Surface Topography of PLA Implants Defines the Outcome of Foreign Body Reaction: An In Vivo Study.

The formation of a dense fibrous capsule around the foreign body and its contracture is the most common complication of biomaterial implantation. The aim of our research is to find out how the surface of the implant influences the inflammatory and fibrotic reactions in the surrounding tissues. We made three types of implants with a remote surface topography formed of polylactide granules with different diameters: large (100-200 µm), medium (56-100 µm) and small (1-56 µm). We placed these implants in skin pockets in the ears of six chinchilla rabbits. We explanted the implants on the 7th, 14th,

Foreign-Body Reaction Resulting in Thyroiditis-A Complication of Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsy of the Thyroid.

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is a cost-effective and safe office procedure performed to evaluate thyroid nodules. We report a case of a 33-year-old woman who presented with pain and swelling of the thyroid after undergoing an FNAB for a right thyroid nodule at an outside hospital. The patient received a course of antibiotics without complete resolution of her symptoms and ultimately, underwent a right thyroid lobectomy. Pathology of the excised thyroid tissue showed chronic lymphohistiocytic inflammation with giant cell reaction and hemorrhage consistent with a foreign-body reaction. T

Dexamethasone Reduces the Foreign Body Reaction to Intraneural Electrode Implants in the Peripheral Nerve of the Rat.

Intraneural electrodes must be in intimate contact with nerve fibers to have a proper function, but this interface is compromised due to the foreign body reaction (FBR). The FBR is characterized by a first inflammatory phase followed by a second anti-inflammatory and fibrotic phase, which results in the formation of a tissue capsule around the implant, causing physical separation between the active sites of the electrode and the nerve fibers. We have tested systemically several anti-inflammatory drugs such as dexamethasone (subcutaneous), ibuprofen and maraviroc (oral) to reduce macrophage act

Magnetic resonance imaging appearance of foreign-body granulomatous reactions to dermal cosmetic fillers.

Foreign body granulomas can develop after the injection of various cosmetic filling materials into the facial area to flatten wrinkles. Clinically, reactive lesions are easily mistaken for soft-tissue neoplasms or cysts. This report presents a case of foreign body granuloma in a 52-year-old female patient complaining of a painless swelling in the nasolabial region. Both clinical and histological features are described, underscoring the diagnostic role of magnetic resonance imaging findings.

Cell-scale porosity minimizes foreign body reaction and promotes innervated myofiber formation after volumetric muscle loss.

Volumetric muscle loss (VML) from severe traumatic injuries results in irreversible loss of contractile tissue and permanent functional deficits. These injuries resist endogenous healing and clinical treatment due to excessive inflammation, leading to fibrosis, muscle fiber denervation, and impaired regeneration. Using a rodent tibialis anterior VML model, this study demonstrates microporous annealed particle (MAP) hydrogel scaffolds as a biomaterial platform for improved muscle regeneration. Unlike bulk (nanoporous) hydrogel scaffolds, MAP scaffolds enhance integration by preventing a foreign

Modified foreign body reaction to silicone imbedded in subcutaneous tissues by different mouse systemic immune conditions.

Foreign body reaction (FBR) causes unexpected adverse effects due to implanted materials in humans and animals. Inflammation and subsequent fibrosis during FBR seems to be affected by recipient immunity, such as the balance of T helper (Th) response that has the potential to regulate FBR-related macrophage function. Here, the immunological effects of FBR on subcutaneously imbedded silicone tubes (ST) at 8 weeks were investigated histologically by comparing Th1-biased C57BL/6N, Th2-biased MRL/MpJ, and autoimmune disease-prone MRL/MpJ-Faslpr/lpr . Tissue surrounding ST (TSS) was analyzed at day

Surgical Management of Penile Lesions Secondary to Foreign Body Reaction: A Case Report and Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: To improve the penile contour, some men choose to undergo implantation or injection of nonbiological materials. Foreign body reactions in penile tissue may produce scarring, deformity, ulceration, necrosis, and even gangrene. Consensus is lacking regarding the most effective surgical procedure for reconstruction of these penile lesions. OBJECTIVES: The authors describe one case study and the first systematic review focusing on reconstructive surgical management for penile lesions secondary to foreign body reaction. METHODS: PubMed, Medline, and Cochrane databases were queried for

Polycaprolactone nanofibrous mesh reduces foreign body reaction and induces adipose flap expansion in tissue engineering chamber.

Tissue engineering chamber technique can be used to generate engineered adipose tissue, showing the potential for the reconstruction of soft tissue defects. However, the consequent foreign body reaction induced by the exogenous chamber implantation causes thick capsule formation on the surface of the adipose flap following capsule contracture, which may limit the internal tissue expansion. The nanotopographical property and architecture of nanofibrous scaffold may serve as a promising method for minimizing the foreign body reaction. Accordingly, electrospinning porous polycaprolactone (PCL) na

A Nodular Foreign Body Reaction in a Dialysis Patient Receiving Long-term Treatment With Lanthanum Carbonate.

A 63-year-old man with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection and end-stage renal disease, treated with lanthanum carbonate phosphate binder for 4 years, presented with anemia and an upper gastrointestinal bleed. Upper endoscopy revealed a nodular hyperplastic epithelium, with an endoscopic ultrasound confirming hyperechoic material within the nodules. Light microscopy showed collections of histiocytes and multinucleated giant cells containing brown granular cytoplasmic material and extracellular crystalline material, a finding confirmed by electron microscopy. Similar pathologic finding

Foreign body granulomatous reaction associated with polyethelene 'Fiberwire(®)' suture material used in Achilles tendon repair.

Repair of acute Achilles tendon rupture is a common procedure. There are many accepted surgical techniques; suture selection is largely due to surgeon preference. We present a case report of a granulomatous reaction to suture material following Achilles tendon repair. 'Fiberwire(®)' is an increasingly popular suture material for the repair of tendons and ligamentous structures; the polyethelene braided structure with silicone and polyester coating provides high tensile strengths and good handling characteristics. Eight months following uneventful Achilles tendon repair surgery in an otherwise

Bioprinted M2 macrophage-derived extracellular vesicle mimics attenuate foreign body reaction and enhance vascularized tissue regeneration.

Foreign body reaction (FBR) and insufficient vascularization greatly hinder the integration of 3D-bioprinted tissue substitutes with host tissues. Previous studies have shown that these problems are exacerbated by the stiffness of the 3D-bioprinted constructions, which is highly associated with the abnormal polarization of macrophages. Therefore, we developed an engineering strategy using membrane extrusion to prepare macrophage-derived extracellular vesicle mimics (EVMs). The EVMs derived from M1 and M2 macrophages (M1-EVMs and M2-EVMs) were rich in functional proteins. In the 2D environment,

MSC-derived immunomodulatory extracellular matrix functionalized electrospun fibers for mitigating foreign-body reaction and tendon adhesion.

Adhesion formation during tendon healing remains a severe problem in clinical practice. Multiple factors contribute to postoperative adhesion formation, and macrophage-driven inflammation is thought to be greatly involved in this process. We hypothesize that reducing macrophage-mediated inflammation in the injured tendon by regulating M1 to M2 macrophage polarization may effectively inhibit adhesion formation. Here, we developed an acellular immunomodulatory biomaterial consisting of an electrospun polycaprolactone/silk fibroin (PCL/SF) composite fibrous scaffold functionalized with mesenchyma

Inflammatory foreign body reaction caused by resorbable materials used for orbital fractures repair: A case report.

RATIONALE: Resorbable materials have been recommended for orbital fractures repair. Many literatures reported the advantages of resorbable materials in clinical applications, but few reports about complications. PATIENT CONCERNS: In this study, we encountered a 14-year-old boy treated for the orbital fracture by using resorbable plate, in whom inflammatory foreign body reaction was detected. In addition, this patient had repeated history of skin allergy and upper respiratory tract infection. DIAGNOSES: Intraoperative observation showed that the resorbable material near the orbital rim was co

Comparison of microdialysis sampling perfusion fluid components on the foreign body reaction in rat subcutaneous tissue.

Microdialysis sampling is a commonly used technique for collecting solutes from the extracellular space of tissues in laboratory animals and humans. Large molecular weight solutes can be collected using high molecular weight cutoff (MWCO) membranes (100kDa or greater). High MWCO membranes require addition of high molecular weight dextrans or albumin to the perfusion fluid to prevent fluid loss via ultrafiltration. While these perfusion fluid additives are commonly used during microdialysis sampling, the tissue response to the loss of these compounds across the membrane is poorly understood. Ti
