Vitamin C Deficiency Related Cytopenias in Hematology Practice: Revisiting Risk Factors of Access and Income.

Vitamin C (l-ascorbic acid) is an essential dietary micronutrient needed for iron absorption, collagen synthesis, antioxidant activity, and immune regulation. This retrospective analysis examines 23 patients seen in a classical hematology clinic in Appalachia between 2020 and 2025 who had severe vitamin C deficiency (< 0.1 mg/dL). Most patients presented with anemia, fatigue, or other dermatologic findings, and over half lived in food-desert regions. Micronutrient testing often revealed overlapping deficiencies, and 17% of patients experienced a bone marrow biopsy. Principal component analysis

Considerations for the development of a dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius) semen collection centre.

The dromedary camel (DC) is a strategic animal for the exploitation of the desert and unhospitable lands (arid and semiarid areas). These animals are a genetic resource, locally adapted and more resilient to these environs, that may significantly contribute to food security and sustainable development of marginal land areas. Artificial insemination is the least invasive, least expensive technique for improving genetic selection and minimising transmission of venereal disease among animals and herds. Besides semen preservation protocols, specific approaches for the development of DC semen colle

A plague epidemic in voluntary quarantine.

In September 1665, an outbreak of plague occurred in Eyam, a small village 10 miles west of Sheffield, in an isolated valley of Derbyshire. Eighty per cent of the population died during the 14 months of the epidemic, a greater proportion than any other community in England. When plague threatened to cause panic and desertion of the village, the vicar of Eyam persuaded the villagers to stay, and to impose a voluntary quarantine on their village, in order to avoid spreading the plague to the surrounding villages. Quarantine was strictly observed for the last five months of the epidemic, when it

The effect of Indian or Anglo dietary preference on the incidence of diabetes in Pima Indians.

OBJECTIVE: In short-term studies, adoption of a traditional diet is associated with reduction in metabolic abnormalities often found in populations experiencing rapid lifestyle changes. We examined the long-term effects of a self-assessed traditional or nontraditional dietary pattern on the development of type 2 diabetes in 165 nondiabetic Pima Indians. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Dietary intake was assessed in 1988 by a quantitative food frequency method, and subjects were asked to classify their diet as "Indian," "Anglo," or "mixed." The Indian diet reflects a preference for Sonoran-style

Controlled hypobaric hypoxia increases immunological tolerance by modifying HLA-G expression, a potential therapy to inflammatory diseases.

One of the most striking characteristics of human beings is the incredible capacity to adapt to different environments. This capacity allowed humans to spread all over our planet, occupying habitats as diverse as deserts, tropical forests or tundra regions. Interactions with the environment, climate, food and water availability shaped our evolution and define our survival. Essential to human life, oxygen availability also controls human dispersion and adaptation. For example, low oxygen availability can lead to physiological adaptations in populations living in highlands. Moreover, the consequ

Seasonal Metabolic Acclimatization Varies in Direction and Magnitude among Years in Two Arid-Zone Passerines.

Adaptive plasticity in avian thermal physiology is increasingly apparent, with a well-studied example being metabolic upregulation during cold winters in small birds inhabiting temperate and boreal latitudes. Recent studies have revealed greater variation in the direction and magnitude of seasonal metabolic adjustments among subtropical/tropical birds experiencing milder winters compared with higher-latitude counterparts, suggesting that patterns could vary among years within populations. We quantified seasonal metabolic variation (summer vs. winter) in Kalahari Desert populations of two Afrot

Ambient temperature and toxic diets constrain snake venom resistance in a desert rodent.

Variation in ambient temperature and food availability is commonplace in nature and likely exerts several types of eco-evolutionary pressures that mediate species' interactions. In predator-prey interactions between snakes and rodents, the molecular interface is formed by snake venom and mammalian venom resistance proteins. However, the abiotic factors modulating resistance are poorly understood. Here, we measured serum-based venom resistance of desert woodrats (Neotoma lepida) maintained at either cool or warm ambient temperatures and fed creosote bush resin (native diet) or a control diet. A review of historical and recent locust outbreaks: Links to global warming, food security and mitigation strategies.

Locusts differ from ordinary grasshoppers in their ability to swarm over long distances and are among the oldest migratory pests. The ecology and biology of locusts make them among the most devastating pests worldwide and hence the calls for actions to prevent the next outbreaks. The most destructive of all locust species is the desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria). Here, we review the current locust epidemic 2020 outbreak and its causes and prevention including the green technologies that may provide a reference for future directions of locust control and food security. Massive locust outbre

Chaparral-associated hepatotoxicity.

BACKGROUND: Personal health care practices that may include the use of dietary supplements are common in the United States. Products marketed as dietary supplements are diverse and may include botanicals, vitamins, and/or minerals. Chaparral (Larrea tridentata) is a botanical dietary supplement made from a desert shrub and used for its antioxidant properties. Several reports of chaparral-associated hepatitis have been published since 1990, but a complete picture of the clinical presentation is still unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the 18 case reports of adverse events associated w

Derived muscle arrangements and their shared innervation patterns of external and internal cheek pouches in rodents.

Cheek pouches have evolved from the oral cavity in rodents and act as temporary food storage repositories. There are two types of opening, internal and external. Details about the complex cutaneous muscles controlling the pouches have still not been fully elucidated. To understand the shared and derived traits of the muscles surrounding the cheek pouch and their innervation, we carried out an evolutionary morphological study using two desert kangaroo rats (Dipodomys deserti) and three plains pocket gophers (Geomys bursarius) from each of the two families equipped with external cheek pouches, a

Analysis of inorganic chemical constituents in the secretions of Populus euphratica.

Populus euphratica (P. euphratica) is a key desert riparian plant species in central Asia. This species has adapted to harsh habitat conditions by excreting salts in the form of P. euphratica secretion (PES). PES is known to have therapeutic benefits for ailments such as sore throats, gastrointestinal disorders, and neurasthenia. Meanwhile, local inhabitants harvest PES for the preparation of an alkaline paste, a digestive beverage for their diet and flour leavening agent. Despite its various uses, the chemical composition of PES remains to be elucidated. In this study, the elemental and ionic

Camel Milk Resistome in Kuwait: Genotypic and Phenotypic Characterization.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the major global health and economic threats. There is growing concern about the emergence of AMR in food and the possibility of transmission of microorganisms possessing antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) to the human gut microbiome. Shotgun sequencing and in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing were used in this study to provide a detailed characterization of the antibiotic resistance profile of bacteria and their ARGs in dromedary camel milk. Eight pooled camel milk samples, representative of multiple camels distributed in the Kuwait desert, we

The assessment of cadmium, chromium, copper, and nickel tolerance and bioaccumulation by shrub plant Tetraena qataranse.

Heavy metals constitute some of the most significant environmental contaminants today. The abundance of naturally growing Tetraena qataranse around Ras Laffan oil and gas facilities in the state of Qatar reflects its toxitolerant character. This study examined the desert plant's tolerance to Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb relative to soil concentration. Analysis by inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) showed that the plant biomass accumulates higher Cd, Cr, Cu and Ni concentration than the soil, particularly in the root. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) of all metal

Female mating strategy and male brood cannibalism in a sand-dwelling cardinalfish.

I investigated male and female sexual strategies of a cardinalfish, Apogon niger, which breeds in sandy areas at sporadic coral colonies. Males mouthbrood an egg mass received from one female at a time. Because of the lengthy mouthbrooding period, the interspawning interval was shorter for females than for males. Females moved between coral colonies to find mates more extensively than did males, and more frequently deserted mates after spawning. The females shortened their interspawning intervals by changing mates, especially in the late breeding season, when their mobility was highest. Their

Understanding type 2 diabetes self-management in the Marshall Islands: A mixed-methods exploration of sociocultural and structural barriers.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) poses a critical public health challenge in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, where prevalence rates are among the highest globally. Despite the central role of self-management in diabetes care, adherence and utilization of health services remain inadequate and are major contributors to diabetes-related morbidity and mortality. We aimed to identify factors influencing self-management and to explore the sociocultural context shaping these behaviors using an explanatory sequential mixed methods approach. From March to May 2023, we surveyed 123 randomly selecte

Purification and characterization of indochrome type blue pigment produced by Pseudarthrobacter sp. 34LCH1 isolated from Atacama desert.

The interest in and demand for natural dyes has increased significantly in recent years; however, very few natural blue dyes are commercially available, because blue colored compounds in nature are relatively rare. In this study, a blue pigment-producing bacteria from Lake Chungará (Atacama Desert, Chile) was isolated, and its blue pigment was purified and chemically characterized. The pigment-producing strain was identified as Pseudarthrobacter sp. by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The pigment was separated from the filtered culture medium by column chromatography/solid-phase extraction using diff
