Diabetic Foot Osteomyelitis in Patients with and without Peripheral Arterial Disease: Two Different Diseases?

The aim of the current study was to evaluate the outcomes of patients with diabetic foot osteomyelitis (DFO), comparing subjects with and without peripheral arterial disease (PAD). The study is a prospective study including a population of patients affected by a DFO located in the forefoot. All patients were managed by a surgical conservative approach defined by the removal of the infected bone, in association with the antibiotic therapy. Patients were divided into two groups: those with PAD (neuro-ischaemic DFO) and those without (neuropathic DFO). After 1 year of follow-up, the following out

Hand, foot, and mouth disease: a viral disease of importance to dentists.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a disease of viral origin that produces characteristic lesions in the mouth and on the hands and feet. Knowledge of the disease is important to dentists since the oral vesicular and ulcerative lesions are usually the first clinical signs of the disease, and the epidemiclike patterns of the disease make it likely that the dentist will contract the disease himself or possibly become a carrier of the virus. The lesions of hand, foot, and mouth disease usually regress in two to three weeks, and complications are rare. Treatment is basically palliative to reduce the

Resolution of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease With Valacyclovir.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common viral illness that predominantly affects young children, with approximately 95% of cases occurring in individuals under the age of 5. While typically self-limiting, a subset of cases may present with more severe cardiopulmonary and neurological sequelae, such as myocarditis, pneumonia, meningitis, and encephalitis. Management is primarily supportive, as no standard antiviral therapy currently exists. However, previous case reports have suggested that acyclovir may offer therapeutic benefits. We present a case of a healthy 39-year-old female who

Foot alignment characteristics in patients with Freiberg's disease.

BACKGROUND: Freiberg's disease is defined as aseptic necrosis of the metatarsal heads. It is more common in female patients and primarily affects adolescents aged 11-17 years. The second metatarsal is most frequently involved, accounting for approximately 68 % of cases. This study aimed to assess foot alignment in patients with Freiberg's disease using a mapping system to evaluate radiographic images. METHODS: The study cohort included 13 patients (14 feet) diagnosed with Freiberg's disease at our hospital between January 2010 and December 2022, with appropriate loading-position radiographs (

Efficacy of Cytoreg in the treatment of diabetic foot disease.

OBJECTIVE: Complications from diabetic foot wounds, including bacterial infection, ulceration and gangrene, are major causes of hospitalisation and are responsible for 85% of amputations in patients with diabetes. Given that orally administered investigational therapeutic Cytoreg (Cytorex de Venezuela SA, Venezuela), a defined aqueous mixture of hydrofluoric, hydrochloric, sulfuric, phosphoric, citric and oxalic acids, has been shown to increase levels of arterial blood oxygen in a Wistar rat model, oral and oral+topical Cytoreg were tested on patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) under a

Recent developments in targets for ischemic foot disease.

Diabetes is a key risk factor for ischaemic foot disease, which causes pain, tissue loss, hospital admission, and major amputation. Currently, treatment focuses on revascularisation, but many patients are unsuitable for surgery and revascularisation is frequently unsuccessful. The authors describe recent research in animal models and clinical trials investigating novel medical targets for ischaemia, including theories about impaired wound healing, animal models for limb ischaemia and recent randomised controlled trials testing novel medical therapies. Novel targets identified in animal models

Current status of hand-foot-and-mouth disease.

Hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) is a viral illness commonly seen in young children under 5 years of age, characterized by typical manifestations such as oral herpes and rashes on the hands and feet. These symptoms typically resolve spontaneously within a few days without complications. Over the past two decades, our understanding of HFMD has greatly improved and it has received significant attention. A variety of research studies, including epidemiological, animal, and in vitro studies, suggest that the disease may be associated with potentially fatal neurological complications. These findi

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a common viral disease in childhood. Because the disease has the potential to reach epidemic levels and mortality is high in some countries, early recognition of this disease is of paramount importance. OBJECTIVE: This purpose of this article is to familiarize pediatricians with the clinical manifestations and management of hand, foot, and mouth disease. METHODS: A search was conducted in February 2022 in PubMed Clinical Queries using the key term "hand, foot, and mouth disease". The search strategy included all clinical trials, observational stud

An unusual location of hand, foot and mouth disease.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a childhood febrile disease. Oral lesions and papulovesicular lesions on the hands and feet are the clinical signs of the disease. In our case, a 17-year-old boy presented to the emergency department, where he was diagnosed with HFMD. After 6 days, he felt intense pain in his right testicle, and therefore an ultrasound (US) examination was performed. US detected a hypoechoic mass-like area in the right testis. Viral etiology was suspected, and no therapy was prescribed. After a little more than 3 months, US examination showed a reduced lesion size. Viral

Orthopedic Surgical Foot Management in Hansen Disease.

Hansen disease remains a common problem worldwide with 750,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Nerve injury is a central feature of the pathogenesis because of the unique tendency of Mycobacterium leprae to invade Schwann cells and the peripheral nervous system, that can be permanent and develop into disabilities. The orthopedic surgeon has an important role in the management of neuropathy, performing surgical release of the tibial and common peroneal nerves in potentially constricting areas, thus providing a better environment for nerve function. In cases of permanent loss of nerve function wi

A review of trench foot: a disease of the past in the present.

From the French Invasion of Russia in 1812, to Glastonbury festival in 2007, trench foot has been reported, yet the exact nature of the condition remains unclear. This review explores the pathogenesis and treatment of trench foot. Trench foot is considered to be a nonfreezing cold injury often complicated by infection, in which exposure to cold temperatures just above freezing, combined with moisture, results in a peripheral vasoneuropathy. The presence of physical trauma, bacterial or fungal infections, malnutrition, venous hypertension and lymphoedema mean that some individuals are at greate

[Atypical variant of hand-foot-mouth disease].

An atypical variant of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) has sporadically been reported in recent years, with outbreaks in Europe, Asia, the USA and South America. A new lineage of Coxsackie virus A6 has been identified as the causative agent, a virus-type belonging to the group of enteroviruses. HFMD is transmitted through droplet infection or through faecal-oral transmission. The disease may begin with a prodromal stage and is often accompanied by fever and malaise. Typical skin findings include a papular and vesiculobullous exanthema that might be accompanied by confluent blisters (bullae), cr

Hand, foot, and mouth disease photolocalized to sunburn.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a common exanthem linked to infection with several non-polio enteroviruses. This case of an 11-year-old boy with an enteroviral infection limited to areas of sunburn is an atypical presentation of hand, foot, and mouth disease. Recognition of this unusual distribution will allow pediatricians and pediatric dermatologists to appropriately manage and counsel patients and parents.
