Sustainable production of bacterial flocculants by nylon-6,6 microplastics hydrolysate utilizing Brucella intermedia ZL-06.

Nylon-6,6 microplastics (NMPs) in aquatic systems have emerged as potential contaminants to the global environment and have garnered immense consideration over the years. Unfortunately, there is currently no efficient method available to eliminate NMPs from sewage. This study aims to address this issue by isolating Brucella intermedia ZL-06, a bacterium capable of producing a bacterial polysaccharide-based flocculant (PBF). The PBF generated from this bacterium shows promising efficacy in effectively flocculating NMPs. Subsequently, the precipitated flocs (NMPs + PBF) were utilized as sustaina

Preparation of Heavy Metal Trapping Flocculant Polyacrylamide-Glutathione and Its Application for Cadmium Removal from Water.

In this study, a heavy metal trapping gel with multiple ligand groups was prepared for the first time using response surface methodology. The gel was produced by condensing and grafting glutathione as a grafting monomer onto the main polyacrylamide chain, based on the Mannich reaction mechanism with formaldehyde. FTIR, SEM, TG-DSC, and zeta potentials were used to characterize the gel. The results demonstrated that the gel was morphologically folded and porous, with a net-like structure, which enhanced its net trapping and sweeping abilities, and that glutathione was used to provide sulfhydryl

Substrate-dependent attenuation of antibiotic and metal resistance genes during acidogenic fermentation of titanium-flocculated sludge.

Titanium-based coagulation enables efficient wastewater purification and sludge recovery, yet the fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and metal resistance genes (MRGs) during downstream sludge valorization remains insufficiently understood. Here, we investigated how food waste-derived substrates affected fermentation performance and ARGs/MRGs profiles during 7-day acidogenic co-fermentation of Ti-flocculated sludge. Substrate composition resulted in distinct fermentation characteristics and resistome responses. Compared with refractory fiber-rich substrates, readily hydrolysable starch

Filter substrate comparison and biodegradable flocculant dosing for a compact constructed wetland treating combined sewer overflow.

Combined sewer overflows (CSO) are a significant source of urban water pollution, with sediments originating from sewers contributing substantial loads of organic matter, nutrients, and particulate-associated contaminants to receiving waters. In Germany, constructed wetlands for CSO treatment (CSOCWs) are well-established, yet their large surface area limits their implementation in urban areas. The present study investigates the potential of compact CSOCWs, operated at doubled flow rate, with tailored filter substrates and the addition of biopolymers to enhance treatment performance. A series

One-step removal of free and complexed heavy metals using a biomass-derived amphiphilic network flocculant.

Conventional flocculation technologies are ineffective at removing dissolved heavy metal ions and their stable organic complexes from wastewater, often requiring costly multi-step downstream processes. Herein, a fully biomass-derived amphiphilic network flocculant (BNF) was developed using kraft lignin (hydrophobic segment) and tannic acid (hydrophilic segment) as building blocks, crosslinked by thiosemicarbazide and formaldehyde. This rationally designed network integrates abundant chelating sites and tunable amphiphilicity, enabling efficient capture of both free and complexed heavy metals.

Multi-interface interaction mechanism of pulp reject-based flocculants for the removal of antibiotics and its combined pollutants.

The efficient removal of antibiotics and its combined pollutants is essential for aquatic environment and human health. In this study, a lignin-based organic flocculant named PRL-VAc-DMC was synthesized using pulp reject as the raw material, with vinyl acetate (VAc) and methacryloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC) as the grafting monomers. A series of modern characterization methods were used to confirm the successful preparation of PRL-VAc-DMC and elucidate its polymerization mechanism. It was found that the Ph-OH group and its contiguous carbon atoms of lignin served as the primary act

Management of late-onset flocculent after-cataract with capsular bag lavage and posterior continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis.

We describe our technique for the management of late-onset liquefied after-cataract (LAC) to ensure long-term visual axis clarity. The densely adherent anterior capsular rim over the intraocular lens (IOL) optic was released with the help of microvitreoretinal blade, and multiple relaxing radial incisions were made on the capsular rim to facilitate easy access to the capsular bag. A thorough capsular bag lavage was performed with the help of bimanual irrigation-aspiration. Posterior continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis (PCCC) was performed after complete aspiration of fluid after-cataract to p

[Treatment of simulated produced wastewater from polymer flooding in oil production using dithiocarbamate-type flocculant].

A dithiocarbamate flocculant, DTC (T403), was prepared by the reaction of amine-terminated polyoxypropane-ether compound known as Jeffamine-T403 and carbon disulfide in alkaline solution. The oil removal efficiency of DTC (T403) for simulated produced wastewater from polymer flooding in oil production was studied by Jar-test. The effect of the dosage of DTC (T403), hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM), Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions, and pH on the oil removal efficiency of DTC (T403) was investigated. The results showed that the chelate polymer formed by DTC (T403) and Fe2+ ion has good oil removal performanc

Quaternized chitosan-coordinated metal-azolate framework: Core-bridge-shell composite for electrostatic flocculation and long-term Microcystis aeruginosa inhibition.

Harmful algal blooms dominated by Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) threaten aquatic ecosystems and public health. Traditional treatment methods had limitations of temporary effects or slow response. To address these issues, this study designed a multifunctional CTA-CS/M composite with flocculation and long-term algal inhibition, which constructed "metal-azolate frameworks (M) core - chitosan (CS) bridge - 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride (CTA) shell" hierarchical structure constructed via CS/M coordination and covalent grafting of CTA onto CS. CTA-CS/M was systematical

Effects of powdered activated carbon on the coagulation-flocculation process in humic acid and humic acid-kaolin water treatment.

The addition of powdered activated carbon (PAC) to remove micropollutants is a commonly used technology to improve drinking water quality. However, the effects of PAC dosing strategy on the coagulation-flocculation process of water treatment have not been well understood, especially for water with low amounts of inorganic particles. Therefore, the current research aimed to comprehensively study the effects of simultaneous addition of PAC and aluminum sulfate (AS) coagulants (denoted as PAC-AS) or adding PAC 2 h before coagulation (denoted as PAC2h-AS) on the coagulation behavior in humic acid

Photo-flocculation of microbial mat extracellular polymeric substances and their transformation into transparent exopolymer particles: Chemical and spectroscopic evidences.

Upon exposure to sunlight extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were partially transformed into transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) and unstable flocs of different sizes without the addition of any precursors. Parallel factor (PARAFAC) modelling of the sample fluorescence spectra identified humic-like and protein-like or tyrosine-like components in both untreated and irradiated EPS samples. After 58 hours of solar irradiation, humic-like substances were entirely decomposed, while the regenerated protein-like substance from EPS was the key component in the irradiated samples. Degradation

Valorization of pulp reject into green flocculant for antibiotic wastewater: Performance, interfacial interaction mechanisms, and life cycle assessment.

The structural heterogeneity of natural biomass limits the rational design of bio-based flocculants for efficient antibiotic removal. To address this challenge and promote industrial waste valorization, a pulp reject-based flocculant (PRBF) was synthesized by activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization. This controlled strategy converted pulp reject into a polymer with well-defined branched architecture and narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw = 3.97 × 105 g/mol, PDI = 1.64). PRBF markedly outperformed conventional coagulants in removing representative
