Infections caused by rare micro-organisms are the subject of research, as researchers are encouraged to find the necessary health measures to prevent and treat the disease, as well as the search for new insights into human-microbial interactions. This report describes the case of a newborn boy diagnosed with hydrocephalus and myelomeningocele who developed ventriculitis and sepsis from resistant Empedobacter brevis. This case highlights the unexpected identification of this bacterium in the cerebrospinal fluid and its multi-resistant pattern, which was crucial for proper therapeutic management

The outbreak of Riemerella anatipestifer (RA) infection has been confirmed in meat-type domestic ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) for the first time in 27 years in Japan. In January 2014, increased mortality in a 14- to 21-day-old duck flock was reported to veterinary officials by the owner. The affected ducks exhibited reduced movement, ataxia and dorsal recumbency with leg paddling. Pathological findings were typical for an RA infection. Fibrinous and heterophilic pericarditis, airsacculitis, perihepatitis, ventriculitis and meningitis were observed. The bacterial isolate from duck organs was iden

BACKGROUND: Elizabethkingia anophelis is an emerging multidrug-resistant pathogen associated with severe neonatal infections and high mortality. Due to its intrinsic resistance to multiple antibiotics, including β-lactams, optimal antimicrobial therapy remains challenging. We report a rare case of neonatal meningitis complicated by brain abscess caused by piperacillin-tazobactam-resistant Elizabethkingia anophelis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A full-term neonate presented with fever and poor responsiveness on day 15 after birth. Initial empirical antibiotic therapy was ineffective. Blood culture confi

BACKGROUND: Bergeyella porcorum is a newly identified bacterium that has an ambiguous relationship with pneumonia in pigs. However, few studies have adequately characterized this species.
RESULTS: In this study, we analyzed the morphological, physiological, and genomic characteristics of the newly identified B. porcorum sp. nov. strain QD2021 isolated from pigs. The complete genome sequence of the B. porcorum QD2021 strain consists of a single circular chromosome (2,271,736 bp, 38.51% G + C content), which encodes 2,578 genes. One plasmid with a size of 70,040 bp was detected. A total of 121

Elizabethkingia meningoseptica, a gram negative bacillus ubiquitous in the hospital environment, is known to infrequently cause serious neonatal infections, particularly meningitis which is associated with high mortality and neuromorbidity in survivors. The authors describe a healthy term newborn with no apparent risk factors who developed Elizabethkingia meningoseptica sepsis and meningitis on day 6 of life. Diagnosis could be established only after a week of the illness by which time the baby developed refractory status epilepticus, ventriculitis and hydrocephalus. The isolate was susceptibl

We report the isolation and characterization of two Elizabethkingia anophelis strains (OSUVM-1 and OSUVM-2) isolated from sources associated with horses in Oklahoma. Both strains appeared susceptible to fluoroquinolones and demonstrated high MICs to all cell wall active antimicrobials including vancomycin, along with aminoglycosides, fusidic acid, chloramphenicol, and tetracycline. Typical of the Elizabethkingia, both draft genomes contained multiple copies of β-lactamase genes as well as genes predicted to function in antimicrobial efflux. Phylogenetic analysis of the draft genomes revealed t

BACKGROUND: The dysbiosis of the intestinal microbiome relates to the pathogenesis of Crohn's disease (CD). Previous studies have focused on microbiota diversity and composition in CD patients in comparison with healthy individuals. Nonetheless, intestinal flora varies greatly among individuals. This study aimed to characterize the bacterial microbiome profiles of inflamed mucosa in comparison with those of noninflamed mucosa from Crohn's disease patients.
METHODS: Sequencing of 16S rDNA V4 was used to identify the bacterial microbiome profiles of twelve pairs of inflamed and noninflamed muco

Gastrointestinal symptoms are common in the early-stage Parkinson's disease (PD), but its potential pathogenesis remains unclear. Therefore, in the present study, we used the 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry-based metabolomics to investigate the alterations of gut microbiome and serum amino acid levels in the early-stage PD mice model induced with rotenone. The results demonstrated that the microbial taxa at phylum, family and genus levels remarkably altered in rotenone-induced mice relative to vehicle-induced mice. The rotenone-induced mi

Salt marshes are ecologically important ecosystems with dynamic nutrient exchange between land and sea. Their zonation along an elevation gradient supports specific communities exhibiting successional patterns. Previous studies have mainly focused on individual domains, with limited attempts to explore interdependencies of community assemblies across domains. Here, we investigated the co-occurrence of prokaryotes and microeukaryotes in natural salt marsh sediments and experimental islands placed in the adjacent tidal flat. The islands contained originally bare and transplanted plots at three d

INTRODUCTION: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory condition often associated with desquamative gingivitis (DG). The oral microbiome's role in OLP and DG (OLP-DG) is gaining recognition, but prior 16S rRNA studies lacked taxonomic resolution. This study introduced shotgun metagenomic sequencing to thoroughly compare the supragingival and subgingival plaque microbiomes of individuals with and without OLP-DG.
METHODS: Twenty-seven participants (9 OLP-DG, 18 non-OLP) were recruited. Supra- and subgingival plaque samples were collected separately. Genomic DNA was analyzed using shot

Seven drug-resistant Elizabethkingia anophelis isolates were obtained from inpatients in three medical settings in Myanmar between February 2017 and January 2021. All isolates were resistant to β-lactams and colistin. Among these, four isolates were resistant to amikacin with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ≥64 µg ml-1. Six of the seven isolates harboured genes encoding intrinsic β-lactamases, including bla B, bla CME and bla GOB, whereas one isolate harboured bla B, bla CME and an incomplete bla GOB gene. Phylogenetic analysis based on whole-genome sequences revealed that several E.

INTRODUCTION: Elizabethkingia meningoseptica is a rare but well-recognised cause of neonatal meningitis. Reported outbreaks have involved very few cases. We describe the management and outcome of a relatively large outbreak of E.meningoseptica neonatal meningitis
METHODOLOGY: From August 2002 to December 2003, eight cases of meningitis caused by E. meningoseptica occurred among babies admitted to the neonatal ward of Jawarhlal Nehru hospital, Mauritius. In all cases, the organism was isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid. Infection control measures were re-emphasized after each case and envir

Understanding disease dynamics in wild fish populations is essential for effective conservation and fisheries management, yet diagnosing marine diseases in wild organisms is challenging. Tenacibaculosis, a bacterial disease caused by Tenacibaculum spp., is emblematic of this challenge, having been widely reported in farmed Atlantic (Salmo salar) and Chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) salmon, but never confirmed in any species of wild Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.). Here, we present the first report of tenacibaculosis in wild-caught Pacific salmon. During holding experiments conducted with
