[Zeta-focal bone lengthening for bone defects after fracture-related infection: a two-case based research].

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the clinical experiences of using Zeta-focal bone lengthening to treat bone defects caused by fracture-related infection (FRI) in two cases, and to preliminarily explore its feasibility and efficacy. METHODS: In 2023, two male patients with bone defects caused by FRI were treated, aged 19 and 40 years, respectively. After admission, stage Ⅰ treatment consisted of thorough debridement and infection control based on bacterial culture and drug susceptibility test results. The lengths of bone defects were 6 cm and 22 cm, respectively. When the erythrocyte sedimentation rat

Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection complicated by autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA) and focal seizures in a paediatric patient.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae commonly causes atypical pneumonia with mild symptoms such as cough, fever and general malaise. However, it can be associated with more severe extrapulmonary manifestations affecting the cardiovascular, neurological and haematological systems. We report the case of a female toddler with mycoplasma pneumonia, initially presenting with typical symptoms such as cough and fever. The course of infection was later complicated by autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA) and focal seizures. The patient responded to treatment with intravenous azithromycin and ceftriaxone. This case hi

Immunoglobulin and CD8⁺ T-cell distribution in histologically distinctive tonsils of individuals with tonsillar focal infection.

CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that the common immunological mechanism, which involves aberration of immunoglobulin and T-cell distribution in histologically distinctive tonsils, may be associated with the pathogenesis of tonsillar focal infection. OBJECTIVES: Tonsillar focal infection comprises a group of relatively common diseases combined with chronic tonsillar infection, is associated with unusual immune responses in tonsils, and may cause lesions in another distant target organ. This study aimed to investigate the distribution of inflammatory T cells and T-cell regulatory elements,

Focal adhesion kinase is involved in rabies virus infection through its interaction with viral phosphoprotein P.

UNLABELLED: The rabies virus (RABV) phosphoprotein P is a multifunctional protein: it plays an essential role in viral transcription and replication, and in addition, RABV P has been identified as an interferon antagonist. Here, a yeast two-hybrid screen revealed that RABV P interacts with the focal adhesion kinase (FAK). The binding involved the 106-to-131 domain, corresponding to the dimerization domain of P and the C-terminal domain of FAK containing the proline-rich domains PRR2 and PRR3. The P-FAK interaction was confirmed in infected cells by coimmunoprecipitation and colocalization of F

Tonsil-related skin diseases and possible involvement of T cell co-stimulation in chronic focal infection.

Some inflammatory skin diseases are known to be related to tonsil focal infection at their onset. Administration of antibiotics is adequate treatment in most acute or subacute cases. However, chronic focal infections in the tonsils could cause chronic skin diseases like pustulosis palmaris et plantaris (PPP), and it is our frequent experience that tonsillectomy leads to a dramatic and persistent improvement of PPP skin lesions. The expression of inducible co-stimulator (ICOS), a co-stimulatory receptor on activated T cells, was significantly higher in tonsil tissues from PPP patients than in t

Disseminated Histoplasma capsulatum infection presenting with panniculitis and focal myositis in rheumatoid arthritis treated with etanercept.

We report the case of a patient with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) on etanercept who presented with panniculitis and focal myositis as manifestations of disseminated histoplasmosis. Systematic search of the literature showed 11 additional case reports of disseminated histoplasmosis with tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha) blockade therapy (infliximab, n = 8; etanercept, n = 3). Although disseminated histoplasmosis may manifest with classical symptoms of fever and respiratory complaints, it may also present atypically, such as with panniculitis and focal myositis. This review illustrates and em

Indium-111-labeled polyclonal human immunoglobulin: identifying focal infection in patients positive for human immunodeficiency virus.

Pooled human immunoglobulin labeled with indium-111 (111In-HIgG) was used to identify the presence and extent of infection in patients positive for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), presenting with either symptoms and/or signs of acute chest infection or with pyrexia without localizing signs or symptoms. Fifty-five studies were performed in 51 patients with suspected chest infection or pyrexia without localizing signs. Of these, 111In-HIgG identified intrapulmonary accumulation in 17 patients with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, eight with bacterial pneumonia, five with cytomegalovirus pneum

[Physical performance in patients with focal infection ergospirometric stress-testing before and after tonsillectomy (author's transl)].

The diagnosis of a focal infection in 13 patients (6 men and 7 women, aged 18 to 36) was based on the findings of chronic tonsillitis and general complaints interpreted as focal symptoms. The patients underwent symptom-limited maximal stress-testing before and after tonsillectomy to rule out any impairment of physical performance on the basis of computer-assisted processing of ergospirometric data. It can be concluded that the actual data of maximal oxygen uptake (aerobic power), the phenomenon of adaptation to increasing work loads (derived from rating of the increase in oxygen uptake during

Focal intracranial infections due to Actinomyces species in immunocompetent patients: diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.

OBJECTIVE: Actinomyces spp. are often underestimated as causes of central nervous system infection because they are not looked for routinely and are difficult to detect. We try to determine the optimal management of these problematic intracranial infectious diseases in neurosurgical practice. METHODS: Five cases of intracranial suppurations due to Actinomyces spp. treated between December 2007 and February 2009 are reported. The relevant clinicobacteriologic features and treatment outcomes are analyzed. RESULTS: There were two brain abscesses, two subdural empyemas, and one frontal sinus pyo

Focal tuberculous osteomyelitis of the calcaneus secondary to direct extension from an infected retrocalcaneal bursa.

We report a case of focal tuberculous involvement of the posterior margin of the calcaneus with preservation of the articular margin. The route of infection was direct extension through tuberculous retrocalcaneal bursitis, a rare and atypical pathogenesis. Magnetic resonance imaging was helpful in ruling out neoplasm and in limiting the diagnosis to an inflammatory infectious process.

[Efficiency of control of Ixodes ticks, vectors of natural and focal infections in the south of the Tyumen Region].

There are synchronous undulating variations in the number of ticks and in the incidence of tick-borne encephalitis and Ixodes tick-borne borreliosis in the south of the Tyumen Region. Since 1990s, there has been an increase in the incidence of tick-borne infections and in the number of ticks. The highest epidemic risk areas of 1418 have been treated with acaricides due to the additional financing made by the Tyumen Region in 2002-2004. The treatments with the agents Sipaz-super and Briz (25% c.e. cipermethrin) have ensured 98-100% freedom of the areas from ticks. In Tyumen and in the south of

[Exploration and removal in focal infections of the liver (apropos of 32 resections in a 4-year period].

The surgeon can no longer be satisfied today, with a diagnosis of focal lesion of the liver. It is also necessary to give the precise localisation of the nodular image compared with the segments and vessels of the gland. The lesional topography is usually determined by coeliac arteriography but, in certain cases, complementary cavography becomes necessary. On knowledge of this hepatic angio-cartography, depends the choice of approach and the nature of the surgical operation, for there are easy methods of approach where, for example, removal may reasonably be attempted and, other segments which

Reassessing Chronic Lyme Disease and Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome as Focal Infections.

The complete clinical spectrum of Lyme borreliosis has been recognized for nearly 50 years, yet its diagnosis remains challenging due to the heterogeneity of symptoms. While many symptoms are likely nonspecific, a recurring cluster, including severe fatigue, brain fog, cognitive decline, memory impairment, joint and muscle pain, limb numbness, headaches, and low-grade fever, is often labeled in the scientific literature as post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome (PTLDS), and in the popular media as "chronic Lyme disease." Based on clinical experience and retrospective case analysis, this study hy

Extraintestinal focal infections in adults with nontyphoid Salmonella bacteraemia: predisposing factors and clinical outcome.

BACKGROUND: Nontyphoid Salmonella (NTS) isolates lead to not only self-limited, acute gastrointestinal infections, but also bacteraemia with or without extraintestinal focal infections (EFIs). The risk factors associated with EFIs in adults with NTS bacteraemia were not clearly elucidated. METHODS: In a medical center in southern Taiwan, patients aged > or = 18 years with NTS bacteraemia between January 1999 and June 2005 were included for analysis. RESULTS: Of 129 patients, 51 (39.5%) were complicated with EFIs. The most common EFI was mycotic aneurysm, followed by pleuropulmonary infection

[On the epidemiological situation in quarantine, natural focal and other infections on the territory of the Southern Federal District].

The data on the sanitary and epidemiological situation in the Southern Federal District are presented. The analysis of morbidity in tuberculosis, measles, HIV infection, viral hepatitis A, typhoid fever, cholera and quarantine infections, Crimean hemorrhagic fever, West Nile fever, rabies, malaria has been carried out. Special attention has been given to "new and newly returning infections", and among them to the spread of SARS ("atypical pneumonia"). The role of regional epidemiological safety programs, in particular such program as "The prophylaxis of quarantine and natural focal infections

Scedosporium apiospermum infection presenting as a mural urinary bladder mass and focal peritonitis in a Border Collie.

Scedosporium apiospermum is an opportunistic mold that is an emerging disease in humans and animals. This report describes a case of S. apiospermum infection inciting a mural urinary bladder mass and focal peritonitis in a dog that had a history of multiple traumatic events several years prior. For diagnosis, culture followed by MALDI-ToF, PCR, and sequencing was performed to accurately identify the species. Susceptibility testing was also performed due to the inherent resistance of S. apiospermum to numerous antifungal agents.

Focal Philophthalmus gralli infection possibly persists in Melanoides tuberculata over two years following the definitive hosts' removal.

Philophthalmosis is a zoonotic disease associated largely with the spread of the invasive freshwater snail Melanoides tuberculata, serving as an intermediate host. Here we examined Philophthalmus gralli focal fenced infection site reported recently as being associated with Tinamus major and M. tuberculata in Alajuela, Costa Rica. Removal of the definitive hosts allowed us to address also the long-term survival strategy of the parasite. Initially, the snail intermediate hosts displayed high prevalence of P. gralli infection across all its age cohorts. Two years following the removal of definiti
