In 30 experiments we perfused the fetal side of the sheep placenta with fluids which had different solubilities for argon, N2, and O2 (dextran, blood, and fluorocarbon emulsions). In some of the experiments we partially exchange-transfused the ewe with the fluorocarbon emulsion. By these procedures we were able to change the physical solubility of argon and N2 severalfold in the fetal perfusion fluid and maternal blood. To evaluate the air pollution in operating rooms when anesthesia is carried out with an open-circuit anesthesia delivery system, two analyzers were tested both in the laboratory and in an operating room. The TIF 5500, a laptop instrument, allows the detection of gas with low ionisation potential such as chloro-fluorocarbons (lower detection threshold: 3 ppm). The Bruel & Kjaer 1302 allows the simultaneous determination of the concentrations of the different inhalation anesthetics in the room by photoacoustic spectrometry. For this type of study, the latter proved an excellent instrument.

Urine production, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and Na+ transport of the kidney were studied in rats after complete substitution of the blood with a fluorocarbon emulsion. The urine production is found to be increased, the GFR lowered. The Na+ load as a function of the GFR is reduced while the relative Na+ reabsorption with values in the range of 98-99% of the load is normal.

Interest in measurement of low concentrations of metal levels in suspended particulate matter has generated needs for high purity, low background filters. In this study, we prepared Langmuir-Blodgett films with domains ranging from 20 to 100 nm in size by using perfluorinated fatty acids. The domain size of the obtained LB films is markedly smaller than the ordinary domain size of hydrocarbons and fluorocarbons on the micrometer scale. The domains were prepared by controlling their growth through the addition of 2-propanol to the subphase of Langmuir monolayers. Different methods of the preparation of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) antigen for complement-fixation (CF) test are described. The antigens were prepared from the organs of suckling white rats inoculated with the Western type of HRFS by precipitation with polyethylene glycol, by fluorocarbon treatment and or by sucrose-acetone extraction. In 9 animals 500 ml of blood was replaced with 500 ml of Fluosol DA 20%. An average of 19.2 ml per kg body weight of emulsion, i.e. 3.883 gm per kg body weight of fluorocarbons was given. Two cases of lethal poisoning due to chlorodifluoromethane (Freon 22) inhalation are described. The fluorocarbon was determined in biological tissues by headspace gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Ions monitored were m/z 67, 86 and 51, the latter being used for quantification. Blood concentrations were 26.0 and 37.1 microliters/ml. In both cases, the drug was also identified in urine, vitreous humor and bile, but in much lower concentrations.

Freons from an aerosol spray can were detected in the blood, liver, brain, and lung of a 14-year-old girl who died after intentional inhalation.
