[Determination of dl-alpha-tocopherol acetate and dl-alpha-tocopherol in foods by HPLC using post-column photochemical reaction].

A reliable analytical method for the simultaneous determination of dl-alpha-tocopherol acetate and dl-alpha-tocopherol in foods was established by HPLC using post-column photochemical reaction with UV and fluorescence detection. For low-fat food such as fruit juice and vegetable sauce, the tocopherols were extracted with methanol containing 0.1% ascorbic acid and the extract solution was injected into the HPLC. For fatty foods such as butter and margarine, the tocopherols were extracted with a mixed solvent of acetonitrile-2-propanol (9:1) containing ascorbic acid. The extract was cleaned up u

Large Scale Food Fortification (LSFF) in East, Central, and Southern Africa: Gaps, opportunities and the way forward.

BACKGROUND: Micronutrient deficiencies affect 2 billion people globally, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, where iron, vitamin A, iodine, zinc, calcium, selenium, folate, and vitamin B12 deficiencies are common. Large Scale Food Fortification (LSFF) - addition of micronutrients to commonly consumed, industrially processed foods and condiments - can improve micronutrient intake at population level. Progress across East Central Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC) and the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) regarding fortification of wheat and maize flour, edible oils, and sugar has been u

Iron and zinc interactions in humans.

Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in the world; zinc deficiency is associated with poor growth and development and impaired immune response. Several Third World countries are taking measures to increase the dietary intake of iron and zinc with fortification of foods or dietary supplements. Several studies showed that high iron concentrations can negatively affect zinc absorption in adults when these trace minerals are given in solution. However, when iron and zinc are given in a meal, this effect is not observed. Solomons (J Nutr 1986;116:927-35) postulated that the tot

Food-based strategies to mitigate protein-energy undernutrition in later life.

Ensuring adequate food intake among older people is essential for maintaining health and preventing malnutrition. This review explores strategies to enhance dietary intake in this population group. Several key interventions are highlighted, including offering high-energy and protein-fortified meals and snacks, optimising the visual appeal and presentation of foods, enhancing flavours, and providing finger foods or modified textures to support consumption. Familiarity with fortified foods may encourage acceptance and increase intake, while improving food aesthetics and incorporating varied flav

Expanding Fortification with Folic Acid: Thinking Outside the Cereal-Grain Box.

(1) Background: Fortifying maize and wheat flours with folic acid has effectively reduced neural tube defect-affected births. However, maize and wheat flours may not be widely consumed in all countries; further reduction in neural tube defect-affected births could benefit from the identification of alternative food vehicles. We aimed to use dietary intake or apparent consumption data to determine alternative food vehicles for large-scale fortification with folic acid in low-income and lower-middle-income countries (LILMICs) and identify current research related to examining the technological f

Perception and acceptance of micronutrient-Fortified Bouillon among Non-Index Household Members: A longitudinal sub-study nested within a randomized trial in Northern Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Fortified bouillon cubes offer a scalable strategy to address micronutrient deficiencies in West Africa. However, success depends on household members' perceptions and acceptance. This study assessed changes in perception and acceptance of fortified bouillon cubes over time and explored factors influencing these outcomes among non-index household members (NIHMs) from trial households in Northern Ghana. METHODS: This longitudinal mixed-methods study was nested within a double-masked randomised controlled trial. Households received micronutrient-fortified bouillon cubes (vitamin A,

Ready-to-Use School Meals in Northern Ghana Are a Viable Alternative to Traditional School Meals.

School feeding provides nutrition, brings order to the school day, and enhances student participation. School feeding in low-income countries is often sporadic due to coordination challenges among multiple stakeholders. To assess the reliability of school feeding in Mion district, a food-insecure area in northern Ghana, Project Peanut Butter (PPB) studied ready-to-use school meals (RUSMs) and micronutrient-fortified home-grown school food (HGSF). The school meals were initially provided daily in elementary schools and then extended to junior high schools. The key elements of functional program

Salt dual-fortified with iodine and micronized ground ferric pyrophosphate affects iron status but not hemoglobin in children in Cote d'Ivoire.

Deficiencies of iron and iodine are common in West Africa, and salt is one of very few food vehicles available for fortification. Salt dual-fortified with iodine and micronized ground ferric pyrophosphate (FePP) was tested for its efficacy in rural, tropical Côte d'Ivoire. First, salt and iron intakes, and iron bioavailability were estimated using 3-d weighed food records in 24 households. Local iodized salt was then fortified with 3 mg Fe/g salt as ground FePP (mean particle size = 2.5 mum), and stability, sensory and acceptability trials were done. The dual fortified salt (DFS) was distribut

Food Fortification Ineffective in Preventing Neural Tube Defects in India due to Regulation Promoting Inadequate Levels of Folic Acid and Vitamin B12.

BACKGROUND: There is a high prevalence of neural tube defects (NTDs) and nutritional anemias that increase the risk of birth defects in India. The current staple food fortification regulations for folic acid and vitamin B12 are ineffective in the country. We provide an evidence-based viewpoint urging for WHO-recommended levels of fortificants (i.e., 1300 mcg of folic acid and 10 mcg of vitamin B12 per kilogram of wheat flour or rice) to be included in the regulation. METHODS: Micronutrient fortified foods are being distributed through various governmental safety-net programs under the Nationa

Nutritional anemias.

Prevention of nutritional deficiencies should be attained by the consumption of a good diet. Unfortunately, in the case of iron, this is not always possible, and it is advantageous to fortify food with iron. Milk-based formulas and cereals are the most commonly used iron-fortified products in infancy and early childhood. Bioavailability of iron from cereals is low and more clinical studies on the field are necessary to demonstrate the effectiveness of iron-fortified cereals in infants and children of developing countries. Infections and excessive blood loss in infancy related to the use of fre

Comparison of Oxidative Status of Human Milk, Human Milk Fortifiers and Preterm Infant Formulas.

Preterm and low birth weight infants require specific nutrition to overcome the accumulated growth deficit, and to prevent morbidities related to postnatal growth failure. In order to guarantee an adequate nutrient-intake, mother's own milk, when available, or donor human milk, are usually fortified with additional nutrients, in particular proteins. Fortification with processed ingredients may result in additional intake in oxidative compounds, deriving from extensive heat treatments, that are applied during processing. The aim of the present work was to compare the in vitro antioxidant activi

Sensory evaluations of a novel iron and zinc-enriched powder for the potential treatment and prevention of iron deficiency in women of reproductive age.

Iron deficiency (ID) and ID with anaemia (IDA) are serious global health problems that disproportionately affect women aged 15-49 years. Although food fortification is one of the most effective and sustainable ways to combat nutritional deficiencies, iron remains one of the most difficult micronutrients to fortify, given its tendency to react strongly with food constituents. Therefore, it is important to assess the sensory properties of foods fortified with iron to determine the acceptability and palatability in target populations. We aimed to determine the palatability and acceptability of a
