The Chinese tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis) holds significant economic importance within the fishing industry along the eastern coasts of China. In recent years, the frequent outbreaks of bacterial diseases have become a common concern as the aquaculture scale expands. The majority of the diseased fish exhibit symptoms such as skin congestion, damage and skin ulceration. As the skin serves as the first line of defense against bacterial infections, establishing a skin cell line for immunological research on Chinese tongue sole's response to bacterial infection is of utmost importance. This research aimed to investigate melatonin rhythms in the pineal organ of two nocturnal fish species, sole and tench, which show high sensitivity to light. Pineal organs were cultured in vitro under an LD (12 h light:12 h dark) cycle to study the daily rhythmicity of melatonin release. In addition, the in vitro culture was performed under conditions of constant darkness (DD) to study the endogenous control of the rhythm. In the pineal organs cultured under an LD cycle, rhythmic melatonin release was evident in both species, with low values observed during the photophase (15.6+/-7.2 and 22.6+

We investigated non-specific responses of turbot spleen- and pronephros-resident adherent cells to spores of fish microsporidians, and the effects of the glucocorticoid dexamethasone (DX) on these responses. On average, 65% of adherent cells from the spleen and pronephros showed esterase activity (as characteristic of macrophages); 32% showed peroxidase activity (as characteristic of neutrophils), and 19% of peroxidase-positive cells were capable of phagocytosing microsporidian spores. A significantly higher proportion of adherent cells showed phagocytic activity when viable spores were the ta

More than 400 isolates from the intestine and the external surface of farmed turbot, as well as from fish food and hatchery water were screened for inhibitory effects against the fish pathogen Vibrio anguillarum HI 11345 and seven other fish pathogens. The bacteria with inhibitory effects were then characterized with regards to their sites of colonization, especially the intestinal regions and sites within each region. No correlations between the different biochemical phena, site of colonization and inhibitory effect could be found. The potential of seven of these strains for adhesion to intes

Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) are a class of protein kinases that regulate various physiological processes, and play a crucial role in maintaining the osmotic equilibrium of fish. The objective of this study was to identify and characterize the mapk family genes in cobia (Rachycentron canadum) and examine their expression profiles under different low salinity stress regimes (acute: from 30‰ to 10‰ in 1 h, sub-chronic: from 30‰ to 10‰ over 4 d). A total of 12 cobia mapk genes (Rcmapks) were identified and cloned, including six erk subfamily genes (Rcmapk1/3/4/6/7/15), three jnk subf

Based on 1572 re-sequenced Chinese tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis), we investigated the accuracy of four genomic methods at predicting genomic estimated breeding values (GEBVs) of Vibrio harveyi resistance in C. semilaevis when SNPs varying from 500 to 500 k. All methods outperformed the pedigree-based best linear unbiased prediction when SNPs reached 50 k or more. Then, we developed an SNP array "Solechip No.1" for C. semilaevis breeding using the Affymetrix Axiom technology. This array contains 38,295 SNPs with an average of 10.5 kb inter-spacing between two adjacent SNPs. We selected 4

Water temperature is an important factor for immune responses in poikilothermic fish. Especially, it has been known that adaptive immunity is more sensitive to temperature than innate immunity in fish. The optimal temperature for olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) culture is known between 20 and 25 °C, and there are several papers reporting the low or no effectiveness of inactivated vaccines in olive flounder kept at low water temperatures. Previously, we had reported that a vaccine based on single-cycle viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) that was modified to produce the transmembr

Light is a key environmental factor that synchronizes various life stages from embryo development to sexual maturation in fish. For turbot, light spectra have the most influence at the larval and juvenile stages. In the current study, differences in the development of embryos and the performance of newly hatched turbot larvae exposed to five different spectra: full spectrum (LDF), blue (LDB, peak at 450 nm), green (LDG, peak at 533 nm), orange (LDO, peak at 595 nm) and red (LDR, peak at 629 nm), were examined. At 62.8 h post fertilization, a higher number of embryos exposed to short-wavelength

Turbot specimens were kept at three temperatures (T s ): warm (W) (21-22 °C), ambient (A) (17-18 °C) and cold (C) (13-14 °C) during the larval and early postlarval stages. At 90 days posthatching (dph), all of them were transferred to ambient T until 190 dph. At 2-3 dph, the specimens showed a monolayer of red muscle and immature white fibres; external or dermomyotome cells (presumptive myogenic cells) were observed on the surface of the red muscle. In the following stages, many myogenic cells and presumptive myogenic precursors were observed within the myotome, presumably derived of the dermo

Turbot Scophthalmus maximus (Linnaeus, 1758) is a fish belonging to the Pleuronectiformes order. It is commonly observed in waters of the northern Atlantic, and also in the Baltic Sea. As an economically significant species, it is fished on an industrial scale, and also farmed in some European countries. Seventy-two turbots from the Gulf of Gdańsk (26th ICES zone) were examined for parasite presence in the years 2010-2012. The study revealed the presence of the tapeworm Bothriocephalus scorpii (Müller, 1776) and acanthocephalan Corynosoma semerme (Forssell, 1904). The overall (both parasites)

The effect of high dietary levels of arachidonic acid (ARA) on the eye migration and cranial bone remodelling processes in Senegalese sole Solea senegalensis early juveniles (age: 50 days post hatch) was evaluated by means of geometric morphometric analysis and alizarin red staining of cranial skeletal elements. The incidence of normally pigmented fish fed the control diet was 99·1 ± 0·3% (mean ± s.e.), whereas it was only 18·7 ± 7·5% for those fed high levels of ARA (ARA-H). The frequency of cranial deformities was significantly higher in fish fed ARA-H (95·1 ± 1·5%) than in those fed the con

A new species of Chondracanthidae (Copepoda: Cyclopoida), Heterochondria orientalis sp. n., is described based on specimens of both sexes collected from the gill rakers and the inner side of the operculum of the many-banded sole, Zebrias fasciatus (Basilewsky), from the Yellow Sea, Korea. The new species resembles most closely H. zebriae (Ho, Kim et Kuman, 2000), but can be distinguished from this species and other congeners by the shape of the trunk and length of the antenna, the number of teeth on the mandible and the terminal process of the maxilla, and the structure of the male antennule a

The influence of cholecystokinin-octapeptide on the bioelectrical features of gastro-intestinal motility in sea-water fish (plaice) was investigated in chronic experiments. I. v. or intracerebral application of the peptide led to inhibition of the stomach cardia motor activity, to intensification and sparsity of the tonic and peristaltic contractions of the stomach pyloric part, and to an increase in the intestine fore-part activity. Vagotomy prevented the effect of intracerebral application of cholecystokinin. Atropine prevented this effect of cholecystokinin irrespective of the mode of its a

Increased carbon dioxide (CO2) in the ocean is changing seawater chemistry. Behavioural alterations in CO2 exposed fish have been linked to changes in the central nervous system (CNS). However, we hypothesise that receptor cells in direct contact with the environment are more susceptible to changes in water chemistry than the CNS. Electrophysiology, histology, and transcriptomics were used to explore the effect of exposure to CO2 acidified water on the olfactory epithelium (OE) of the Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis). The upper and lower OE of this flatfish detect different odorants and ar

Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) characterized by different body size between females and males have been reported in various animals. Gonadectomy experiments have implied important regulatory roles of the gonad in SSD. Among multiple factors from the gonad, TGF-β superfamily (especially BMP/GDF family) attracted our interest due to its pleiotropy in growth and reproduction regulations. Thus, whether BMP/GDF family members serve as crucial regulators for SSD was studied in a typically female-biased SSD flatfish named Chinese tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis). Firstly, a total of 26 BMP/GDF fami

After a meal, dogfish exhibit a metabolic alkalosis in the bloodstream and a marked excretion of basic equivalents across the gills to the external seawater. We used the H(+), K(+)-ATPase pump inhibitor omeprazole to determine whether these post-prandial alkaline tide events were linked to secretion of H(+) (accompanied by Cl(-)) in the stomach. Sharks were fitted with indwelling stomach tubes for pretreatment with omeprazole (five doses of 5 mg omeprazole per kilogram over 48 h) or comparable volumes of vehicle (saline containing 2% DMSO) and for sampling of gastric chyme. Fish were then fed

Studies on how flatfish cardiovascular function responds to environmental challenges are limited, and have largely relied upon indirect methodologies (i.e. Fick principle). Thus, we measured dorsal aortic blood pressure (P(DA)) and cardiac function in 8 and 15 degrees C-acclimated flounder exposed to graded hypoxia, and in 8 degrees C-acclimated fish exposed to an acute temperature increase to their critical thermal maximum (CTM). The extent of bradycardia in 8 degrees C-acclimated fish (decrease in heart rate of 41%) was consistent with that observed for other teleosts, as was this species' C

Anthelmintics are veterinary drugs used to treat or prevent diseases in livestock and fishery products. However, their residues in animal-derived foods pose potential risks to human health. In Korea, maximum residue limits (MRLs) have been established to regulate such residues; however, for certain substances, including niclosamide, a widely used anthelmintic, only qualitative analytical methods are available, limiting effective residue monitoring. This study developed a multiresidue quantitative analytical method for 18 anthelmintic compounds. Method validation was conducted in accordance wit

IgT is a specific Ig isotype in teleosts, which plays extremely important roles in the mucosal immunity of fish. In the present study, the membrane-bound and secretory IgT of the half-smooth tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis) were identified for the first time. The V-D-J-C structure of two forms of csIgT are translated by the same Cτ gene, and the secretory tail and transmembrane domain were encoded through alternative splicing at the 3' end of the Cτ4. The CH regions of csIgT had high similarity with that of other flatfish (P. olivaceus and S. maximus). In healthy C. semilaevis, sIgT and mI
