Mapping encounters between Antarctic krill fishing vessels and air-breathing krill predators using acoustic data from the fishery.

Antarctic krill is a keystone species in the Antarctic marine ecosystem and the target of a growing fishery. Given the ecological importance of krill, concerns have been raised about potential negative impacts of fishing on the Southern Ocean ecosystem. Resource-efficient approaches to fisheries monitoring are particularly valuable in this context due to the high costs associated with data collection in Antarctica. In this study, we trained a segmentation model (U-Net) to extract dives of air-breathing krill predators from more than 30,000 h of active acoustic data collected by three krill fis

DNA analysis of elasmobranch products originating from Bangladesh reveals unregulated elasmobranch fishery and trade on species of global conservation concern.

Trade involving elasmobranch products in Bangladesh is a four-decade-long practice in large scale and there is little understanding of its impact on species composition, population, and subsequent conservation. Capacity for monitoring and identification is lacking in landing and shark processing centres. A rapid survey and collection of tissue samples were performed in three landings and nine shark processing centres between 2016 and 2017 in the south-eastern coastal region of Bangladesh. Sequencing for a 707-bp fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene was used t

Development of the Genus and Species Determination Method for Histamine Producing Bacteria Isolated from Fishery Product with High-Resolution Melting Analysis.

Histamine in foods with a high histidine content may be produced by bacteria with histidine decarboxylase activity. Consumption of food enriched in histamine can produce symptoms of histamine poisoning that include flushing, headache, and urticaria. The number of histamine poisoning cases in Japan has decreased with developments in food hygiene management technology. However, approximately 10 cases are still reported each year. In addition, there have been cases where histamine was detected in the end products, prompting large product recalls. To prevent and identify causes of histamine toxici

Predicting the suitable habitat distribution of greater amberjack using the MaxEnt model with fishery and remote sensing data in the surrounding waters of Taiwan.

The increasing availability of satellite-derived remotely sensed oceanographic data offers significant potential for evaluating changes in habitat suitability driven by oceanographic phenomena and for informing scientific management strategies, particularly when coupled with maximum entropy (MaxEnt) methods. Oceanographic variables, including sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface salinity (SSS), sea surface height (SSH), sea surface chlorophyll-a concentration (CHL), mixed layer depth (MLD), and eddy kinetic energy (EKE), alongside fishery data from Taiwanese fishing vessels, were collect

Why market orientation matters for agriculture and fishery workers? Unravelling the association between households' occupational background and caloric deprivation in India.

BACKGROUND: Developmental policies in low- and middle-income countries pose immense potential within the agriculture sectors to escalate economic growth and development. Almost one-half of the workforces continue to be engaged in agriculture and allied activities with a relatively lower economic contribution than those employed in other sectors. Hence, realizing such potential however requires tremendous scaling up of skill development activities in the sector. Investing in skill development of workers engaged in agricultural and allied activities can potentially display notable value addition

Cranial shape variation in jacarean caimanines (Crocodylia, Alligatoroidea) and its implications in the taxonomic status of extinct species: The case of Melanosuchus fisheri.

Melanosuchus niger (Crocodylia, Alligatoroidea) is one of the six living caimanine species widely distributed throughout the Amazon River basin today. Although there is only one extant species of Melanosuchus, fossil material assigned to this genus, represented by M. fisheri, has been reported from the late Miocene in South America. However, the validity of this taxon has been questioned and a recent investigation indicates that the referred specimen of M. fisheri (MCZ 4336) actually belongs to Globidentosuchus brachyrostris, while those diagnostic characters present in the holotype (MCNC 243)

Capture and discard practises associated with an ornamental fishery affect the metabolic rate and aerobic capacity of three-striped dwarf cichlids Apistogramma trifasciata.

Fishing causes direct removal of individuals from wild populations but can also cause a physiological disturbance in fish that are released or discarded after capture. While sublethal physiological effects of fish capture have been well studied in commercial and recreational fisheries, this issue has been overlooked for the ornamental fish trade, where it is common to capture fish from the wild and discard non-target species. We examined metabolic responses to capture and discard procedures in the three-striped dwarf cichlid Apistogramma trifasciata, a popular Amazonian aquarium species that n

Simultaneous Determination of Aminoglycoside Residues in Livestock and Fishery Products by Phenylboronic Acid Solid-Phase Extraction and Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry.

A rapid and simple method has been developed for simultaneous determinations of the concentrations of nine aminoglycosides (AGs) in livestock and fishery products using phenylboronic acid (PBA) solid-phase extraction (SPE) clean-up. Unlike the widely employed SPE approaches, based on cation-exchange, PBA SPE relies on the reversible formation of covalent bonds with the analytes. The advantage of using PBA lies in the fact that this compound strongly and stably retains analytes, and the pH of the loading solution can be easily adjusted using a high-concentration buffer. The clean-up conditions,

Validation of standard method EN ISO 19343 for the detection and quantification of histamine in fish and fishery products using high-performance liquid chromatography.

In contaminated fish, bacterial decarboxylases produce histamine from histidine, thereby causing scombroid fish poisoning. European Regulation (EC) No 2073/2005 on microbiological criteria for foodstuffs requires using a fully validated, standardized reference HPLC method for detecting and quantifying histamine. After optimizing this reference method for the quantification of histamine in fish muscle, we organized an inter-laboratory study in 2013 across nine laboratories from seven European countries using defined criteria of method performance. The optimized, validated method was standardize

Identification of Environmental Predictors and Their Spatial Heterogeneity for VMS-Derived Fishing Duration in the Argentine Shortfin Squid Fishery Across the Southwest Atlantic Ocean.

Argentine shortfin squid (Illex argentinus) fishing grounds in the Southwest Atlantic extend across the Argentine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and adjacent high seas, where environmental contrasts may lead to spatial heterogeneity. In this study, Vessel Monitoring System data from December 2020 to June 2025 were used to derive fishing duration as an indicator of fishing-ground use intensity. Conventional and derived environmental variables described vertical temperature and salinity differences, surface gradients, and topography. K-means clustering identified fishing-ground units, while CatBo

An optimised method for the rapid analysis of condensed phosphates in fishery and processed marine food products using ion chromatography and microwave sample processing.

Condensed phosphates are deliberately added to the fishery and processed marine food products on purpose to increase the weight of products. However, excessive intake overwhelming bodily homoeostasis can result in phosphate toxicity such as mineral and bone disorders, associated with chronic kidney diseases, and cardiovascular events. Rapid analysis for condensed phosphates is required to detect the illegal adulteration of processed marine products. We optimised an analytical method using ion chromatography for the rapid and selective detection of condensed phosphates in various kinds of fishe

Fin-to-body weight ratios for shark species caught in the southern Gulf of Mexico's artisanal fishery: Insight into CITES enforcement for shark fin trade.

Shark species are among the most vulnerable marine fishes facing impacts from fisheries. To ensure the international fin trade does not threaten their populations, several species have been listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Appendix II. However, the lack of data on fin-to-body weight ratios makes it difficult to accurately estimate the biomass of harvested sharks based on their traded fins and weakens CITES enforcement. This study determines species-specific fin-to-body weight ratios for shark species caught by the artisanal f

Determination of Flunixin and 5-Hydroxy Flunixin Residues in Livestock and Fishery Products Using Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

Flunixin is a veterinary nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agent whose residues have been investigated in their original form within tissues such as muscle and liver. However, flunixin remains in milk as a metabolite, and 5-hydroxy flunixin has been used as the primary marker for its surveillance. This study aimed to develop a quantitative method for detecting flunixin and 5-hydroxy flunixin in milk and to strengthen the monitoring system by applying to other livestock and fishery products. Two different methods were compared, and the target compounds were extracted from milk using an organic sol

[Rapid screening and confirmation of 86 illegally added chemicals in fishery drugs by ultra performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry].

With the rapid expansion of fisheries, one of the most significant limitations to the sustainable development of fisheries in China is the quality and safety of fishery products owing to the abuse of fishery drugs and the use of illegal and/or restricted chemicals in fishery drugs. A range of chemicals that are potential hazards to fishery drugs were selected for screening in this study. A comprehensive analytical method was developed, based on ultra performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS), for the rapid screening of 86 types of illegally a

Monitoring of residual antibacterial agents in animal and fishery products in Tokyo from 2003 to 2019: application and verification of a screening strategy based on microbiological methods.

Residual antibacterial agents in 5909 animal and fishery products in Tokyo, Japan, were investigated over 17 consecutive years (2003-2019). Monitoring of 32 antibacterial agents (lincosamides, macrolides, penicillins, quinorones and tetracyclines) per product was accomplished via two steps: screening (by microbiological methods) and confirmation (by instrumental methods). Microbiological screening methods identified presumptive groups and determined semi-quantitative values. The instrumental methods quantified 81 residues of 11 different antibacterial agents in 72 samples. The screening strate
