentrations in two stream-d

Ability of certain plant extracts traditionally used to treat ciguatera fish poisoning to inhibit nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 macrophages.

AIM OF THE STUDY: Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is an intertropical ichthyosarcotoxism that manifests in complex assortment of symptoms in humans. Ciguatoxins (CTXs), issued from Gambierdicus spp., are causative agents of this intoxication. We have recently demonstrated that a Pacific CTX (P-CTX-1B) strongly modulated iNOS expression, leading to overproduction of nitric oxide (NO) in RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cells. NO produced in large amounts is involved in a wide range of pathophysiological processes. Many traditional remedies are commonly used in the Pacific against CFP. In this context

Six-month feeding of low-dose fish oil decreases vascular expression of high mobility group box1 and receptor for advanced glycation end-products in rat chronic allograft vasculopathy.

Chronic allograft vasculopathy (CAV) is a typical feature of chronic rejection of small bowel transplantations (SBTx). Our previous studies revealed that feeding fish oil, a natural source of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), protected against CAV. The underlying mechanism remains to be clarified. The pathway mediated by the receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) and its ligand, high mobility group box-1 (HMGB1), which may contribute to the pathogenesis of CAV, is potentially regulated by n-3 PUFAs. Using a chronic rejection model of rat SBTx, the present study investigated

Determination of the Synthetic Antioxidant Ethoxyquin and Its Metabolites in Fish and Fishery Products Using Liquid Chromatography-Fluorescence Detection and Stable-Isotope Dilution Analysis-Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry.

The use of the synthetic antioxidant ethoxyquin (1,2-dihydro-6-ethoxy-2,2,4-trimethylquinoline, EQ) as a flame retardant in fish meal transported by sea is required by international authorities to prevent self-ignition. Because of extensive carry-over within the food chain, selective and sensitive analytical methods are required for investigations on human exposure and the safety of EQ and its metabolites. Therefore, a simple, fast, and rugged liquid-chromatography (LC) method was developed for the detection of EQ and its metabolites in fish and fishery products after liquid-liquid extraction
