Epidemiology of Brucellosis in California, 1993-2017: A Continuing Foodborne Disease Risk for Older Latinos.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a severe occupational or foodborne zoonosis throughout much of the world. Although eradicated from domestic cattle in the United States, brucellosis remains a disease risk to people through acquisition and consumption of animal products from endemic countries. METHODS: Cases of human brucellosis reported through the California public health disease surveillance network were reviewed for 1993 to 2017. RESULTS: From 1993 to 2017, 492 cases of brucellosis were reported in California residents. Persons aged >65 years represented less than 20% of cases, but incidence in

Foodborne Botulism in Western Romania: Ten Years' Experience at a Tertiary Infectious Disease Hospital.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to analyze epidemiological data concerning foodborne botulism in Western Romania over the last decade. Botulism, the toxin formed by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, results in a neuroparalytic disorder capable of severe clinical progression that begins in the cranial nerves and progressively descends. Preventing progression to a severe case entails timely diagnosis since curative assets are restricted. Ingesting food containing a preformed toxin (foodborne botulism) is the most typical form. METHODS: Medical records were retrospectively analyzed

Foodborne disease outbreak in a resource-limited setting: a tale of missed opportunities and implications for response.

INTRODUCTION: Foodborne diseases (FBD) have emerged as a major public health problem worldwide. Though the global burden of FBD is currently unknown, foodborne diarrhoeal diseases kill 1.9 million children globally every year. On 25th September 2014, health authorities in Eastern Region of Ghana were alerted of a suspected FBD outbreak involving patrons of a community food joint. We investigated to determine the magnitude, source and implement control and preventive measures. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted. We reviewed medical records for data on demographics and clinical

Foodborne disease in Australia: incidence, notifications and outbreaks. Annual report of the OzFoodNet network, 2002.

In 2002, OzFoodNet continued to enhance surveillance of foodborne diseases across Australia. The OzFoodNet network expanded to cover all Australian states and territories in 2002. The National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health together with OzFoodNet concluded a national survey of gastroenteritis, which found that there were 17.2 (95% C.I. 14.5-19.9) million cases of gastroenteritis each year in Australia. The credible range of gastroenteritis that may be due to food each year is between 4.0-6.9 million cases with a mid-point of 5.4 million. During 2002, there were 23,434 notificat

WHO estimates of the global, regional, and national foodborne burdens of 14 invasive parasitic diseases, 2000-21: an updated data synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Over 10 years ago, WHO estimates of hazard-specific foodborne disease burdens showed that parasites exert considerable health burdens globally. We updated these estimates, focusing on 14 invasive parasitic diseases. METHODS: Incidences, deaths, and disability-adjusted life-year (DALY) burdens were estimated for each parasitic disease from 2000 to 2021, using data from systematic reviews and the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study. For some diseases, structured expert judgement was used to estimate proportions of foodborne infection. Data were pooled via hie

Elevated risk of adverse effects from foodborne contaminants and drugs in inflammatory bowel disease: a review.

The global burden of Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been rising over the last decades. IBD is an intestinal disorder with a complex and largely unknown etiology. The disease is characterized by a chronically inflamed gastrointestinal tract, with intermittent phases of exacerbation and remission. This compromised intestinal barrier can contribute to, enhance, or even enable the toxicity of drugs, food-borne chemicals and particulate matter. This review discusses whether the rising prevalence of IBD in our society warrants the consideration of IBD patients as a specific population group in

Emergence of salsa and guacamole as frequent vehicles of foodborne disease outbreaks in the United States, 1973-2008.

Fresh salsa and guacamole often contain diced raw produce, are often made in large batches, and are often poorly refrigerated, which may make them prone to contamination that can cause foodborne illness. The safety of salsa and guacamole is increasingly important as these foods gain popularity. Since 1973, local, state, and territorial health departments have voluntarily reported foodborne disease outbreaks to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Foodborne Disease Outbreak Surveillance System (FDOSS) using a standard reporting form. FDOSS used paper-based reporting for 1973-1997 an
