Life-threatening Carotid Complications Caused by Extraluminal Migration of Ingested Foreign Bodies; a Case Report and Narrative Review of Literature.

Carotid complications resulting from extra-luminal migration of ingested foreign bodies (FB) are rare but potentially life-threatening. Previous data on the topic predominantly comprises isolated case reports, leaving a gap in comprehensive evidence necessary to guide clinical decision-making. In this article, we offer a narrative review alongside a novel case report, aimed at providing a broad, evidence-based perspective on the topic to guide clinical practice. The search strategy employed keywords related to carotid artery complications from ingested FB across the following electronic databa

Temporary balloon occlusion of both the superior vena cava and the internal jugular vein to achieve removal of a migrated foreign body.

A 34-year-old man had a 1.1cm flying metallic fragment embedded in a wound in his neck, which migrated over a period of time to lodge finally inside his right internal jugular vein. Angioplasty balloons were placed in the internal jugular vein and the superior vena cava to keep the fragment from moving with the blood flow during surgery. The fragment was then removed with forceps and the incision closed.

Relapsing pneumonia due to a migrating intrathoracic foreign body in a World War II veteran shot 53 years ago.

In the great majority of cases of long-standing intrathoracic foreign bodies, patients are asymptomatic. However, symptoms may occur years later from the migration of the foreign body. We report on a 70-year-old patient who developed relapsing pneumonia due to obstruction of a bronchial branch of the left apical group by a migrating infantry bullet impacting 53 years ago. This was not diagnosed until the second attack of pneumonia in 1998. The bullet remains were removed bronchoscopically and the pneumonia resolved completely without further complications.

Modulation of biomaterial-induced foreign body response by regulating the differentiation and migration of Treg cells through the CXCL12-CXCR4/7 axis.

Tissue exposure to implanted biomaterials triggers a foreign body response (FBR), which is a stepwise immunological process involving innate immune cells and tissue repair cells. Although the regulatory T (Treg) cells play a crucial role in inflammation and tissue repair, their function in the process of FBR has not been well investigated. In this study, as titanium (Ti) exhibits better biocompatibility and induces milder FBR than polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), we analyzed the characteristics of Treg cells during FBR caused by the two types of biomaterials. In a rat femur implantation model,

Migrated tubal sterilisation clip presenting as a subcutaneous gluteal foreign body 24 years later: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of sterilisation clip migration is reportedly 25%. However, less than 1% of those who experience clip migration will present with pain, an abscess, or spontaneous extrusion. Here we present a rare case of sterilisation clip migration through the entire pelvic floor. CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old female was referred from community to the Surgical Emergency Unit with a possible metallic foreign body under the skin following an attempted routine gluteal cyst excision. The patient first noticed a lump under the skin 2 years ago which gradually became more apparent and

Needle in the heart: a rare case of cardiac tamponade caused by a migrated foreign body and mimicking ST segment elevation myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Pericardial tamponade is a serious condition which may eventually lead to severe haemodynamic disturbances and cardiac arrest. It is most often caused by the accumulation of fluid inside the pericardium, as a result of different aetiological factors such as pericarditis, neoplastic diseases, lymphatic dysfunctions, or idiopathic pericardial disease. Pericardial tamponade can develop after cardiac surgical procedures or as a complication of myocardial infarction. Collection of blood inside the pericardial sack can be the result of pericardial or cardiac trauma. It is exceedingly rar

Management of retrohepatic inferior vena cava injury during hepatectomy and an intravascular foreign body caused by surgical gauze migration: a case report.

We report a case involving a hepatocellular carcinoma with massive bleeding from a large (retrohepatic inferior vena cava) RHIVC laceration during laparoscopic posterior sectionectomy, complicated by the exceedingly rare migration of surgical gauze into the left pulmonary artery (LPA). Hemostasis was achieved by manual compression and two anchoring Prolene sutures at both ends of the laceration, allowing effective RHIVC wall approximation. Given the low central venous pressure during hepatectomy, edge approximation significantly reduced bleeding and improved repair visibility. Postoperative im

[Foreign Body Granuloma on Posterior Neck due to Wear and Migration of Interlaminar Spacer after Cervical Spinal Stenosis Surgery: A Case Report].

The use of interlaminar spacers in double-door laminoplasty for treating cervical spinal stenosis is a relatively new technique; however, reports of complications associated with this procedure are rare. Here, we present the case of a 42-year-old male who presented with a posterior neck mass 2 years after undergoing double-door laminoplasty with interlaminar spacers. Imaging studies, including ultrasonography, plain radiography, and MRI, revealed the wear, fragmentation, and migration of multiple interlaminar spacers, thereby forming a foreign body granuloma. This case highlights a rare compli

Spontaneous expulsion of an intrabronchial sharp metallic foreign body and migration to the gastrointestinal tract at Muhimbili National Hospital: Case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Aspirated foreign bodies continue to pose challenges to Otorhinolaryngologists and are potentially life threatening thus an otorhinolaryngological emergency. The main stay of treatment of foreign bodies (FBs) in the tracheobronchial tree remains to be bronchoscopy while bearing in mind earlier and safer removal of such foreign bodies. Spontaneous expulsion of an Intrabronchial foreign body is a rare entity with few cases reported in the available literatures. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We are reporting a rare case of a 3-year old male child who presented to otorhinolaryngology depart

Recurrent Migration of Fish Bone Foreign Bodies into the Intrahepatic Bile Duct After Pancreaticoduodenectomy Identified by DNA Metabarcoding: A Case Report with Pathophysiological Considerations.

Fish bone migration into the bile duct after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) is rare, and the mechanism of recurrent migration is unclear. We report a case in which multiple fish bones were repeatedly identified and removed from the intrahepatic bile duct during four endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography procedures over more than six years after PD. The foreign bodies were definitively identified as fish bones using a component analysis and DNA metabarcoding. These findings suggest that recurrent migration may occur even in the absence of apparent anatomical abnormalities and it may be a

Ultrasound Diagnosis of a Retained Migrated Foreign Body Following Penetrating Injury to The Upper Thigh in a Child: A Case Report Demonstrating an Underused Indication for Diagnostic Ultrasound.

We present a case of delayed diagnosis of retained glass foreign body in the inguinal region of a child using ultrasonography following penetrating trauma to the upper thigh. The foreign body had traversed significantly by the time of diagnosis, from the medial upper thigh to the inguinal region at the level of the inguinal ligament. Ultrasound can be an effective initial imaging modality for the diagnosis of foreign bodies in children, allowing the potential to reduce ionizing radiation exposure.

Endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound for embedded or migratory digestive foreign body.

Embedded or migratory ingested foreign bodies (FBs) may be a disaster when not found intraluminally and can be seriously life-threatening. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) has advantages of transmural, close range and real-time imaging. Under its guidance, minimally invasive endoscopic removal of FBs and abscess drainage become available and safe to avoid unnecessary surgery. However, relatively few diagnostic applications of EUS have been reported. Endoscopic removal and abscess drainage with or without EUS-guidance were even scarce. We found 21 cases of migratory FBs reported in which EUS was use

[Stones and foreign bodies of the urethra].

Foreign bodies in the bladder and urethra have been already largely described either by their nature itself as well as by the circumstances of their introduction. If their presence often reveals dubious psychiatric behaviours, one must also evoke possible accidental introductions during transvesical surgery or migration from spaces adjacent to the bladder. The treatment of those foreign bodies can be sorted out through endoscopy or surgical approach.
