Addiction is a chronic relapsing brain disease characterized by compulsive reward-seeking despite harmful consequences. The mechanisms underlying addiction are orchestrated by transcriptional reprogramming in the reward system of vulnerable subjects. This study aims at revealing gene expression alterations across different types of addiction. We analyzed publicly available transcriptome datasets of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) from a palatable food and a cocaine addiction study. We found 56 common genes upregulated in the PFC of addicted mice in these two studies, whereas most of the differenti

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Recent studies reported that when given a mutually exclusive choice between cocaine and palatable food, most rats prefer the non-drug reward over cocaine. However, these studies used rat strains with limited genetic and behavioral diversity. Here, we used a unique outbred strain of rats (Heterogeneous Stock, HS) that mimic the genetic variability of humans.
METHODS: We first identified individual differences in addiction-like behaviors (low and high). Next, we tested choice between cocaine and palatable food using a discrete choice procedure. We characterized the ind

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are known risk factors for obesity and poor outcomes following weight loss interventions. ACEs are also associated with addictive behaviors and, potentially, food addiction (FA). This study examined the relationship between ACEs and FA, and their association to undergoing bariatric surgery and post-surgical weight loss outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between June 2013 and January 2016, 1586 bariatric-surgery-seeking patients completed a psychological evaluation. During their evaluation, the patients were administered measures includi

University students are a vulnerable population to the development of disordered eating, such as food addiction (FA) and grazing. FA is an emerging concept characterized by an intense desire to eat hyper-palatable foods. Grazing is characterized by the repetitive and unplanned ingestion of food throughout a period of time. Both FA and grazing have been associated with increased scores of negative urgency (NU) and difficulties in emotion regulation (ER). This study aims to evaluate the frequency of FA and grazing in a university population and to test the direct, total, and indirect effects-via

PURPOSE: A higher risk of food addiction (FA) in individuals reporting childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has been well demonstrated with community samples, but studies including clinical samples failed to replicate this relation. This study examined, among individuals presenting eating and weight disorders, the risk of FA for those reporting CSA while considering the severity of CSA and other types of traumas.
METHODS: Participants (N = 187) completed a DSM-5 diagnosis assessment and questionnaires on LimeSurvey evaluating FA, interpersonal traumas, depressive level, body esteem, dieting/weight pr

Explanatory models for eating disorders have changed over time to account for changing clinical presentations. The transdiagnostic model evolved from the maintenance model, which provided the framework for cognitive behavioural therapy for bulimia nervosa. However, for many individuals (especially those at the extreme ends of the weight spectrum), this account does not fully fit. New evidence generated from research framed within the food addiction hypothesis is synthesized here into a model that can explain recurrent binge eating behaviour. New interventions that target core maintenance eleme

UNLABELLED: Food addiction (FA) has been examined in different populations. Although high FA levels are associated with greater eating disorder severity, few studies have addressed how FA relates to treatment outcome.
GOALS: The study aims (1) to determine whether a brief intervention for bulimia nervosa (BN) reduces FA diagnosis or severity compared with baseline and (2) to determine if FA is predictive of treatment outcome.
METHOD: Sixty-six female BN patients participated in the study. The Yale Food Addiction Scale was administered at two time points: prior to and following a 6-week inter

INTRODUCTION: Professional bus drivers work in a safety-critical, high-demand context that may increase vulnerability to non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and addictive behaviors. However, the symptom-level mechanisms underlying this risk remain poorly understood, limiting the development of targeted, occupation-sensitive prevention and intervention strategies.
METHODS: Using cluster sampling, 1250 bus drivers were screened in southern Anhui (June 1-July 1, 2023). Participants completed standardized assessments, including a questionnaire based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental

BACKGROUND: The construct of Food Addiction (FA) has generated growing interest in the context of Anorexia Nervosa (AN), especially for its potential clinical implications. While AN is traditionally associated with restrictive eating patterns, recent findings suggest that FA symptoms may also be present in this population, complicating the clinical picture. This study aimed to explore FA symptomatology in individuals with AN using a person-centered approach and to identify psychological variables associated with different FA profiles.
METHODS: A sample of 202 individuals with a diagnosis of A

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders (SUDs) are a leading public health concern in the United States. Food addiction (FA), as a common comorbidity or substitute addiction of SUDs, is not currently a fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) diagnosis, with overlaps with SUDs and eating disorders (EDs). How FA is addressed in SUD treatment is understudied.
METHODS: Cross-sectional survey interviews with service providers (N = 85) from 68 SUD treatment facilities across 20 U.S. states asked an open-ended question on how FA was addressed. Descriptive stati

BACKGROUND: The pursuit of highly palatable foods as a reward can lead to dysfunctional eating behaviors. In bariatric surgery candidates, symptoms of food addiction may impact postoperative weight loss, increase the risk of developing psychological and behavioral disorders, and influence body image perception. The objective was to determine the association between food addiction and body image dissatisfaction in bariatric surgery candidates.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Multidisciplinary Outpatient Clinic for Surgical Obesity at Hospital de Clínicas of the Federal

Obesity and food addiction are associated with distinct brain signatures related to reward processing, and early life adversity (ELA) also increases alterations in these same reward regions. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the effect of early life adversity on food addiction are unknown. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the interactions between ELA, food addiction, and brain morphometry in individuals with obesity. 114 participants with high body mass index (BMI) underwent structural MRIs, and completed several questionnaires (e.g., Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS), Br

Prader-Willi syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental genetic disorder characterized by various endocrine, cognitive and behavioural problems. The symptoms include an obsession for food and reduced satiety, which leads to hyperphagia and morbid obesity. Neuropsychological studies have reported that Prader-Willi patients display altered social interactions with a specific weakness in interpreting social information and responding to them, a symptom close to that observed in autism spectrum disorders. In the present case-control study, we hypothesized that brain regions associated with compulsive e

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Patients with obesity frequently report impulsivity or loss control of food intake, reflecting the dysfunction of brain regions involved in reward and cognitive control processing related to food addiction (FA). Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) may help to identify the cognitive processes underlying FA. In patients with obesity, we aimed at identifying (i) fMRI specific responses in brain regions involved in hedonic and motivational processes (striatum), and cognitive control (e.g. prefrontal cortex) according to FA severity; (ii) whether FA severity is related t

PURPOSE: Behavioral and neurobiological abnormalities in addiction and obesity have led to the theory of food addiction in obesity (FAOB) and brain-behavior association studies. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies and treats various brain disorders. Cortico-cortical paired associative stimulation TMS protocol, in which left lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC) stimulation follows right LPFC stimulation, can reduce emotional reactivity to visual triggers and modulate prefrontal asymmetry in healthy adults. Accordingly, we examined the effects of acute ccPAS on food cravings and brain re

Food addiction (FA) has been proposed as a behavioral factor contributing to obesity in adolescents, particularly among those experiencing psychological difficulties. Mindful eating may represent a protective characteristic, but its statistical relationship with psychological difficulties and FA in adolescents with obesity remains unclear. Forty-eight adolescents with obesity (ages 11–18; 54.2% female) were recruited from a pediatric outpatient clinic in Türkiye. FA symptoms were assessed using the Yale Food Addiction Scale for Children (YFAS-C), mindful eating with the Mindful Eating Question

OBJECTIVE: Food addiction (FA) is implicated in obesity, yet the potential moderating role of mindful eating and the underlying neural mechanisms in youth remain unclear.
METHODS: This study integrated a multicenter cross-sectional survey, a longitudinal study with 6- and 12-month follow-ups, and an independent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sample. FA, eating motives, mindful eating, BMI z-score, fat content, and visceral fat level were assessed. Analyses utilized structural equation modeling, latent growth modeling, and voxel-based morphometry.
RESULTS: Among 2071 screened, 1601 youth (5

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Food addiction has been linked to psychopathology and reduced psychological well-being. Here, we investigated whether these associations are mainly driven by food addiction itself or mediated via an increase in BMI.
METHODS: Data stem from a nationwide survey from Denmark (n = 1474 participants). The survey questionnaire included the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 (YFAS 2.0) measuring food addiction, questions on height and weight (to compute BMI), and a range of self-reported measures of psychopathology and psychological well-being. The association between food addiction
