Donor DNA is detected in recipient blood for years after kidney transplantation using sensitive forensic medicine methods.

BACKGROUND: Transplanted vascularized organs shed passenger cells, normal constituents of whole organs, that migrate to recipient lymphoid tissues and produce microchimerism. These cells lyzed by recipient cytotoxic cells release cellular organelles into the recipient circulation. In addition, warm and cold ischemia as well as immune rejection of the transplanted organ or tissue bring about destructive changes in the graft parenchymatous cells. The knowledge of the fate of donor DNA distributed in passenger cells and in fragments of disrupted nuclei as well as the role of recipient cells inter

Post-traumatic visual sequelae from a forensic medicine perspective: A retrospective analysis of 10 years of data.

BACKGROUND: Vision is one of the most fundamental functions required for a quality life. In this context, eye trauma is frequently subject to medico-legal evaluation to determine both the severity of the injury and the presence of any sequelae, and, if present, the extent of visual function loss. This study examines the medico-legal assessment process following ocular trauma. The aim is to reduce potential confusion by providing explanations that offer standardization and guidance in forensic assessments. METHODS: Between January 1, 2014 and January 1, 2024, the files and reports of 210 cases

Realistic three-dimensional imaging of injuries in forensic medicine - Survey-based method comparison of CRT and VRT.

OBJECTIVE: A comparison between Cinematic Rendering Technique (CRT) and Volume Rendering Technique (VRT) in cases with postmortem CT-angiography (PMCTA) was carried out. METHODS: For different injuries seen in PMCTA, a VRT and a CRT image of exactly the same pathological section was generated. Two questionnaires were created, one with CRT and one with VRT reconstructions, with the same questions per 3D-image. The questionnaires were sent to forensic pathologists, lawyers and police officers. In total eleven different injuries had to be analyzed. RESULTS: In total 109 questionnaires were answ

Synergistic Effects of Forensic Medicine and Traumatology: Comparison of Clinical Diagnosis Autopsy Findings in Trauma-Related Deaths.

BACKGROUND: Trauma is the third leading cause of death worldwide after cardiovascular and oncologic diseases. Predominant causes of trauma-related death (TD) are severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI), hemorrhagic shock, and multiple organ failure. An analysis of TD is required in order to review the quality of trauma care and grasp how well the entire trauma network functions, especially for the most severely injured patients. Furthermore, autopsies not only reveal hidden injuries, but also verify clinical assumed causes of death. MATERIAL: During the study period of 3 years, a total of 517 tr

The impact of witnessing other people's trauma: The resilience and coping strategies of members of the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine.

INTRODUCTION: The coping strategies, resilience and psychological distress of members of the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine (FFLM) were measured in an attempt to establish how they are affected by, and accommodate potentially traumatic encounters with patients. Belief in a just world was also measured as it was deemed to be a mediating factor in the psychological distress exhibited in the medical practitioners who participated in this study. METHODS: 120 members of the FFLM (65 females, 54 males and 1 undisclosed) volunteered to complete an online survey. Data was collected using Surv

[2 fatalities due to hyperthermia in infancy. A contribution to forensic medicine case reports of death caused by heat].

Two infants aged 4 1/2 and 8 months are reported to have been exposed to overheating by an electric blanket and a heating fan in bed for a period of up to approx. 19 hours. Dehydration complicated the effects of overheating. Due to the case history in combination with the autopsy and histological findings as well as the absence of toxicological findings the following diagnosis could be established: "Death from exhaustion as a consequence of long-lasting heat effect and dehydration." The necessity of thorough investigations in causes of death during infancy is shown by means of the two cases ab

Judicial outcomes in non-accidental head injury cases evaluated by the forensic medicine department of Angers University Hospital.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of non-accidental head injury (NAHI) is based on specific traumatic injuries listed in national recommendations published by the Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS, French national authority for health). Forensic experts play a central role in these cases. However, they often have limited knowledge of judicial outcomes, providing the rationale for this study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective single-center study covers 11 years of NAHI cases diagnosed and evaluated by the forensic medicine department of Angers University Hospital. Medical data were obtained from

Unveiling the cause of sudden cardiac death: a macroscopic and microscopic analysis at the Institute of Forensic Medicine, Cluj-Napoca (Romania).

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) remains a critical public health problem, prompting efforts to understand its underlying causes and identify patients at risk. Despite declining cardiovascular mortality in developed nations, SCD still claims millions of lives annually, disproportionately affecting men and older individuals with a higher prevalence of ischemic heart disease. This study aimed to investigate the potential association between macroscopic and microscopic diagnoses in SCD cases based on a cohort of 3438 medico-legal autopsy reports collected at the Institute of Forensic Medicine, Cluj-Nap

A forensic analysis on 53 cases of complex suicides and one complicated assessed at the Bureau of Legal Medicine of Milan (Italy).

Complex suicides are highly uncommon suicides in which multiple detrimental methods are used simultaneously or in chronological succession. We retrospectively analyzed through our database the 25512 autopsy reports registered at the Bureau of Legal Medicine of Milan in the last 27 years from 1993 until 2019, where 4498 suicides were documented. We assessed 53 cases of complex suicides and only one case of complicated suicide: for all of them we analyzed both data collected during the on-site investigation and the autopsy. In our case series, we identified a total number of 113 methods chosen a
