BACKGROUND: Fluorescein angiography has been fundamental for the understanding and description of vascular disorders affecting the retina and choroid. The aim of this report is to assess the early anatomic retinal changes visible with angiography, and their relation with the clinical findings of retinopathy of prematurity.
METHODS: Ten babies were included in the study, the initial examination being at 2 weeks after birth. Two cycles of tropicamide 0.8 % and phenylephrine 5 % eye drops were instilled into both eyes 30 min before examination. A RetCam II was used to obtain digital retinal imag

PURPOSE: To describe ultra-widefield fluorescein angiography (UWFA) findings in eyes with white without pressure (WWOP) and in eyes without any obvious peripheral chorioretinal disease, and to determine if a difference exists between these two groups.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 379 eyes undergoing diagnostic UWFA using the Optos 200Tx imaging system. Eyes were excluded if the quality of the color photograph or UWFA prevented reliable evaluation. Eyes were also excluded if there was any evidence of peripheral retinal or choroidal disease, which was thought to have an effect on UWFA (eg

The authors present the case of a 6-month-old female infant with a known diagnosis of incontinentia pigmenti with a normal examination by indirect ophthalmoscopy. However, fluorescein angiography revealed vascular abnormalities that were not detected by indirect ophthalmoscopy. Follow-up examination revealed progressive vascular changes that again were only detectable by fluorescein angiography. Because vision loss can cause significant morbidity in incontinentia pigmenti, the use of fluorescein angiography as an adjunctive tool with exams under anesthesia may provide invaluable information in

BACKGROUND: Fluorescein-enhanced autofluorescence thoracoscopy (FEAT) reveals regions of abnormal fluorescence in patients with primary spontaneous pneumothorax and in normal subjects. Some of these lesions are undetectable by white light thoracoscopy and it has been hypothesized that they represent underlying pleural and/or parenchymal abnormalities.
OBJECTIVES: In order to standardize and evaluate this novel technique, we developed an animal model.
METHODS: Six pigs underwent thoracoscopy after the inhalation of nebulized sodium fluorescein by either volume-controlled mechanical ventilatio

CASE REPORT: The ophthalmic examination and results of fluorescein angiography using Retcam II are described in a patient with Incontinentia Pigmenti (IP).
DISCUSSION: Angiography fluorescein is extremely valuable in detecting vascular lesions that were invisible with ordinary ophthalmoscopy. Retcam II allows documentation of these lesions which is very useful for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of this disease (Arch Soc Esp Oftalmol 2009; 84: 529-532).

Cerebrospinal fluid leak (CSF), clinical sign of a dural lesion of the skull base, is a relatively rare event that can present with a variety of symptoms. Every craniosinus fistula should be considered a serious, potentially life-threatening situation (even those cases with hidden CSF leak). Reports of experience concerning diagnosis and treatment of craniosinus fistulae have appeared in the Literature. In the last few years, the endoscopic nasal approach is proving effective as it makes diagnosis much easier and is the least invasive surgical approach, with the greatest percentage of success.

Sodium fluorescein (SF) is widely used to assess chorioretinal disorders. Adverse reactions are well documented but the underlying mechanism is still uncertain. The aim of this study was the evaluation of skin testing to predict SF reaction, the identification of possible predisposing factors, and the objective record of the reported reactions. All patients with adequate indication for SF angiography (SFA) during an 18-month period were evaluated as follows: (a) detailed personal history of atopy, diabetes, previous SFA, and/or diagnostic procedures with radiocontrast media (RCM) and possible

OBJECTIVES: Assessment of perilymphatic fistulas remains a diagnostic problem. Because of a lack of reliable clinical tests, exploratory tympanotomy is necessary to detect membrane leaks in the middle ear. To improve objectivity in the intraoperative visualization of perilymphatic fistulas, we used intrathecal fluorescein for perilymph staining to increase the sensitivity and specificity of diagnosis of perilymphatic fistulas.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study in the setting of a tertiary, referral, and academic center.
METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with suspected traumatic, idiopathic, iatro

The small intestinal damage induced by the methotrexate (MTX) treatment results in malabsorption and diarrhea. The fluoresceinated methotrexate (F-MTX) may possibly be useful to study such effects of MTX on the small intestine. The purpose of this study is to characterize the transport of F-MTX in the small intestine in order to use it as a membrane transport and cellular marker of MTX. The transport of F-MTX in the rat small intestine (jejunum) was examined in the in vitro everted segments of the intestine. The uptake was pH-dependent and showed a maximal effect at pH 6.0, which was the same

Interpretation of retinal angiographic studies has heretofore been largely qualitative. The temporal properties associated with fluorescein fluorescence of normal and pathologic fundus features are quantified to potentiate pixel assignment and fundus feature quantitation for clinical studies where precise image metrology is vital. Fluorescein angiography studies were digitized, and temporally sequential images were spatially registered with polynomial warping algorithms, allowing for the construction of a three-dimensional angiogram vector. Temporal profiles through spatially registered, tempo

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder (prevalence 1:37.000) associated with changes in tumor suppressor genes. Intraocular manifestations have been reported as subcapsular cataract, retinal hamartomas, epiretinal membranes, keratopathy in facial palsy, and tumors of the nerves I-V are typical ocular manifestations of NF2.
PATIENTS AND MATERIALS: We prospectively examined 7 patients who met the diagnostic criteria of NF2 with regard to retinal changes using fluorescence angiography and red-free fundus photography.
RESULTS: In four patients, we found windo

PURPOSE: Permeability (Pdc) to sodium fluorescein (F) is a characteristic of the barrier function of the corneal epithelium. The repeatability of several in vivo fluorophotometric methods used to measure permeability in humans remains largely undocumented. This study examines the repeatability of a method based on topical instillation of a single drop of F for the quantitative assessment of Pdc.
METHODS: Nine healthy subjects with no history of ocular disease provided 1 (n = 1), 2 (n = 1), or 3 (n = 7) repeated measurements of each eye at successive visits. After making 3 baseline fluorescenc

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The laser endoscopy system has been modified to permit high resolution intraoperative fluorescein angiograms. Because the ciliary processes can be directly viewed and photocoagulated from a limbal wound in the phakic, aphakic, or pseudophakic eye in virtually any patient, the novel opportunity to angiographically study the ciliary processes before and after various forms of ablation was created.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eighty patients were divided into four groups and were studied under various conditions.
RESULTS: The ciliary processes normally fill with fluorescein

With the assistance of a computerized image analysis system, the author obtained a quantitative evaluation of the color of the optic disc (%R) and the fluorescein intensity (%F) in glaucomatous eyes. Patients in various stages of glaucoma were studied, including 23 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) (23 eyes), 22 patients with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) (22 eyes), along with 11 normal controls (11 eyes). In both the POAG and NTG groups, %R was lower in eyes with more marked visual field defects. The correlation coefficient between %R and the stage of visual field defect was 0.
