Migration studies of 3-chloro-1,2-propanediol (3-MCPD) in polyethylene extrusion-coated paperboard food packaging.

The manufacturing process of paperboard food packaging can produce small quantities of 3-chloro-1,2-propanediol (3-MCPD or 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol) when wet-strength resins containing epichlorohydrin are used. 3-MCPD is from the same family as 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol (1,3-DCP), which is known to cause cancer in animals. 3-MCPD has been found in acid hydrolyzed vegetable protein, Asian sauces and paperboard for food contact. In this investigation, we conducted extraction studies to measure 3-MCPD migration into food simulant solvents from the food contact side of polyethylene extrusion-coa

An evaluation of analytical techniques for determination of lead, cadmium, chromium, and mercury in food-packaging materials.

Closed microwave digestion and a high-pressure asher have been evaluated for wet-oxidation and extraction of lead, cadmium, chromium, and mercury from a range of typical packaging materials used for food products. For the high-pressure asher a combination of nitric and sulfuric acids was efficient for destruction of a range of packaging materials; for polystyrene, however, nitric acid alone was more efficient. For microwave digestion, a reagent containing nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and hydrogen peroxide was used for all materials except polystyrene. Use of the high-pressure asher resulted in

Determination of non-volatile components of a biodegradable food packaging material based on polyester and polylactic acid (PLA) and its migration to food simulants.

Bioplastic materials are increasingly used due to its benefits for the environment preservation. Among them, food packaging materials based on polylactic acid (PLA) are among the most employed. In this work, a sample treatment methodology based on dissolution/precipitation has been optimized, selecting finally dichloromethane/ethanol as solvent/antisolvent system. The extracts obtained were analysed by UPLC-MS(QTOF), that allowed the identification of the main PLA non-volatile components. The recovery results were between 100.9 to 114.0%. The methodology was applied to the analysis of pellets

High oxygen barrier and synergistically enhanced photodynamic antibacterial films via Berberine/layered double hydroxide for food packaging.

Microbial contamination and oxygen ingress are primary drivers of food spoilage, but advanced materials that simultaneously offer high oxygen barrier and effective antibacterial functions remain scarce. To address this dual challenge, we engineered a polyvinyl alcohol-based composite coating, incorporating the natural aggregation-induced emission photosensitizer berberine (BBR) and non-toxic layered double hydroxide nanosheets (LDH NS), on a polyethylene terephthalate substrate. The developed composite film demonstrated a low oxygen transmission rate of 0.06 cm3 m-2 day-1 atm-1. Furthermore, i

Antimicrobial Carboxymethyl Cellulose-Bacterial Cellulose Composites Loaded with Green Synthesized ZnO and Ag Nanoparticles for Food Packaging.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) has earned a well-defined place among biopolymers due to its unique physicochemical properties. Unfortunately, native BC lacks antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. To address this limitation, many BC-based nanocomposites with antimicrobial properties have been developed, primarily for applications in the biomedical field, but also for use in food packaging. Many nanoparticles can be incorporated into BC membranes, often in combination with other bioactive molecules. Among the available methods for nanoparticle synthesis, green synthesis has emerged as promising, a

Non-targeted analysis with liquid chromatography - high resolution mass spectrometry for the identification of food packaging migrants.

Potential contamination of food with chemicals migrating from food packaging is an important, yet under-investigated area of food safety. In this study, we examined chemicals migrating from common paper-based food packaging: pizza boxes and pizza box liners, butcher paper and liquid egg containers. Migration tests were conducted with a food simulant for 10 days, and migrated chemicals were identified with liquid chromatography (LC) - high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) with mass error < 3 ppm. HRMS identification was based on spectra and/or structure matching against commercial databases

Silver-Bacterial Cellulose-Areca catechu Extract Nanocomposite Biofilm for Sustainable Food Packaging: Synthesis, Characterization, and Antibacterial Activity.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a low-cost, biodegradable biopolymer with excellent mechanical strength and water-holding capacity. It is an attractive material for sustainable food packaging; however, native BC lacks intrinsic antibacterial activity. In this study, silver-bacterial cellulose-Areca catechu nanocomposite biofilms were synthesized through in situ reduction of Ag+ on BC films, followed by impregnation with A. catechu fruit extract at concentrations of 0-30 mg/mL. The resulting films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), Fou
