Alzheimer's disease and mixed pathologies as a hidden contributor to fatal hypothermia: A large-scale forensic autopsy-based study.

There is a paucity of autopsy-based studies providing detailed neuropathological characteristics of fatal hypothermia cases, particularly in trauma-associated cases. Hence, this study investigated 2054 serial autopsy cases in which histopathological examination of all organs, including the brain, could be performed. We identified 168 cases (75 female and 93 male patients) of fatal hypothermia and examined the clinical and neuropathological characteristics in these cases. Patients aged ≥65 years constituted 80% of the cohort (135 cases). Cognitive impairment (CI) was identified in 39% of cases

Black oesophagus: a rare disorder with potentially fatal outcome. A forensic pathological approach based on five autopsy cases.

Black oesophagus is a rare pathological condition of unknown aetiology characterised by a full length, circumferential black discolouration of the entire oesophageal mucosa. The disease is sporadically encountered during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. We used conventional histology, enzyme histochemistry and immunohistology to examine five autopsy cases (four males, one female; age range 43-86 years) of black oesophagus. On microscopical examination, the esophageal mucosa was entirely necrotic with demarcation by a leukocytic infiltrate in the upper submucosa. This infiltrate was dominated

Molecular pathology of brain edema after severe burns in forensic autopsy cases with special regard to the importance of reference gene selection.

Brain edema is believed to be linked to high mortality incidence after severe burns. The present study investigated the molecular pathology of brain damage and responses involving brain edema in forensic autopsy cases of fire fatality (n = 55) compared with sudden cardiac death (n = 11), mechanical asphyxia (n = 13), and non-brain injury cases (n = 22). Postmortem mRNA and immunohistochemical expressions of aquaporins (AQPs), claudin5 (CLDN5), and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) were examined. Prolonged deaths due to severe burns showed an increase in brain water content, but relative mRNA qu

Dermatology (Beau's Lines) and Forensic Pathology (Harris Lines and Linear Enamel Hypoplasia) Signs of Growth Arrest: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Dermatology encompasses the evaluation and management of localized conditions that affect the nail plate, including trauma, primary dermatoses involving the nail bed and nail matrix, and systemic disorders with manifestations that impact the nail unit. In addition to traumatic events that can alter the nail unit, localized conditions such as periungual dermatitis and infections, as well as generalized diseases, can affect the nail matrix, resulting in temporary growth arrest of the nail plate. This can present as a groove (Beau's line) in the nail plate that progressively grows out as the nail

Diagnostic Methods in Forensic Pathology: Autoptic Findings and Immunohistochemical Study in Cases of Sudden Death Due to a Colloid Cyst of the Third Ventricle.

The colloid cyst is a non-malignant tumor growth made of a gelatinous material covered by a membrane of epithelial tissue. It is usually located posterior to the foramen of Monro, in the anterior aspect of the third ventricle of the brain. Due to its location, it can cause obstructive hydrocephalus, increased intracranial pressure, and sudden cardiac death, catecholamine-mediated, through hypothalamus compression. All the mechanisms are still controversial, but the role of catecholamine has been confirmed with histological findings that highlighted myocardial injury (coagulative myocytolysis a

Tau and Amyloid-β Pathology in Japanese Forensic Autopsy Series Under 40 Years of Age: Prevalence and Association with APOE Genotype and Suicide Risk.

BACKGROUND: Aggregation of abnormal phosphorylated tau in brain stem areas may be a possible early pathological manifestation of Alzheimer's disease (AD). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the prevalence of cases with AD-related pathology in subjects <40 years of age and to explore the association of such pathology, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and APOE genotype. METHOD: We conducted brain immunohistochemistry for 189 cases <40 years of age (mean±standard deviation age 25.3±13.1 years). Tau positive cases were then assessed for the distribution of tau pathology in the locus ceruleus (LC),

Autopsy practice in forensic pathology - evidence-based or experience-based? a review of autopsies performed on victims of traumatic asphyxia in a mass disaster.

Current autopsy practice in forensic pathology is to a large extent based on experience and individual customary practices as opposed to evidence and consensus based practices. As a result there is the potential for substantial variation in how knowledge is applied in each case. In the present case series, we describe the variation observed in autopsy reports by five different pathologists of eight victims who died simultaneously from traumatic asphyxia due to compression during a human stampede. We observed that there was no mention of the availability of medical charts in five of the reports

Forensic pathological evaluation of injury severity and fatal outcome in traffic accidents: five illustrative autopsy cases of clinically unexpected death.

In forensic casework, investigation of injury severity in traffic accidents is important for evaluating the mortality, occasionally in terms of the adequacy of clinical management. The present study evaluated 5 cases of clinically unexpected delayed collapse followed by death using the abbreviated injury scale (AIS), injury severity score (ISS), and a clinical trauma care method (trauma and injury severity score, TRISS). In these cases, major injury (AIS = 3-5) was found in the head, chest and/or abdomen at autopsy, and ISS was estimated to be 11-45 (serious to critical but not incompatible wi

Neuropathology and Ophthalmological Pathology of Fatal Central Nervous System Injuries in Young Children: Forensic Neuropathology of Deaths of Children Under Age 2, 2008-2016, in Central Missouri.

Nonaccidental head injuries are significant causes of morbidity and mortality among young children. Despite broad agreement among medical experts, controversies remain over diagnostic criteria, including from autopsies, because of opinions expressed by a small group of expert witnesses who testify for defendants in suspected child homicide cases. We reviewed 249 autopsies in children 2 years old and younger from the files of our Medical Examiner office in the University of Missouri School of Medicine done between January 1, 2008 and December, 31, 2016. Because of gradually instituted mandatory

Application of postmortem imaging modalities in cases of sudden death due to cardiovascular diseases-current achievements and limitations from a pathology perspective : Endorsed by the Association for European Cardiovascular Pathology and by the International Society of Forensic Radiology and Imaging.

Postmortem imaging (PMI) is increasingly used in postmortem practice and is considered a potential alternative to a conventional autopsy, particularly in case of sudden cardiac deaths (SCD). In 2017, the Association for European Cardiovascular Pathology (AECVP) published guidelines on how to perform an autopsy in such cases, which is still considered the gold standard, but the diagnostic value of PMI herein was not analyzed in detail. At present, significant progress has been made in the PMI diagnosis of acute ischemic heart disease, the most important cause of SCD, while the introduction of p

Bones Like Glass: A historical forensic-pathological reassessment of a fatal infant case of osteogenesis imperfecta (Vrolik disease) from the Morgagni Museum of Padua (Italy).

Severe bone fragility in infancy poses a major diagnostic challenge in forensic pathology, particularly in distinguishing congenital disorders from metabolic disease or non-accidental injury. This study presents a retrospective forensic-pathological reassessment of an infant individual who died in 1920 and was historically diagnosed with idiopathic osteopsathyrosis (Vrolik disease), now recognized as osteogenesis imperfecta. The reassessment is based on archival clinical records, the original autopsy report, contemporaneous radiographic documentation, and non-destructive examination of the pre

iForensic, multicentric validation of digital whole slide images (WSI) in forensic histopathology setting according to the College of American Pathologists guidelines.

Pathology has benefited from the rapid progress of image-digitizing technology during the last decade. However, the application of digital whole slide images (WSI) in forensic pathology still needs to be improved. WSI validation is crucial to ensure diagnostic performance, at least equivalent to glass slides and light microscopy. The College of American Pathologists Pathology and Laboratory Quality Center recently updated internal digital pathology system validation recommendations. Following these guidelines, this pilot study aimed to validate the performance of a digital approach for forensi

Training Forensic Pathologists by Building on Residency Autopsy Education: A Survey Showing Where to Improve.

Obstacles to developing and sustaining a sufficient workforce of well-trained forensic pathologists present themselves during training and practice. This study focuses on the experience of the 2024-2025 forensic pathology fellowship cohort, surveyed twice to gather perspectives on their training in autopsy and forensic pathology. The first survey, conducted at the start of fellowship, focused on residency autopsy education and preparation for fellowship. This survey (n=25) found that having engaged teachers (28%), case variety (20%), and autonomy during rotations (20%) during residency were po
