[Smallpox epidemics and folk's responses in the late Chosŏn period].

Smallpox was one of the most dreadful epidemic diseases in Korea until the early twentieth century. In the Chosŏn period, smallpox came to prevail more frequently and vigorously, and many people died of the disease. To cope with smallpox, the society of Chosŏn had various modes of measures, though they were not always effective, which included the government's rituals, medical men's prescriptions, and folk's recipes. Among various responses to smallpox, the recipes of folklore seem to be very interesting. While attitude toward other contagious diseases (e.g., typhoid fever, or malaria) mainly

[Folk medicine, experience therapy, a component of modern therapeutics?].

Empirical medicine has three main supporting pillars: physical treatment, dietetics and phytotherapy. In this area of medicine, a number of therapeutical methods have been evolved which stand up to investigations employing scientific criteria, and which, in consequence, have become officially recognized by medical science. Examples are: diet rich in bulkage, digitalis, products of Papaver somniferum (Poppy) and salicylates. The acceptance of phytotherapeutic agents into the drug armamentarium of scientific medicine presupposes the availability of test methods suitable to demonstrate their effe

Antimalarial Efficacy of Hydromethanolic Root Extract and Solvent Fractions of Urtica simensis Hochst. ex. A. Rich. (Urticaceae): An Experimental Study on Plasmodium berghei-Infected Mice.

BACKGROUND: Despite modern therapeutic armamentariums, malaria remains a 21st century public health menace. The issue of combating malaria is the ever-growing resistance to high-tech medications in which novel phytomedicines are highly demanding, a rapidly expanding research avenue. In Ethiopian folklore medicine, Urtica simensis has been used to treat malaria by drinking its juice after the dry roots have been mashed and combined with water. Hitherto, no in vivo study has been reported in the literature so far. To substantiate this folkloric claim, the present work herein was done. METHODS:

"In All Circumstances": Home Births and Collaborative Health Care in Ireland, 1900-1950.

This article examines the development of a collaborative model of home-based reproductive caregiving in Ireland from 1900 to 1950, focusing on the interactions of different practitioners in childbirth cases in the domestic sphere. In Ireland the move to obstetrics and trained nursing and midwifery was gradual, complicated by the needs and wants of ordinary women, who were reluctant to give up their trusted care givers and who actively sought to maintain long-standing domestic health care traditions. The result was a hybrid and collaborative model of domestic reproductive health care, requiring

Tabernaemontana divaricata leaves extract exacerbate burying behavior in mice.

OBJECTIVE: Tabernaemontana divaricata (TD) from Apocynaceae family offers the traditional folklore medicinal benefits such as an anti-epileptic, anti-mania, brain tonic, and anti-oxidant. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of ethanolic extract of TD leaves on burying behavior in mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mice were treated with oral administration (p.o.) of ethanolic extract of TD (100, 200, and 300 mg/kg). Fluoxetine (FLX, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) was used as a reference drug. Obsessive-compulsive behavior was evaluated using marble-burying apparatus.

Repressed ghosts and dissociated vampires in the enacted dimension of psychoanalytic treatment.

One of the most evocative uses of the metaphor of a ghost in psychoanalytic writing was crafted by Hans Loewald in "On the Therapeutic Action of Psycho-Analysis" (1960). In this seminal work, Loewald likened the process of psychoanalytic change to that of transforming psychic ghosts into ancestors. In the present paper, the author supplements the metaphor of ghosts that haunt with the metaphor of vampires that menace, and links these two alien experiences to two psychological processes: repression and dissociation. Descriptions of ghosts and vampires in folklore, and the ways they are experien

"Mater puerorum'. A medieval naming for an enigmatic children's disease.

The pediatric clinical entity called "Mater Puerorum' appears first in the latin translation of Rhazes' "Practica Puerorum' and in his "Continens'. His descriptions of the disease could give some likeness either to a diagnosis of night terrors, or of hyperpyretic convulsions, or of a slight form of epilepsy. Mater Puerorum is afterwards described by most pediatric authors till the Renaissance period without much originality. Rhazes being one of their main sources anyway. Mater Puerorum has been considered by Still and Radbill as a synonym for hysterical fits in children. Going back to the Arab

Antinociceptive and hypnotic effects of Premna tomentosa L. (Verbenaceae) in experimental animals.

Medicinal plants are believed to be an important source of new chemical substances with potential therapeutic effects. The research into plants with alleged folklore use as pain relievers should therefore be viewed as a fruitful and logical research strategy in the search of new analgesic drugs. In the present inquiry, antinociceptive effects of Premna tomentosa (PT) leaf extract (in methanol) were explored in experimental animals by acetic acid-induced writhing, tail flick and tail clip tests. Oral administration of PT extract at different doses (100, 200, 400 and 500 mg/kg) led to significan

Plants used as abortifacients and emmenagogues by Spanish New Mexicans.

Individuals of Spanish and Mexican descent in New Mexico have used a number of plants as emmenagogues and abortifacients. Of the plants used, cotton root bark (Gossypium sp.), inmortal ((Asclepias capricornu Woodson), poleo chino (Hedeoma oblongifolia (Gray) Heller), rue Ruta graveolens L.), wormseed (Chenopodium ambrosioides L.), and three species of Artemesia seem to be used most widely. Of these, the cotton root bark, when used as an abortifacient, seems to exhibit the lowest toxicity. Rue is notable because of its use independently within different cultures, but may exhibit toxic side effe

Cow's urine poisoning in Nigeria: cardiorespiratory effects of cow's urine in dogs.

"Cow's urine" concoction (CUPR) is a traditional remedy for convulsive seizures in Nigeria. Its administration has been associated with severe poisoning, sometimes with a fatal outcome in Nigerian children. Recently, we showed that several of the components of the concoction are toxic. We have demonstrated in the present study certain cardio-respiratory effects of cow's urine concoction in dogs. On the cardiovascular system, an initial bradycardia followed by tachycardia and a biphasic effect on blood pressue characterized by a fall followed by a rise were demonstrated. Progressive hypotension

The expression of awe: evolutionary origins and cultural elaborations of a basic emotion.

Awe is the emotion people experience when encountering stimuli that are vast and beyond their current knowledge structures. In this article, we take a basic emotion approach to the study of the expression of awe, reviewing studies of awe-related movements of facial muscles, patterns of vocalization and bodily and postural movements. We first present evidence suggesting that awe indeed is a distinct emotional state. Guided by advances in the study of multi-modal emotional expression, we then review studies of how people express awe in a pattern of mouth and gaze activity, specific vocal bursts

Pharmacotherapeutic potential of pomegranate in age-related neurological disorders.

Age-related neurological disorders [AND] include neurodegenerative diseases [NDDs] such as Alzheimer's disease [AD] and Parkinson's disease [PD], which are the most prevalent types of dementia in the elderly. It also includes other illnesses such as migraine and epilepsy. ANDs are multifactorial, but aging is their major risk factor. The most frequent and vital pathological features of AND are oxidative stress, inflammation, and accumulation of misfolded proteins. As AND brain damage is a significant public health burden and its incidence is increasing, much has been done to overcome it. Pomeg
