Comparison of susceptibility to motion sickness during rotation at 30 rpm in the earth-horizontal, 10 degrees head-up, and 10 degrees head-down positions.

Normal persons rotated about an Earth-horizontal axis vary in their susceptibility to motion sickness. The purpose of this experiment was to measure, intraindividual differences in susceptibility in 12 subjects when rotated 10 degrees head up and 10 degrees head down as well as in the horizontal position. Subjects assumed the test-position 60 min prior to rotation, thus providing an opportunity for translocation of body fluids. Physiological and psychophysical measurements were conducted throughout the experiment. There were no intraindividual differences in susceptibility to motion sickness i

Response of Pituitary-Thyroid Axis to a Short-Term Shift in Deuterium Content in the Body.

We studied functional changes in rat pituitary-thyroid axis after a short-term shift in deuterium body content. Male Wistar rats consumed deuterium-enriched (500,000 ppm) or deuterium-depleted water (10 ppm) for 24 h. Rats of both experimental groups demonstrated elevated concentration of bound with transport proteins thyroxine and reduced level of thyroid-stimulating hormone in serum. No changes in the rate of thyroxine conversion to triiodothyronine were found. Thus, both the increase and reduction of deuterium body content produced similar changes in the function of the pituitary-thyroid ax

[Ways of improving the efficacy of preoperative preparation in patients with acute intestinal obstruction].

The comparative assessment of preoperative fluid therapy was made in 56 patients with acute intestinal obstruction. Parameters of central hemodynamics, the intra-abdominal pressure and water sectors of organism were investigated. The fluid therapy was conducted during 3 hours and included Tetraspan and Sterofundin on average 615 ml and 1585 ml, respectively. It was shown, that the fluid therapy facilitated to the elimination of water-electrolytic and hemodynamic shifts and to some extent it improved the outcomes of surgical treatment.

Addressing the Barriers to Bioimpedance Spectroscopy Use in Major Burns: Alternate Electrode Placement.

Bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) is a method used to assess body composition and fluid distribution. As a technology for measurement of fluid shifts during acute burn resuscitation, there are potential barriers to its use due to the location of wounds. This study aimed to determine whether alternate electrode positions were a suitable alternative compared to standardized (manufacturer) positions in moderate to large size burns for the measurement of BIS resistance and fluid changes. BIS measurements were collected in standard and alternate electrode placements and in an open wound and Acticoat™

Dynamics of the pulpo-dentin complex.

Dentin has a relatively high water content due to its tubular structure. Once dentin is exposed, this intratubular water is free to move in response to thermal, osmotic, evaporative, or tactile stimuli. Fluid shifts across dentin are thought to cause sufficient shear forces on odontoblasts, nerve endings, nearby fibroblasts, and blood vessels to cause significant mechanical irritation, disruption, or damage, depending on the magnitude of the fluid shift. Even in the absence of fluid shifts, the water-filled tubules provide diffusion channels for noxious (i.e., bacterial products) substances wh

Interstitial carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity in brain is attributable to membrane-bound CA type IV.

We tested the hypothesis that extracellular membrane-bound carbonic anhydrase (CA) type IV is responsible for the regulation of interstitial pH (pH(o)) transients in brain. Rat hippocampal slices were incubated in phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C (PI-PLC), which cleaves the link of CA IV to the external face of plasma membranes. Then evoked alkaline pH(o) shifts were studied in a recording chamber, using pH microelectrodes. Incubation fluid was saved for later analysis. The ability to buffer a rapid alkaline load was reduced markedly in PI-PLC-treated tissue as compared with adjac

Renal fluid and acid/base balance during refeeding in restrictive eating disorders.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Fluid shifts have been ascribed to central diabetes insipidus in patients with anorexia nervosa hospitalized for refeeding. Recent data, however, suggest that vasopressin production is not dysregulated in this population. Our objective was to describe the trajectory of fluid imbalances in relationship to kidney function, electrolyte disturbances, and acid/base balance during refeeding. METHODS: A retrospective review of daily fluid balance and biochemical values was performed in 70 sequential unique patients admitted to University of California at Los Angeles Hospit

Perioperative Fluid Management.

The medical complexity of the geriatric patients has been steadily rising. Still, as outcomes of surgical procedures in the older adults are improving, centers are pushing boundaries. There is also a growing appreciation of the importance of perioperative fluid management on postoperative outcomes, especially in the older adults. Optimal fluid management in this cohort is challenging due to the combination of age-related physiological changes in organ function, increased comorbid burden, and larger fluid shifts during more complex surgical procedures. The current state-of-the-art approach to f

Contrasting effects of lower body positive pressure on upper airways resistance and partial pressure of carbon dioxide in men with heart failure and obstructive or central sleep apnea.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to test the effects of rostral fluid displacement from the legs on transpharyngeal resistance (Rph), minute volume of ventilation (Vmin), and partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PCO2) in men with heart failure (HF) and either obstructive (OSA) or central sleep apnea (CSA). BACKGROUND: Overnight rostral fluid shift relates to severity of OSA and CSA in men with HF. Rostral fluid displacement may facilitate OSA if it shifts into the neck and increases Rph, because pharyngeal obstruction causes OSA. Rostral fluid displacement may also facilitate CSA if it shifts int

Hyponatremia in distance runners: fluid and sodium balance during exercise.

Since its first description in 1985, two opposing theories have evolved to explain the etiology of symptomatic hyponatremia of exercise. The first holds that the condition occurs only in athletes who lose both water and sodium during exercise, and fail to fully replace their sodium losses. The second theory holds that the symptomatic form of this condition occurs in athletes who generate a whole body fluid overload as a result of an excessive fluid intake during prolonged exercise. It is argued that the promotion of the idea that athletes should drink as much as possible during exercise has pr

PURPOSE: To determine whether athletes who had previously developed hyponatremia during an ultradistance triathlon show an impaired ability to excrete a large fluid load compared with athletes who had completed the same race without developing hyponatremia. METHODS: Six athletes who had developed hyponatremia ([Na] < 135 mmol x L(-1)) in the 1997 Ironman Triathlon (study cases) were compared with six athletes who completed the same race without hyponatremia (controls). All participants consumed 3.4 L of water over 2 h at rest. Weight, urine output, urine electrolytes, serum [Na(+)], hemoglobi

The involvement of cerebrovascular reactivity in pathogenesis of space motion sickness.

The aim of the presented work is to investigate the mechanisms of involvement of cerebral circulation in pathogenesis of space motion sickness. In experiments on chronic rabbits the 2-hours rocking and antiorthostasis served as a model of influences of the zero-gravity conditions intracranial hemo- and liquorodynamics. Cerebravascular reactivity was evaluated as a response of cerebral blood flow and intracerebral rheoencephalography to functional loads (photostimulation, CO2-inhalation, Stookey test). Shifts of water balance in the brain tissue has been assessed by means of three-frequency bra

The effect of fluid overload by saline infusion on heart rate variability in men during sleep.

Fluid shift from the legs and into the neck during sleep has been shown to increase tissue pressure around the upper airway and increase sleep apnea severity. Recently, acute fluid overload via saline infusion during sleep was shown to increase sleep apnea severity in an older men (≥ 40 years of age) but not the younger men (<;40 years of age). The purpose of this study was to estimate the changes in the autonomic nervous system response to saline infusion in the younger and older men using well studied time- and frequency domain heart rate variability metrics (HRV). Eighteen healthy men (10 i

Spontaneous Conception During Ovarian Stimulation Complicated by Severe Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) With Atypical β-Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (β-hCG) Trends: A Case Report.

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a known complication of ovarian stimulation and may complicate the interpretation of β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) in early pregnancy. Importantly, pregnancy can still occur during ovarian stimulation, and in this setting, ectopic pregnancy must be carefully excluded, given the potential for tubal dysfunction related to fluid shifts, increasing diagnostic uncertainty. We present a 28-year-old woman who developed severe OHSS following controlled ovarian stimulation, in whom spontaneous conception occurred prior to planned intrauterine insemin

A critical assessment of fluid requirements in gastroschisis.

This report critically evaluates the fluid requirements of 30 infants with gastroschisis. Fluid requirements were unrelated to gestational age, birth weight, or type of repair. Twenty-five percent of the fluid was colloid needed to restore intravascular volume and oncotic pressure, the balance consisting of Ringer's lactate solution. These data support the conclusion that the fluid requirements of the newborn with gastroschisis are significantly increased over those of the normal neonate. This is a reflection of antenatal peritonitis, third space fluid shifts and loss of water and electrolytes

Fluid Redistribution in Sleep Apnea: Therapeutic Implications in Edematous States.

Sleep apnea (SA), a condition associated with increased cardiovascular risk, has been traditionally associated with obesity and aging. However, in patients with fluid-retaining states, such as congestive heart failure and end-stage renal disease, both prevalence and severity of SA are increased. Recently, fluid shift has been recognized to play an important role in the pathophysiology of SA, since the fluid retained in the legs during the day shifts rostrally while recumbent, leading to edema of upper airways. Such simple physics, observed even in healthy individuals, has great impact in patie

Detection of hysteroscopic fluid in the pouch of Douglas: a prospective cohort study about the predictability of bilateral tubal occlusion.

PURPOSE: To determine whether an increase in cul de sac (CDS) fluid after hysteroscopy is predictive of tubal patency. METHODS: In a prospective clinical cohort study, 115 subfertile women undergoing laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery at the Medical University of Vienna were invited to participate. The primary outcome was determining whether an increase in fluid in the pouch of Douglas was reflective of unilateral or bilateral tubal patency. Vaginal sonography before and after hysteroscopy was performed to detect fluid in the pouch of Douglas, directly followed by laparoscopy with chromop

Cocaine modulates pathways for photic and nonphotic entrainment of the mammalian SCN circadian clock.

Cocaine abuse is highly disruptive to circadian physiological and behavioral rhythms. The present study was undertaken to determine whether such effects are manifest through actions on critical photic and nonphotic regulatory pathways in the master circadian clock of the mouse suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Impairment of SCN photic signaling by systemic (intraperitoneal) cocaine injection was evidenced by strong (60%) attenuation of light-induced phase-delay shifts of circadian locomotor activity during the early night. A nonphotic action of cocaine was apparent from its induction of 1-h circa
