No preclinical experimental approach enables the study of voluntary oral consumption of high-concentration Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and its intoxicating effects, mainly owing to the aversive response of rodents to THC that limits intake. Here, we developed a palatable THC formulation and an optimized access paradigm in mice to drive voluntary consumption. THC was formulated in chocolate gelatin (THC-E-gel). Adult male and female mice were allowed ad libitum access for 1 and 2 hr. Cannabimimetic responses (hypolocomotion, analgesia, and hypothermia) were measured following access. Levels o

OBJECTIVE: Food insecurity is a risk factor for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease in the general population. However, little is known about the impact of food insecurity on hepatic steatosis among women with HIV (WWH) and women without HIV (WWOH).
DESIGN: We assessed hepatic steatosis by controlled attenuated parameter (CAP) in decibels/meter (dB/m) and food security status using the U.S. Household Food Security Survey in women without viral hepatitis. Women were categorized as being food secure vs. food insecure.
METHODS: We performed multivariable linear regression a

BACKGROUND: In 2020, the United States had approximately 85,000 new diagnoses of Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Food insecurity is both a direct and indirect detriment to health outcomes. The rate and risk factors for food insecurity among lymphoma patients are unknown, as the unemployment rate soars far above pre-COVID19 pandemic levels further heightening the economic stresses of a lymphoma diagnosis.
METHODS: Data regarding the food security status were obtained from the cross-sectional National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

RATIONALE: Food insecurity is a persistent social problem affecting one out of eight households in the United States. While evidence shows that public assistance programs (formal assistance) are effective in reducing food insecurity, there is more limited evidence documenting how informal support, through social capital, affects food insecurity.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the role of informal support (through instrumental social support, social cohesion, social control, and social participation) on food insecurity transitions using longitudinal data of a sample of disadvantaged urban mothers from

UNLABELLED: Food insecurity is a commonly underrecognized social determinant of health and is a risk factor for severe, though uncommon, nutritional deficiencies. This report describes a 60-year-old male with a history of asthma and housing instability who presented to the emergency department (ED) for shortness of breath and was found to have classic findings of vitamin C deficiency, colloquially known as scurvy. Examination revealed diffuse wheezing, poor dentition with palatal ecchymosis, and a perifollicular rash with scattered bruising on his bilateral lower extremities. Due to financial

Climate change (CC) poses a major global threat to the health of current and future generations, disproportionately affecting pediatric populations. Investigating the links between CC and pediatric diseases is crucial to inform research and prevention strategies aimed at breaking the transgenerational cycle of social inequalities. This narrative review explores the complex interactions between early-life exposures to CC, food insecurity, and malnutrition, and their impact on infectious and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in pediatric populations. Data reveal a concerning global scenario: half

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Food insecurity (FI) is a risk factor for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and advanced fibrosis in the general population, but its impact on liver disease in people with HIV (PWH) is unknown.
METHODS: We examined the association of FI with prevalence of NAFLD and fibrosis in a diverse cohort of PWH. PWH aged ≥ 18 years on antiretroviral therapy, HIV RNA <200 copies/mL, and without other known liver diseases were screened for NAFLD (controlled attenuated parameter ≥263 decibels/meter) and advanced fibrosis (liver stiffness measurement ≥11 kilopascals) by vibration c

Food insecurity is a major threat to global public health and sustainable development. As of 2022, 2.4 billion people worldwide experienced moderate to severe food insecurity. The occurrence and severity of food insecurity can depend greatly on power and social hierarchies, with women and girls often being less food secure than men and boys even within the same household. Moreover, social roles, such as the socialization of a mother to feed her children, impact food insecurity and its consequences. This study aims to uncover the relationships between food insecurity and mental health for women

Objective: Our aim was to evaluate relationships between swallowing difficulty (dysphagia) and social determinants of health (SDOH) in older adults ≥65 years. Method: Cross-sectional analyses were performed in community-dwelling Medicare beneficiaries from the National Health & Aging Trends Study (NHATS). The primary exposure was self-reported difficulty chewing/swallowing in the prior month. Dependent measures included a variety of SDOH outcomes (e.g., food insecurity [FI]). Weighted logistic regression models were estimated to determine associations between dysphagia and SDOH outcomes. Resul

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the state of the science of food and nutrition security among justice-impacted populations, identify who might be most at-risk and health consequences, and to highlight areas for continued research and policy implications.
RECENT FINDINGS: This population is at-risk for experiencing food and nutrition insecurity due to high rates of unemployment, parental history of incarceration, housing instability, depressive symptoms, and social isolation, which result from involvement with the corrections system. Health consequence

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether food insecurity is associated with past-year DSM-IV mental disorders after controlling for standard indicators of family socioeconomic status (SES) in a U.S. national sample of adolescents.
METHOD: Data were drawn from 6,483 adolescent-parent pairs who participated in the National Comorbidity Survey Replication Adolescent Supplement, a national survey of adolescents 13 to 17 years old. Frequency and severity of food insecurity were assessed with questions based on the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Security Scale (standardized to a mean of 0, variance of 1

Food and nutrition insecurity, which affects an estimated 815 million households (the majority in developing countries), is in large part due to micronutrient deficiencies. The magnitude of the problem, causes, consequences and cost-effective solutions elucidated by scientists over the last few decades changed perceptions and drew political commitments in the 1990s to alleviate micronutrient deficiencies. Prevalence was reduced for iodine and vitamin A deficiency disorders largely through mandated universal fortification of salt with iodine and wide distribution of vitamin A supplements associ

OBJECTIVES: We explored differences in adolescents' eating habits, perceptions, and dietary intakes by food security status.
METHODS: As part of Project EAT (Eating Among Teens), we surveyed 4746 multiethnic middle and high school students in 31 primarily urban schools in the Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, area during the 1998-1999 academic year. Participants completed in-class surveys. We used multiple regression analysis to characterize associations between behaviors, perceptions, nutritional intake, and food security status.
RESULTS: Compared with food-secure youths, food-insecure youth

Although food insecurity configures a public health issue in developing countries going through nutrition transition, there is still lack of evidence on how it is affected by social determinants and its relationship with ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption. Using qualitative methods, we investigated the experience of food (in)security among mothers living in the Brazilian Amazon area, identifying aspects of food insecurity promoting UPF consumption. In-depth interviews were performed with 40 women and inductive content analysis was used. Signs of food insecurity included difficulties in foo

BACKGROUND: Food clubs are a higher-agency food aid intervention that charge a small fee for a set number of items. Some incorporate longer-term solutions such as budgeting support and cooking skills. These are in place in England to help address inadequate reliable access to affordable, nutritious food. We used a convergent parallel mixed methods design to describe the food insecurity households accessing food clubs experience and to assess diet quality and wellbeing at the start and after at least three months of using food clubs in the South of England.
METHODS: Participants accessing food

BACKGROUND: The food choices of migrants are frequently limited by lack of access to sufficient and adequate food. Food insecurity (FI) during adolescence has potential negative health consequences, however the experiences of FI of adolescent in-transit migrants have seldom been reported.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the experiences of FI of adolescent in-transit migrants and their ways of coping with it.
METHODS: Qualitative study, with 19 semi-structured interviews with adolescents (ages 13-19 years), in shelters for migrants in Mexico in 2022-2023. We followed a reflexive thematic analysis strat

Objective: Food insecurity (FIS) is a substantial concern for many college students. Evidence suggests that FIS and adverse childhood events (ACEs) are separately linked to higher rates of eating disordered behavior. Method: The present study examines food insecurity and ACEs together as predictors of eating disordered behavior in a sample of students (n = 346) from an Appalachian university. Results: indicate that rates of food insecurity were fairly high in this sample, with approximately 70% of the sample experiencing childhood and current food insecurity. Current food insecurity and ACEs w

Food insecurity disproportionately impacts people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (PWIDD) and their families. This scoping review explores food insecurity in this population, considering prevalence estimates and disparities, consequences, risk factors, and protective factors. A systematic search identified 21 relevant sources. Food insecurity was consistently reported at higher levels among PWIDD compared to those without disabilities across sources. Consequences include worsened nutritional challenges, diagnosis-specific behavioral changes, and caregiver emotional distress. R

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity (FI) and obesity are associated with cardiovascular risk markers such as hypertension, yet it remains unclear whether their coexistence increases hypertension risk beyond their independent contributions. We hypothesized that women experiencing both FI and OWT/OB ('coexisting burden') would have higher odds of hypertension, compared to those experiencing only OWT/OB, only FI, or neither. We aimed to examine the association of FI and overweight/obesity (OWT/OB) with hypertension and systolic blood pressure (SBP) among Guatemalan women of reproductive age (15-49 year

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity affects over half of Cambodia's population, yet despite national efforts to improve equitable access to food, little is known about how migration patterns and provincial contexts shape this vulnerability. This study examines provincial variation in food insecurity in Cambodia, its association with domestic migration patterns, modification by household-head gender and the role of provincial-level contextual factors.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from 5166 adults aged 18 and older from the 2023 World Health Survey Plus Cambodia, linked with provinci
