[Treatment of foot deformities in diastrophic dysplasia--a case report].

We report the follow-up of a neonate with Pes equinovarus et adductus due to diastrophic dysplasia. The feet have been treated operatively by lengthening of the calcaneal tendon after initial redressement and casting. The normalized position is maintained by means of an removable plastic cast and later an instep raiser. Instructions for the maintenance are given.

[Correction of severe deformities of the foot, using Ilizarov's equipment].

MATERIAL AND METHODS: 38 feet in 36 patients who underwent a progressive foot correction without osteotomies, with an Ilizarov frame have been reviewed. There were 23 equinovarus, 2 equinovalgus, 13 equinus deformities. In 20 patients, the deformity had relapsed after one to four previous operations. The mean follow-up was 22 (12-35) months. The mean age was 17 years (6-68). There were 15 females and 21 males. RESULTS: All but 4 patients were satisfied with the result, although 15 still had pain during daily activities. The shape of the feet was distinctly improved in all patients, although r

The correction of complex foot deformities using Ilizarov's distraction osteotomies.

Twenty-five very complex foot deformities were treated by Ilizarov distraction osteotomies. The osteotomy types included supramalleolar, U, V, posterior calcaneal, talocalcaneal neck, midfoot, and metatarsal osteotomies. In addition, the leg was lengthened and widened in most cases. The mean treatment time was 6.4 months. There were 20 minor or major complications related to the foot osteotomies in 18 feet, including deep pin-tract infection in three, failure of osteotomy separation in nine, acute postoperative tarsal tunnel syndrome in two, toe contractures in three, wire breakage or cutout i

Rotational deformities of the tibia and foot in preterm infants.

Metatarsus adductus and medial tibial torsion are common in term infants. Our study shows that metatarsus adductus is rare, whereas medial tibial torsion does not occur in preterm infants with gestational ages of less than or equal to 30 weeks. These preterm infants have lateral rotation of the legs, external tibial rotation, and everted or normal feet at birth. This posture may explain the rarity of metatarsus adductus and medial tibial torsion in preterm infants.

Flatfoot deformity affected the kinematics of the foot and ankle in proportion to the severity of deformity.

BACKGROUND: Flatfoot deformity is thought to affect gait kinematics, but the effect of flatfoot on segmental motion of the foot during gait remains unclear. Recently, multi-segmental foot models (MFMs) have been introduced for the in vivo analysis of dynamic foot kinematics. The objective of this study was to find the effect of flatfoot on segmental motion of the foot during gait in females by comparisons with age and gender controlled healthy adults. METHODS: Thirty six symptomatic flatfeet patients (52-80 years old) and 42 symptom-free female participants without flatfoot (60-69 years old)

Ankle and foot tendon transfer (excluding paralytic foot and toe deformity).

It is essential to master the techniques of tendon transfer and to know the indications, so as to be able to treat tendinopathy, tendon tear or static deformity in the foot and ankle. The type of transfer depends on the pathology, with the aim of reconstructing or supplementing the affected muscle. Complete clinical and paraclinical assessment is needed to determine feasibility and draw up the preoperative plan according to axial deformity and associated retraction. Success depends on several factors: rigorous technique, fixation method, tension adjustment, immobilization, and rehabilitation.

Surgery for foot deformities in MECP2 disorders: prevalence and risk factors.

Foot deformities in methyl-CpG binding protein 2 (MECP2) disorders are thought to be common, but reports are scant. The purpose of this study was to report the prevalence and type of foot deformities and surgical management for MECP2 disorders. In this retrospective, comparative study, all children presenting between June 2005 and July 2020, with a genetically confirmed MECP2-related disorder, were included. The primary outcome measure was the prevalence of surgery for foot deformities. Secondary outcomes included type and frequency of foot surgeries, age at surgery, ambulatory status, genetic

The Reliability of Common Radiographic Measurements Used to Describe Foot Deformities.

Radiographic measurements are frequently used to classify deformity and determine treatment options. Correlation coefficients can be used to determine inter- and intrarater reliability. Reliability is a required feature of any measurement if the measurement is to provide valid information. We calculated correlation coefficients for standard radiographic measurements used to categorize foot deformities: this was done for 52 sets of radiographs assessed by 5 raters. We aimed for generalizability, and kept rater instructions to match what was originally published for each measurement of interest

Conjoined twins presenting with foot deformities: insights to management and challenges.

Conjoined twins are a rare outcome of conception associated with numerous anomalies involving multiple organ systems. Musculoskeletal abnormalities like vertebral anomalies, sacral agenesis, foot deformities and hip dysplasia have been described in literature. We describe two cases of pyopagus twins with congenital talipes equinovarus and congenital vertical talus deformity which have not been described previously in this type of conjoined twins. The orthopaedist should look actively for such deformities in this patient population and be wary of the difficulties associated with their managemen

Subtalar Joint Arthrodesis for Elective and Posttraumatic Foot and Ankle Deformities.

Subtalar joint arthrodesis is a procedure used in posttraumatic arthritis, osteoarthritis, tarsal coalition management, posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, and inflammatory arthropathies, and can be used in deformity correction. The goals of the procedure are to eliminate pain, improve function, restore stability, and realign the hind foot. The procedure has high patient satisfaction with low complications while preserving motion in adjacent tarsal joints. Joint preparation is important and time should be spent preparing the joint for successful arthrodesis and the fixation construct needs to

Distraction osteogenesis for complex foot deformities: U-osteotomy with external fixation.

BACKGROUND: Certain complex foot deformities can be corrected surgically with a U-osteotomy. This osteotomy is indicated for patients with a uniform deformity of the entire foot relative to the tibia, preexisting stiffness and/or fusion of the subtalar joint, and a pain-free ankle joint. The goal is to create a plantigrade foot through gradual osseous repositioning of the entire foot relative to the tibia by means of external fixation. If needed, foot height can be increased simultaneously. METHODS: Fifteen complex multiplanar foot deformities in fifteen patients were treated with a U-osteoto

Ankle and foot deformities and malformations in proximal femoral focal deficiency.

PURPOSE: To describe foot abnormalities in proximal femoral focal deficiency and their correlation to the severity. METHODS: Eighty-nine extremities in 87 patients were evaluated between 1996 and 2020 clinically and radiologically. Fibula length, ankle shape, tarsal coalitions, and the number of foot rays were recorded. Extremities with proximal femoral focal deficiency were classified according to Pappas and divided into severe (classes II and V), medium severe (classes III and IV), and mild groups (classes VII, VIII, and IX). RESULTS: The fibula was short in 89% and absent in 11% of cases.
