BACKGROUND: Food additives are intentionally-added ingredients in order to modify physical, chemical, biological, or sensory characteristics of foods. Allergic reactions caused by additives are uncommon in children, and their prevalence is not known; however, they can be severe.
CASE REPORT: An 8-year-old male presented with anaphylaxis and recurrent anaphylactic shocks due to multiple triggering factors such as food additives and medications. Point-of-care skin tests were performed with several additives, with positive results. Personalized emergency treatment was indicated in view of the po

Adverse reactions to foods are frequent in everyday life. They are divided into toxic and immunologic food reactions. The awareness of toxic food reactions among adverse reactions to food is essential for correct diagnosis. Enzymatic food intolerance, adverse reactions to food or food additives, pharmacologic food intolerance, psychosomatic factors, food allergy with classic symptoms (anaphylaxis, urticaria-angioedema), atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis (protein), upper and lower respiratory symptoms like rhinitis or asthma, and gastrointestinal disorders (oral allergy syndrome, colic, nau

The prevalence of food allergy has increased in some regions of the world, and with it the incidence, according to geographical variability, in the phenotype and clinical manifestations. Food allergy arises from the specific immune response induced by exposure to the proteins of a certain food. Food intolerance refers to non-immune reactions, caused by unique physiological characteristics of the individual, including metabolic, toxic, pharmacological and undefined mechanisms. Adverse reactions to foods are classified as: IgE-mediated: Type I Hypersensitivity, non-IgE-mediated: Type IV Hypersen

Food allergy is defined as an adverse immune response towards food proteins or as a form of a food intolerance associated with a hypersensitive immune response. It should also be reproducible by a double-blind placebo-controlled food challenge. Many reported that food reactions are not allergic but are intolerances. Food allergy often presents to clinicians as a symptom complex. This review focuses on the clinical spectrum and manifestations of various forms of food allergies. According to clinical presentations and allergy testing, there are three types of food allergy: IgE mediated, mixed (I

Hens' eggs are a common food in the American diet. They are consumed as a primary food source and added as an ingredient to other foods. In individuals who are hypersensitive to eggs, egg-containing foods can cause mild to severe allergic reactions if ingested. These individuals may also have adverse reactions to vaccines produced on egg media. Vaccines that are created on egg media include those for measles, mumps, and rubella; rabies; yellow fever; and influenza. The authors discuss recent developments in the use of egg-containing vaccines in hypersensitive patients.

The interpretation of epidemiological data on food hypersensitivities should clearly separate two issues: the disposition to respond symptomatically to certain foods and the actual reactions occurring, which can be observed only when there is sufficient consumption or targeted exposure/provocation.The exact specification of the case definition is essential for reporting and interpreting food hypersensitivity frequencies. In Europe, prevalence estimates of self-reported reactions are reported from 5.7 to 61.6 %, and physician-diagnosed hypersensitivities from 0.2 to 4.2 %. Consideration of only

Adverse food reactions, an adverse health effect arising from an immune or nonimmune response that occurs reproducibly on the exposure to a given food, can be divided into toxic and hypersensitivity reactions. When an immunologic mechanism has been shown, hypersensitivity food reactions should be referred to as food allergy that may be IgE- or non-IgE-mediated. Food allergy diagnosis is mainly guided by a correct and accurate history and physical examination, thus leading to prick test and elimination diets. The treatment gold standard is still represented by an elimination diet together with

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Food allergy is defined as an adverse health effect arising from a specific immune response that occurs reproducibly on exposure to a given food. Food intolerance, certain gastrointestinal or systemic diseases are often confused with or mislabeled as food allergy because of symptomatic similarity and general improvement from food avoidance. The differences between these diseases are crucial.
RECENT FINDINGS: Compared with many food-related diseases that are isolated to gastrointestinal organs, food allergy can affect not only local but the whole immune system and may lead t

Despite the increasing amount of data that has accumulated on sulfites as the intensity of medical interest has expanded in recent years, there are lingering, difficult, and, in most cases, as yet unresolved questions about sulfite sensitivity. These include questions about mechanism of action, prevalence, the most effective methods for protecting sulfite-sensitive patients from exposure to sulfites, and other issues. Perhaps the most important question, however, is whether sulfite sensitivity represents but one example of reactions that have occurred, are occurring, or will occur from exposur

The spectrum of occupational diseases most commonly seen in the food industry includes occupational asthma, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, dermatitis, and hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Occupational asthma represents between 3% and 20% of all asthma cases and is the most common form of occupational lung disease. Occupational skin diseases may represent between 10% and 15% of all occupational diseases, and they have significant economic impact. Hypersensitivity pneumonitis affects the food industry, with farmer's lung representing a common form of the disease. Each of these diseases may have serious

Within the last ten years, the IgE mediated type of allergy to natural rubber latex has become an increasing and clinically important problem. Health professionals, rubber industry workers and individuals with spina bifida have been found to be at special risk of latex allergy. Clinical symptoms manifest as contact urticaria, rhinoconjunctivitis, asthma or even as intraoperative anaphylactic shock. An association between allergies to latex proteins and to various food-"Latex fruit syndrome "has been reported. Strict avoidance of the use of latex products is the primary preventive measure. In t

Food allergy and food-related worsening of dermatitis can occur in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD). We reviewed the relationship of AD with food allergen hypersensitivity and the risks and benefits of food allergen testing and avoidance in patients with AD. Skin prick testing and specific immunoglobulin E to aeroallergens may identify patients with immediate hypersensitivity. Atopy patch tests may detect non-immunoglobulin E-mediated reactions but are not standardized or routinely used. Younger children with more severe AD in whom the optimal management failed may have food-triggered AD.

Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are often attributed to adverse reactions to foods (ARF), but it is not always clear whether such reactions are caused by food allergy. A reaction to food proteins that is mediated by immunologic events is referred to as food allergy or food hypersensitivity. One of the most common types of food allergy is the IgE-mediated immediate hypersensitivity reaction to foods, which can give rise to dermatologic and respiratory tract symptoms in addition to GI complaints. Other GI forms of food allergy include food protein-induced enterocolitis or gastroenteropathy, celia

There is some evidence in the literature that adverse reactions to foods can contribute to behavioral dysfunction. In view of what is known about food and behavior, this suggestion is entirely plausible. However, clear demonstrations of adverse behavioral reactions to foods have not been reported. The major methodologic problems are those of defining suitable baseline conditions and dealing with large ranges in dose, time course, and severity of reactions among putatively food-sensitive individuals. These problems, although large, are surmountable. Another problem for studies in this area is n

Peanut is the major allergen in the United States. It is increasing in importance in Europe and has become the principal food allergen affecting children over the age of three years, once hypersensitivity to eggs has resolved. We report 132 pediatric cases of peanut hypersensitivity, confirmed by food challenge. The study group included 86 boys and 46 girls aged between 6 months and 15 years. More than half the children with peanut hypersensitivity were diagnosed before the age of three. The most common symptom was atopic dermatitis (43.1% of cases). The other symptoms observed were hoarseness

The syndrome of immediate type I food hypersensitivity, mediated by tissue-bound IgE antibody and mast cell histamine release, is well recorded in the medical literature. This case study represents a previously undescribed late food hypersensitivity, induced only by strenuous exercise. Identification of this new syndrome illustrates classical epidemiologic analysis, improves medical advice for the allergic and athletically inclined, and raises new questions in the areas of allergy and immunology.

Food challenges play an important role in the diagnosis and management of food hypersensitivity. Although the gold-standard is the double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge, an open challenge, where the challenge food is known to both the patient and the allergy team, is a practical and effective tool for use in daily clinical practice. A food challenge can help determine the presence or absence of a food allergy if the history and allergy tests are discordant, or if resolution of the allergy is expected. The outcome of a food challenge can result in either confident introduction or re-i

There is ample evidence that food additives of several sorts may precipitate adverse reactions. Some of these have catastrophic potential such as sulfite sensitivity in asthmatic patients. Fortunately, asthmatic responses to a variety of additives are certainly not as prevalent as once feared, and are probably unusual. Restricted diets are of no general benefit in asthmatic patients. In contrast to asthma, urticarial or other cutaneous reactions to food additives are more common. A restricted diet for a few months' duration may be beneficial, although the mechanism through which this is achiev

Food allergy (hypersensitivity) is a form of adverse food reaction caused by an immunological response to a particular food. IgE-mediated food allergy is responsible for most immediate-type food-induced hypersensitivity reactions. The prevalence of food allergy in the general population, not including oral allergy syndrome, is about 1-2%. While adults might tend to be allergic to fish, crustaceans, peanuts, and tree nuts, children, on the other hand, tend to be allergic to cow's milk, egg white, wheat, and soy. Food is the most common eliciting factor of anaphylaxis (45%), followed by drugs (2
