Recent insight into nanotechnology in fish processing: a knowledge gap analysis.

Fish and other seafood are fundamental nutritional ingredients for a healthy life that are consumed globally. However, the high degree of spoilage of these products has led to the progress of a prevalent variety of preservation, processing, and analytical techniques in this sector. Food safety, authenticity, nutritional quality, and freshness are important features of aquaculture quality. In seafood processing, developing nanotechnology (nanotech), by adapting to new and complex applications, has promising applications for all segments of the food supply chain, including quality assessment, pa

Non-governmental organisations and the regulation of harmful commodity industries: navigating global governance to change corporate practices.

BACKGROUND: The crucial role of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in advancing effective regulation of health-harming corporate practices is widely accepted, yet how precisely they shape global health governance is not well-understood. While a vast literature has grappled with corporate power and its political, market, and technological dimensions, less attention has been paid to strategic efforts to counter the influence of corporate actors. Drawing on international relations and political economy scholarship, we seek to understand NGO strategies aimed at achieving greater regulation of t

Microbes as a tool for the bioremediation of fish waste from the environment and the production of value-added compounds: a review.

Fish are the most edible protein source worldwide and generate several remnants such as scales, viscera, head, bone, and skin. Fish wastes are not disposed of properly, which adversely affects the environment, especially the water bodies where fish processing industries dispose of their waste. Fish waste mainly contains nitrogen, oil, fat, salts, heavy metals, and organic compounds, which increase the biological oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand. Fish waste can degrade in various ways, such as physicochemical or by enzymatic action, but using microbes is an environmentally friendly appr

COVID-19 Among Workers in the Seafood Processing Industry: Implications for Prevention Measures - Alaska, March-October 2020.

Large COVID-19 outbreaks have occurred in high-density workplaces, such as food processing facilities (1). Alaska's seafood processing industry attracts approximately 18,000 out-of-state workers annually (2). Many of the state's seafood processing facilities are located in remote areas with limited health care capacity. On March 23, 2020, the governor of Alaska issued a COVID-19 health mandate (HM10) to address health concerns related to the impending influx of workers amid the COVID-19 pandemic (3). HM10 required employers bringing critical infrastructure (essential) workers into Alaska to su

The role of food processing in the inflammatory potential of diet during pregnancy.

The aim was to investigate the relationship between the energy contribution (E%) of foods according to the degree of industrial processing and the energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DII) in pregnancy. Two 24-hour dietary recalls were obtained from each of the 784 pregnant women. Adjusted linear regression models allowed observing an inverse association between E-DII scores and E% from minimally processed foods β = -0.049 (95%CI -0.055- -0.042) and a direct association with the E% of ultra-processed foods β = 0.052 (95%CI 0.045-0.058), indicating a relationship between the dietary in

Generation of airborne Listeria innocua from model floor drains.

Listeria monocytogenes can colonize floor drains in poultry processing and further processing facilities, remaining present even after cleaning and disinfection. Therefore, during wash down, workers exercise caution to avoid spraying hoses directly into drains in an effort to prevent the escape and transfer of drain microflora to food contact surfaces. The objective of this study was to examine the extent to which an inadvertent water spray into a colonized floor drain can cause the spread of airborne Listeria. Listeria innocua was used to inoculate a polyvinyl chloride model floor drain, resu

Biofilm formation ability of Listeria monocytogenes isolates from raw ready-to-eat seafood.

Listeria monocytogenes is of great concern as a foodborne pathogen. Many ready-to-eat foods are widely contaminated with this organism and have caused listeriosis outbreaks and sporadic cases in many countries. In Japan, there is a high incidence of L. monocytogenes contamination, specifically in raw ready-to-eat seafood. Identical L. monocytogenes subtypes have been isolated repeatedly from samples of food manufactured at a given store or processing plant, and researchers suspected that certain L. monocytogenes isolates have formed biofilms at these sites. A microtiter plate biofilm formation

Applications of Fungi and Fungal-Derived Ingredients in the QPS and GRAS Systems.

Filamentous fungi are representative eukaryotic microorganisms that are widely used in the food industry for the production of organic acids, enzymes, minerals, and other value-added compounds. However, ensuring their safety is a prerequisite for their application in food production. Two major regulatory approaches relevant to the safety of microbial food production are the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) framework and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Qualified Presumption of Safety (QPS) approach. The EFSA QPS framework evaluates eligible t

Occurrence of Listeria and listeriosis in Hungary.

Listeriosis is a rare human disease in Hungary. The number of cases is slowly increasing. Only sporadic events have been observed but the occurrence of epidemic listeriosis may be supposed. The Listeria monocytogenes (in abbreviation: L. m.) transmitter role of food in human infections has not yet been verified. The epidemiological character of animal listeriosis is different. Healthy carriers can be found among both humans and animals. Foodstuffs of animal as well as plant origin may be contaminated with Listeria. When the processing technology and/or hygienic conditions are not satisfactory,

Ribotype diversity of Listeria monocytogenes isolates from two salmon processing plants in Norway.

The purpose of this study was to use automated ribotyping procedure to track Listeria monocytogenes transmission in the cold smoked fish production chain and to characterize L. monocytogenes subtypes associated with the salmon processing industry. A total of 104 isolates, which had previously been obtained from a raw fish slaughter and processing plant (plant B) and an adjacent, downstream, salmon smoking operation (plant A), were characterized. These isolates had been obtained through a longitudinal study on Listeria presence, which covered a 31-week period, in both plants. Isolates had been

Multi-Source Data Fusion Integrating HPLC, GC-IMS, and Multidimensional Biomimetic Technologies for Evaluating the Effects of Different Processing Degrees on the Quality of Salt-Processed Semen Cuscutae.

Semen Cuscutae is commonly used as a medicinal and edible functional food ingredient. Salt-processing can significantly alter its sensory quality and endogenous components. Currently, salt-processed Semen Cuscutae mainly adopts hyperoside as the quality evaluation indicator, which fails to meet the requirements for the identification of processing intensity (heat level) during the development of the traditional Chinese medicine industry. This study aims to construct a comprehensive quality evaluation framework for identifying the optimal processing degree of salt-processed Semen Cuscutae. Mult

Colonisation dynamics of Listeria monocytogenes strains isolated from food production environments.

Listeria monocytogenes is a ubiquitous bacterium capable of colonising and persisting within food production environments (FPEs) for many years, even decades. This ability to colonise, survive and persist within the FPEs can result in food product cross-contamination, including vulnerable products such as ready to eat food items. Various environmental and genetic elements are purported to be involved, with the ability to form biofilms being an important factor. In this study we examined various mechanisms which can influence colonisation in FPEs. The ability of isolates (n = 52) to attach and

Functional and Bioactive Properties of Peptides Derived from Marine Side Streams.

In fish processing, a great amount of side streams, including skin, bones, heads and viscera, is wasted or downgraded as feed on a daily basis. These side streams are rich sources of bioactive nitrogenous compounds and protein, which can be converted into peptides through enzymatic hydrolysis as well as bacterial fermentation. Peptides are short or long chains of amino acids differing in structure and molecular weight. They can be considered as biologically active as they can contribute to physiological functions in organisms with applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries. In the

Innovative Non-thermal Processing Technologies for Enhancing Pet Food Safety and Quality: A Comprehensive Review of Publications, Patents, and Market Trends.

Non-thermal processing technologies have emerged as promising alternatives to traditional heat treatments in the pet food industry. To date, no prior review has systematically integrated peer-reviewed publications, patents, and commercial product launches on non-thermal technologies in the pet food sector during 2014-2024. This integrative approach fills an important gap by linking scientific evidence with innovation activity and market adoption. Unlike conventional thermal methods, which often degrade heat-sensitive nutrients and alter the sensory qualities of pet food, these innovative techn
